Tasers for everyone!

Its an idea I've been turning over in my head for some time, and I think that now, is the time to implement. Simply put, the plan is to put a stun gun (not neccessarily one from Taser International) into the hands of every individual (over 12-16) who can pass a simple course on maintenance, use, safety guidlines, etc.
The benefits of this are many, the most obvious ones being:
An Equalizer -- No matter how big you are, a taser will take you down, further taser's trump knives in all respects (except for lethality)
Generally non-lethal -- Yeah, some people suffer heart attacks, but if someone breaks into your house, they don't deserve much concern anyway. However, the death rate from tasers is somewhat lower than the deathrates from firearms. <--Note, dramatic understatement for humorous ironic effect.
Fast Incapaciation -- All ready covered under equalizer, but, the hell, tasers are more effective than some firearms. (Yes, I am sure that your daddy has a rifle that can kill a wooly mammoth from a mile away with a single shot, I am also sure that I don't care.)
Short range -- No one will be tempted to start shooting people from 20 yards down the hall, mainly because they can't. This might reduce the amount of times I receive that e-mail about the man who accidentally shot his son, his son's girlfriend, his dog, and a bus full of nuns because they were sneaking around his basement.
Specific -- No Submachinestunguns or shotstunguns to cause worries abou those pain in the ass innocent bystanders
So any thoughts?

I prefer getting zapped by stun guns than tasers.
I spent several months engaging in a lovely series of 'stun gun tag' sessions with my friends. I've absorbed a lot of voltage. :p Eventually, we switched to wooden and bamboo practice swords because they make nicer bruises. :)
All of us in high school would just mess around with them.
Hell, us in the waterpolo team would like to see how a taser works against the opposing team when we're all in the water, sadly yet humorously.

That is what the ccourse is for. Too pass it you have to complete a test of which the third question is: "Are you now, or have you been, Colodia?". So, :p!
Anyway, the taser/stun-gun would follow similar guidelines to cars, classes, tests, revocation of rights if you do something stupid (like tasering a swimming pool).
Oh yeah. Tasers rock, especially the crackling sound they make.

It's a kickass idea, but I assume you're saying that we'd then make firearms illegal? Which would inspire me to ask you about what happens when someone gets an illegal firearm and starts shooting from a distance? You're done for.

Great, so all criminals would be armed. How much easier would it be to mug somebody if you had a taser? It would also mean more people would be capable of crime and mugging, a young teenager could take down a full grown man for example.
Leave the tasers to the police, it's their job, not yours.

Statistically, it wouldnt be a problem.
9/10 shootings occur within "point blank" range.
As for the 10th.....I dunno...call the police maybe?

I'm guessing you're American, here in the UK hardly anyone has a gun, you'd do well to adopt the same measures we have

This is not true, different people react to electric shock differently. Tasers have proven to be far less effective than pepper spray (which seems to affect everyone equally).
Pepper spray and mace are vastly superior to tasers. In any case, what you propose makes no sense. You say everyone must have one but then say they must pass safety tests and attend courses, are you proposing that people be forced by the government to take these courses and tests? If you are, then I definitely dont want any part of that, I preffer having the freedom to take classes only if I feel like it. If you didnt mean that the government should force people to take these classes, then you are proposing nothing new, such safety classes already exist and people can already buy stun guns and tasers, so whats your point? you are proposing nothing.

You aint kidding.
Although, you should know that theres an assload of us Americans, who dont need, or own guns.
The idea that every american owns a gun is a stereotype.

Tasers can be lethal, if you use it several times on someone, they might get in a coma or even die, equipping everyone with weapons of what sort would be a bad ieda, people would be more likely to use them, as a joke, and imagine; if everyone has them, there are huge chances of a kid grabbing them saying:" Hell it's not like a REAL gun; it can't kill you", and then using it on a friend (say 6 years old?) what would be the effect you think?
I say: ban arms, ban the military :D

No...your just not listening.
People are required, usually, to have a permit to own a gun.
Different states have different rules for obtaining such permits.
Hes proposing that the same rule be applied to taser/stun gun ownership.
AND....that everyone have the RIGHT, and is encouraged...to own a stungun.

Sorry if I was burning straw dolls there. :)
I was replying to an earlier post where you posted 'NEWSFLASH...Criminals have guns...' or something like that. I was trying to make the point that handing out tasers would actually increase the power of criminals in many countries and probably wouldn't solve the problem in America either.

Agreed..give an idiot a weapon..and he'll probably use it on someone.
However...with the gross numbers of guns in America...if everyone did have a stungun.....it really couldnt hurt.
In fact...it might even reduce the number of fatal shooting deaths in this country.
Im not saying this is actually a good plan....but at this point..it couldnt hurt.

So, what he wants is more restrictions on stun guns and tasers but at the same time to promote them? Isnt that kind of a dumb contradiction? Everyone go out and buy yourself a taser now that its more difficult to do so! You used to have the right to buy it at the store without any further requirements, but now that you are required to obtain a license, go out and buy one!.
