Honestly, how many NSers have ever heard of a band called Alkaline Trio. I think they are an incredibly awesome band who should definately get more glory, they have a few sample songs at their homepage, AlkalineTrio.com.

I'd highly suggest listening to them for people who love absolutely stunning lyrics.

dunno what song i listened to but they sounded quite cool - the music is good but the singing was a tad whiney/emo for my liking... but then again i'm listening to Sepultura at the mo - and have been for the last few hours - so most vocals will sound lacking compared to Max :p

Yea, a lot of people say they sound whiny and emo-ish, but the truth is mostly that they suffer from Inagaddadavita sydrome, as I'll call it.

Plus, I don't think their lyrics correspond well with emo, though they do sing one or two break up songs. Most of the one's that sound like break up songs typically have nothing to do with women or dating. Very poetic lyrics.

You know, Inagaddadavita by Iron Butterfly.

Most of Alkaline Trio's albums were made while they were heavily intoxicated with random stuff.

if you need drugs to help you write music, i feel sorry for you.

alkaline trio is a good band.

i kinda like songs about girls and love and breakups. most of the time. every now and then i do deviate, but as a general rule, i like love songs.

I think they're incredibly crap. Their new album makes them sound like they wish they were AFI.

For people who don't know - AFI used to sound like they wished they were The Misfits.

I first heard a track called 'Back To Hell' on a compilation CD of music chosen by Green Day that came free with a music magazine. Since then I've picked up a few of their tracks here and there, but I haven't got any albums. They seem quite good, but I wouldn't exactly say they bowl me over, or strike me as being in the Dylan/Strummer/Farrar/Adams class of songwriters. But, I'd definitely be open to listening to more of their material.

This would be the confusion between actual emo and EMO according to today's standards.

Sunny Day Real Estate were pioneers of emo, yet i don't think you could call any of their songs "break-up" songs. All those bands that sing nothing but break-up songs (Brand New, My Chemical Romance, Simple Plan) they are really just corporate packaging with emo flavoring. I'm not saying I don't like their music (although they are a bit repetitive and unchanging) but essentially they are just pop.

Unfortunately, that means you will hear more from and about them than a great band like Alkaline Trio.

Go home tonight and take all of your records, tapes and all your CD's and burn them. Because, you know all those musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fucking high on drugs, man."

The Ramones, of course, used to sound like they wished they were me.

'Cause I'm so badass.

That's why.

heh damn straight man

apart from all those musicians, Aldous Huxley among other great writers used drugs as a muse... or of course just for fun :P
Huxley's drug of choice was acid, FYI

Huxley's drug of choice was acid, FYI

Not exactly. He wrote BNW on mescaline/psilocybin. He only discovered acid a bit later - but when he did, he suggested that it should be the basis for a global religion. And many other writers have been influenced by nature's cornucopia too - notably the Romantics (for whom opium was the key).

I owned two of their albums, but I stopped listening to them a couple years back.

To me they are decent but nothing that special.
