Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Iraqi Constitutional Convention has beaten the deadline and has a draft Constitution.

Though it hasn't been voted on yet, this is the first step to a better future for the Iraqi People.

They have decided on a self-imposed 3 day delay to iron some difficulties but all in all it is finished and has been submitted.

I don't understand why a constitution is so necessary.... I suppose it is a boil-in-the-bag democracy, which does need a quick legal set up to get it rolling... oh well. Here's hoping it's a modern constitution, and doesn't look as if it was written up in the 1400s.

It is good in that this may help neutralise the sting of the insurgency, but it is a serious consideration that this could further isolate the Sunnis.

How since the Sunnis did have input in it. Also, the sunnis will be able to vote for or against it. Sunni Imams are trying to get the Sunnis to register to vote after they said not to when the constitutional convention was being voted on.

It'll be interesting to see though. They do have veto power so we shall see.

The sunni's to the south may start pushing for an independant state, as will the Kurds to the north (as they have been already for god knows how long) which will piss off turkey to no end. Keeping Iraq together with laws that all the groups can agree on is going to be rather tough.

Like federalism and the role of Islamic law (Shia law) in the constitution, and women's rights, but yeah, other than that.. :D

Umm, I know a certain country that still hasn't ironed those things out and they've had their constitution for a very long time... ;)

Not exactly a ringing endorsement is it? LOL ;)

Since when has the US dealt with Islamic Sharia law in our constitution? ;) And I think we've ironed out women's rights and federalism...

The Sunnis NEED the other groups, otherwise they'd've split off already. The oil lies in territory controlled by the other groups, and they want the revenue.

Is this the one where women have fewer rights than under Saddam Hussein?

The sunnis did in fact have a part in this, and this was marginalize any former Saddam supporters out there. Sunnis will be able to put their heads up in confidence after this. I find this very relieving news.

There will be no more pushes towards an independent state at least for the Kurds. I think no one wants to break up Iraq because that will cause quite a few problems.

Oh and by the way, women had very few rights under Saddam, and more rights now. Women were brutalized under the Saddam dictatorship.
