The Mall

Here's a new topic that popped into my trouble-making head...

The Mall...

Is it a great one stop shopping place?

OR

An evil corporate structure meant to sublimate youth and turn them into easily cow-able clones?

Thoughts?

After some real shopping in a mall for the first time a few days ago, I have come to believe that malls are designed by corporations for you to get lost, so you go round and round looking at merchandise.

Well, I don't mind going round and round looking at the merchandise - if I had the money to buy!!

Down with malls, down with places for youth of today to spend their parents well earned money, down with Hot Topic, down with PacSun, down . . .

Sorry, sometimes I get carried away.

I must admit...I think Hot Topic is just abercrombie and fitch for Good Charlotte fans.

And I hate Good Charlotte.

I like to call A&F abercloning and filth. Maybe I'll start a t-shirt line that says that.

Funny you should mention that.....I'm pretty sure Abercrombie owns Hot Topic. At least, I know their parent company is one of the big preppy structures. Freakin uninformed goths weirdos.....

But, but.....I work at a mall! Granted, not in Express or Hollister or Victoria's Secret (actually, I'd love to work in that one, DISCOUNT LINGERIE SETS! ;) ). If we took the malls out of the picture, there'd be a ton more unemployment, and I'd miss my job. I'm a professional Image Consultant.

Anyways, yes I do like malls.. my favorite stores are Gap, A&F, Hollister, American Eagle and Anchor Blue.. I'm not afraid of saying those are my favorite stores, and I know it will warrant criticism from the typical leftist elements in this forum.

It's not about standing out from the crowd, it's about not running around with the same 10 A&F shirt and pants outfits. In todays world, plain is different and I'm as different as they come. I wear flannels, I have cut-off jeans (the homemade type), I wear knee high socks that have nothing but the Hanes label on them. I am plain, but different.

Fashion is what punk and goth originally rebelled against. So, being the punk at heart that I am, I have chosen to rebel against the 'punk' and 'rock' look. And nothing beats my shirt that is white with black lettering that says, "SHIRT" right on the chest. A Hemingsoft original there. Made that for myself a few years back before shirts with slogans became popular. But none beat the shirt shirt.

Who's economy? Most those clothes aren't manufactured in the US. Support the economy by going to a mom and pop shop that sells consignment stuff, or original stuff from small US manufacturers.

Thanks...I would've said about the same. Except for the what you wear part, I don't do the whole knee socks thing. I wear t-shirts, usually from a local music store, jeans from a co-op, and other things for work that I picked up at a local consignment shop...all in good condition, "nearly new". there is other stuff I get as gifts, but I don't wear it as often.

As much as I liked going to a mall whenever I visited the U.S. - I don't really enjoy it all that much. Going shopping in the inner city which has the same stores and such is a lot better. Like an open-air mall. A city...

Most the places I shop don't sell a simple printed cotton t-shirt for US$25.00. It's more like $5-$10. How are you saving money? And you are right...A&F and Hollister employees...other than those in the stores and corporate offices, most of them are overseas working for pennies a day. Great thing to supposrt with your hard earned college dollars.

I know plenty of people in college (I'm faculty on a SUNY Campus) that want to have nothing to due with those mall stores. It isn't an economical benefit to shop at A&F and Hollister. It is merely a way of saying, "I'm okay...I look just like you...let's all be the same."

Talk about a great deal of illogic. I'm not going to buy some generic cotton shirt from some mom and pop store. I'd much rather have something that is a little bit more high key. Good one on the little attacks. I'm not changing my ways for the satisfaction of others.

Why wouldn't you buy a generic cotton shirt? Or a printed shirt from a silk screen store run by the guy down the street?

It's made of the same fabric and materials as your A&F shirt at a quarter of the price.

What is high key? Clothes for status instead of their purpose (to defend against the elements)? If it is "high-key" to wear something with a logo on it for no other reason than because it has a logo on it, and that everyone else has a shirt with that logo on it, how are you not "one of those people"?

I'm one who wants to wear something of status that shows I worked for it. You really need to walk out in Los Angeles some time. Most people here wear these generic shirts from some no name stores. So wouldn't that contradict what you want? Seriously, don't question my fashion tastes. I've been in that business before.

We haven't even gotten to taste. That's a different issue. What Los Angeles has to do with this I am at a loss to figure out.

Do you feel insignificant in some other way that only your clothes can give you staus? Is there a lack of original personality or something that makes you think that wearing high-status clothes (which A&F, Hollister, & the GAP are not)?

Sounds like a matter of insecurity if you feel status comes from clothing.

I think most people in general are 'easily cow-able clones', not just the young and not because of malls.
I prefer places like charity shops to malls, but I don't object to them completely. I own a wide variety of clothes (which tends to be the main mall product) and some are designer and 'mall'-bought (if the Birmingham Bullring is one) but I have not bought them for their label, I bought them because I felt the looked good on me and the style of them was unusual and 'different'. If I could find clothes as unique and sometimes even as beautiful for cheaper by any not-so-corporate means then I would undoubtedly choose that option.
Bt there isn't such an option. So I am mall-ward bound.

I think a mall is both, more the evil corporate structure, but I shop at malls. I'm guilty of funding Hot Topic but thats because the clothing is what I'm comfortable in. Im not proud of it, but I'm not going to be ashamed about finding something that makes me comfortable. Reasons why malls don't support capitalism:

1) There are only 3 companies that own every major mall in America. Other companies that try get bought out by these three or are restricted by a pact made by these three with various local zoning authorites.

2) Those three companies own what goes in the mall. For example, is A&F competing with Aeropostale? Can't be, same company...what about Old Navy and the Gap....Nope, same company.

Hardly a contradiction and deifinitely not a lie. If everything is owned by one of three entities, and these entities have a pact regarding regions, layout, and structure, who is competing?
