I live in Dublin, along with about 1.1 million other people.

also bear in mind that i'm sure most americans cities will be larger than those in Europe
Actually Europe has cities just as big as America. London and Moscow come to mind but there are also the likes of Paris and Rome whic are home to many millions of people.

The difference is that in America it's much easier to qualify as a "city" no matter how small you actually are.

Lake Elsinore, CA. population is about 40k, which to technically a small city. And it's getting 1,000+ every year. Plus, when you figure in outlying areas like Lakeland Village, North Elsinore, Terra Cotta, Alberhill, etc.

'Village' of about 7,000 just outside Nottingham. Except it's almost a suburb now, so i don't know whether I should be 3 - Medium Town (except it's not - it's just a village really), or 6 - Medium City (I think Nottingham is in the region of 250,000, but I might be wrong)

Nottingham City is 270,000. Greater Nottingham (which would include me I guess) is over 600,000. So make that 7 - Big City.

a few interesting things i found when looking up my own fair city:

It was the original point of departure for the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower. A memorial may be found on Town Quay

In common with most of the luxury liners of the time, the Titanic sailed from here, and it is still an important ocean liner port frequented by luxury ships such as the QE2, the Oriana, and most recently the Queen Mary 2 (which i saw leave on its maiden voyage a couple of months back). A memorial to the crew of the Titanic may be found in Andrews Park, on Above Bar Street.

It was a Southampton [football club] team member, Charles William Miller, who founded Brazil's first football club.

The Second World War hit Southampton particularly hard, because of its strategic importance as the major industrial area on the South Coast

there's a memorial by the Bargate that says 50,000 civilians and troops lost their lives in the bombing of the city in WW2 (as it was a military port, too - plenty of troops about; plus its one of the first and easiest places for nazi bombers to reach across the channel)

i also understand that Southampton University developed the first fibre optic cables (apparently lasers is the uni's specialist research field) :)

there, you learn something new every day :P

I live in Rochester, NY, which has 200,000 inhabitants. However, many people count metro areas when talking of cities. In that case, there are 1,000,000 here.

I'm east of you in the Adirondacks. A lot of Rochester people vacation here.

I live 30 minutes away from Edward's Air Force Base, and there are about 300,000 people. Although, because we have Lockhead Martin and all of the Air & Space Institutions, the population is increasing at a steady rate.

Although, I'll be moving to Yancyville, North Carolina right after I go to Italy on Saturday.

i live in tyler, tx at the moment. it's got a bit more than 80,000 people, apparently, but the whole thing is so spread out that it feels like a small town that goes on for miles and miles and not so much what i would call a proper city of any type. then again, i did grow up in Vermont, where there is far less space, unlike down here where it's a damn shame if you don't have enough property to your name to warrant buying a tractor mower.

I Live in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, which happens to be the biggest town in Britain, but compared to your average american town is quite small. And for all you americans out there, Yorkshire is pronounced Yorkshur. You don't say it as if the shire was a completely seperate word.

we have a few cities of comparible size, but they have more large ones... is what i meant. sorry i was up before 4am this morning and i've already driven to london and back this morning - i'm not really going to be with it today :p

oh and poll added
If you´re gonna play it that way... It´s believed roughly ½ of the earths human population live in the major cities of Asia and Africa, and at about 2050 it´s possible that number will be 3/4 of all humans. So those cities should outnumber both american and european.

Oh, and I live in Norberg, roughly 6,000 inhabitants and 702 years old. I.e.: We´re not big, but old :P

I've actually never stayed in the Adirondacks, just drive through there. But it's a beautiful place. My sister stays a friend's cabin on Lake George, though. Anyhow, where do you live exactly?

Los Angeles is *massive*, man. Still, it's not as big as New York City, which has a little over 30,000,000 in its metropolitan area. It's behind Tokyo by about 3,700,000.

Now, Tokyo... That's a whole other ballgame. Whoa.

I think it'll overtake New York City in the future because NYC is limited by space. Los Angeles isn't. Lets face it, there is a huge influx happening here. Not that is a good thing. And no, New York City as a whole has 22 million. Los Angeles isn't too far away.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City

"which is one of the largest urban conglomerations in the world with a population of over 22 million"

Los Angeles after all is growing very quickly...

We spend a week in Lake George every summer with friends-its an annual ritual my kids look foward to all year.
next year, we may camp out on one of the islands there.

Hong Kong, which has a population of just under 7mill (6,898,686 as of July 2005 according to the CIA handbook). Where I live, the population density is around 50 000 p/sq km.

Prior to this I was living in Kaitaia, NZ which has a population of a 3 or 4 thousand. The whole Far North region, which is probably twice the size of Hong Kong region has a population of 15 000.

Smallest place I ever lived was on Great Barrier island which at that time had a total population of about 700. This on an island of 285 sq km (in other words a population density of 2.4/sq km). Great Barrier island is 1/4 the area of Hong Kong region, though probably equal in size to the inhabitated areas of HK, as surprisingly more than 3/4 of the region is undeveloped and been left as country parks and nature reserves.
