My computer is possessed..

Well kind of..

Every time I shut down (Windows XP), some program does not close: .NET Broadcast Window Event 105" (close enough); I have no idea what the devil this is: it does not show up in start up programs or services in msconfig, does not show up on hijack this, nor does it show up on the taskmanager (much less any virus or spyware scanner I use). Does anybody have the slightest clue what is going on.

I can tell you right now that it is possessed! Don't worry though, I'm a professional!

Okay, first of all you're going to need to unplug the offending PC and every other peice of electronic equipment in at least a 10 foot radius from the computer.

Next, you must draw out a pentagram on your floor. Place candles on each of the points and place the PC in the middle. Now, while sprinkling holy water onto the PC, chant The Complete Idiot's Guide to PC Repair in its entirety. If the problems persist for more than 3 hours after the ritual, it means that the demon is too powerful to be exorcised by conventional means. At this point, you should grab daddy's .44 and blast the offending PC into oblivion.

If signs of the unholy show up in other appliances after the exorcism, it means the possession has spread into your house's wiring. At this point, dial 101-666, and a Swiss Guard team will be deployed from the Vatican.

Well besides the title, I was looking for actual help.

windows event 105 is an error message (I forget what error) and .NET broadcast is a command to send something to all computers in a network. On shutdown your computer is trying to send something to all computers in your network and not finding them all. I'd recomend trying a reconfiguration of your network, the XP wizard should be fairly easy to use and has about a 60% chance of fixing it. Could be a virus, but more likely that XP just lost track of your network (which is only one computer, right?) and is trying to tell the rest of your network that you logged out. XP runs into these problems occasionally but less often than NT does.

So no one has a particular fix answer?

Cannot give one with info given. It involves XP network and event 105 is "array out of range" (looked it up) which could mean anything. It could be many different things, DMM, a phantom computer on your network, a PNP device with corrupted settings or a virus or something else.

If you want to find out exactly what program is causing it; open control panel, performance and maintenance, administrative functions and click on "event viewer" icon, and then look for category 105 error on the applications event log. That should make it a lot easier to come up with a fix.

Section XIII? Hell no! Those psychos wouldn't just exorcise your house, they'd burn it down, then burn YOU!

I don't think I have a "performance and maintenance"..

EDIT: Never mind that, I had switched my control panel to classic view.

The only further information I can give is it srated happening very recently - sometime after running a line from my computer to the router as opposed to the wireless network I was on.

Edit again: Apparently it has something to do with my ATI card, it says "ATI Smart" on all 105 events.

Okay, AlphaGeek says: (AlphaGeek's job title: Senior Technology Consultant for Security Architecture.)

Look at the event logs - right click My Computer and go to Manage and on the list there is an event viewer. In the viewer there is three logs, Application, Security and System. Check the logs for that specific event. The details of the logs may give you enough information on where to start looking.

Hope this helps. :)

Now that we have caught up to 20 minutes ago, I have already stated I checked pplication events and event 105 is always caused by ATI Smart, some sort of ATI updater program.

Sorry about that! I need to read follow up posts more carefully. Computer issues can be so frustrating. I don't think I'd own one if I didn't know someone who at least knows the basics of navigating Windows.

ummm, have you tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling?

I think I can just prevent it from running since all it is is a dynamic updater.

Ahhh, that will probably do it. I never do the updating on my computer, 'cause the hubby always does it - I assume you can download updates from their website on your own?

My husband and a friend of his at work have to deal with all sorts of niche software that the firm he's at uses for financial stuff. They have a name for programs that cause issues like this - crapplications.

It only starts happening recently, I assume the link for the connection was changed or went offline or it updated something weird.

Is an autodetect hardware profile updater and bus allocation tool. If running multiple times, it does not have your new configuration (usually only runs when new PNP devices are installed). Don't have an ATI graphics card currently, but you should be able to access it from the graphics card control pannel if it has one (and you can find it) to run it manually. Disabling it is not supposed to be a problem BUT since it handles bus allocations if it has done so wrong, you may have problems with other programs (particularily graphics - played any 3D games recently?). With PNP autodetect tools (ATI Smart for example), sometimes they don't detect everything they're suposed to, usually (make that often) reconfiguring the network/computer gives them another chance to detect the hardware and change their setup. I recomend this over disabling ATI Smart because of the potential for other problems which you may not have yet noticed. IF you do disable ATI Smart, reenable it before making any other hardware changes.
