Read this article concerning the Gov. of Ohio, Bob Taft

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apus_story.asp?category=1110&slug=Governor%20Charged%20Apology

First of all, I cannot stand Bob Taft and how he has soiled the great Taft name here in Ohio.

Second, though, I think this is idiotic to expect someone to keep track of this kind of stuff. I know personally I have had many people pay for things which are over $75 and I would also be screwed if someone expected me to keep track of it. Also, I know the people who I pay for would be screwed. All of you who are in a relationship and do not file your taxes jointly would be screwed.

I never thought I'd see a day when I sympathize with Gov. Bob Taft.

The difference being that he is required by law to do so and you are not.

He also has a staff that is supposed to be doing this, and you do not.

Besides, the total gifts was $6,000, which is a LOT of $75 rounds of golf. ;)

Very true, but I moreso disagree with the law itself and assert that if I was bound to this law, I'd be screwed. And I would be willing to bet that he doen't have personnel who follow him a record every cent he spends personally or receives perosnally.

I'm not sure when the dollar amount was set, so it's quite possible it has never been ajusted for inflation and the like, but I agree with the law, mainly because I've seen too many "Good Ol' Boy" politics back home to give free reign with these gifts.

And actually, he's supposed to. When I was working as a graduate assistant for my university, the VP who was my boss showed me what she had to go through every time she got any sort of gift from ANYBODY because she was in position to infulance admitance and fin aid for the university. Hell, I ended up in the same boat when a happy parent gave me a rather large tip at the end of a tour I was conducting.

It's a bloody pain, but I also understand the reasons why. Even if it is truely inocent (no one could ever think of how I could infulance an admit decision as a mere student), the apperence could lead to trouble later on, as it did with Gov Taft.

(not arguing, BTW, explaining the laws. I had to get a down and dirty run down due to said tip)

Oh I understand, but a golfing outing?!? I'm sure he also pays for a lot of people's stuff too. And for him to pay it back. I thought that was ridiculous.

Hey, the law is the law, whether you think it's ridiculous or not. And the governor is elected to enforce the law.

If Taft thought the gift disclosure law was wrong, he could have tried to get the state legislature to change it. But he's bound to follow the law while it remains the law of the state of Ohio. It's not his prerogative to exempt himself from it.

Did people learn nothing from Richard Nixon?

the cancer of political corruption starts as a trickle not a flood. and we're currently up to our noses in it. it's festering everywhere and what slimebags are caught it's only because their hubris had led them to think their untouchable. They choke on even what crumbs of minimal reporting they're required to do...
