What awesome news. Unfortunately I couldn't find the picture of Nils Olav strolling up and down in front of the royal guard, who were standing to attention, except the small, and a bit indistinct one above. But still, I am glad to see the furtherment of the penguin agenda, and that the Norwegian military refuses to bow to racial prejudices. That penguin can teach us a lot.

I saw this on the news last night.

When the footage of the penguin inspecting the troops came up, I was expecting it to find something wrong and peck the crap out of one of them.

oh no.... now my existance feels emptier having NOT seen that. Nothing more terrifying than an enraged penguin finding something wrong with his troops.

and now I have an image of a war torn countryside... a solitary whistle sounding out, and a penguin getting up out of a trench and leading his troops in a frantic waddle towards the enemy positions. Damn... what a hero he'd be.

...ordering the charge with an epic movement of his wing, as in all good war movies...

I don't like it, first they let penguins join the army, next they'll let penguins run the army, then they'll be starting the wars. What's to stop the penguins taking over. Fight the fascist penguin oppression comrades!

"The penguin which was promoted is not the original Nils Olav. He died in 1987 and was replaced by a two-year-old penguin."

By international treaty, nobody owns Antarctica. However, Norway still claims a sizable chunk of the continent.

And it was a Norwegian who first reached the South Pole, after all. (Not that there are any penguins at the South Pole; they stick to the coasts. But logic isn't an absolute requirement here.)

news story (http://scotlandtoday.scottishtv.co.uk/content/default.asp?page=s1_1_1&newsid=8631)

17 August 2005 17:56

An Edinburgh resident has been promoted to one of the most senior ranks in the Norwegian Army after a special ceremony at his home. But Colonel in Chief of the Royal Norwegian Guard, Nils Olav, is no ordinary soldier. He is in fact a penguin.

Proud penguin Nils Olav was today inspecting his very own guard of honor. Nils was adopted by the Norwegian Army back in 1972 and as well as being designated their official mascot, was awarded the rank of Lance Corporal in the Royal Norwegian Guard. He has been promoted four times since then and was today given the top job - Colonel in Chief.

A large crowd turned out to watch the ceremony - at times though Nils seemed more interested in meeting his fans than accepting the honor and he seemed to be somewhat confused come presentation time. In the end, his medal had to be forcibly attached rather than formally presented.

Major Nils Egelien from the Norwegian Royal Guard Association said: "Colonel in chief because all the reports speak about his very, very good behaviour, and the service in this garden."
This VIP penguin was awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal by the organisers of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and a statue of Nils was unveiled next to his enclosure by the city's Lord Provost - he seemed to approve.

But does his promotion mean he will avoid active service from now on? Major Egelien said: "He will have frontline fighting duties."

Nils Olav is now back in with the rest of the troops. It is not known when this elite fighting force will be deployed again, but when they are, it is fair to say that the best possible penguin is in charge.

And here is the brave penguin with his elite commando force attempting to infiltrate an enemy bunkertop secret photograph (http://www.armchairempire.com/images/previews/multi-platform/madagascar/madagascar-4.jpg)

I hope PETA don't complain, but then a bunch of penguins with MP5s might storm PETA HQ if they do. :)

All hail Nils Olav!

What a great chap - unless he finds a stain on your uniform, I bet :D:D:D

(Having seen Madagascar, I know what Penguins are capabale of - "Just smile and wave, boys; smile and wave." And of course: "Remember, cute and cuddly, boys. Cute and cuddly...")

Penguins rock :p
