You have to keep the nail trimmed-cut the nail straight across-that notching is just BS.
Soaking the foot in epsom salts will help.

I had mine removed after a year of this and cutting them out myself. The doctor split the nail down the middle and removed the affected side, then used a chemical to burn the root of the nail so it would come in again. Then he removed the excess tissue from that side.
Its fine now for 20 years and I never had any trouble again.

To begin with, see if you can get a nail clipper in under the nail on the side in question without causing unbearable pain. If you can, just clip it. If not, try using a razor blade and be very careful. (otherwise it will be a bloody mess ;))

If it's infected and/or too painful to cut all of the offending part of the nail, cut as much as you can. If you think it's infected, you can then try and wait to see if your immune system can take care of it. (might take a week) Then, if it gets less sore, and the skin dies around the infected area, cut open the now dead skin and squeeze out that lovely, white goo that probably resides in there. After that, just wait for it to heal.

Personally I waited for the tissue around the nail to die, that way it didn't sting like a little bitch when I went in with some scissors and tweezers.

If it gets really bad though, you may need to head in and have it removed.

I dont recommend cutting out the corner on the affected side- its ingrown because it was too short in the corner and continues to grow into the flesh. You want the nail edge to be past the corner, but not too long to rub on a shoe.
