Mo Mowlam died this morning. I have always had the upmost respect for this amazing woman. I didn't even know that she was ill.
She was always in my top 10 celebs that I'd invite to dinner.

Yes it is :( But they're not as biast-still not great tho!

Mo Mowlam was a british politician, former Northern Ireland secretary, MP and member of Blairs cabinet. She did wonders for the North-which is why I respect her so much. She has won numerous awards for peace.
She always got to the point, wasn't afraid to tell things like it is, regularly took the piss out of Bill Clinton re his 'I didn;t inhale' comments(to his face!).
Her work in the North has been outstanding. Unfortunately she left politics quite dillusioned as a result of a 'falling out' for want of a better word with Blair.

Oh, bloody hell. That's two damn good politicians gone in a matter of weeks. She'll be missed.

What did she do? Well, if nothing else, she helped broker the deal that effectively ended organised sectarian violence related to Northern Ireland. What happened after that was sporadic, disorganised and soon petered out - in 1997, as Secretary for Northern Ireland, Mrs. Mowlam helped put an end to the Troubles. In doing so she famously personally visited terrorists in the maximum security Maze prison to get them to agree to the deal.

In 1999 she was replaced, and became head of the Government's anti-drug capmaign - yet attracted attention by being one of the first (though certainly not the last!) Cabinet ministers to admit taking drugs while at Uni. Which, incidentally, was about a hundred yards away from where I'm at Uni :D

She had a brain tumour which was killed off in about 1999, but which probably came back, I'm not sure. The chemo made her lose her hair, and as an icebreaker during the tense peace talks in Northern Ireland she'd occasionally take the wig off and crack jokes. She died earlier this morning, presumably of related complications.

She'll be missed.

Very sad day, she was a great women with a fantastic sense of humour, which is unusual for politicians.
Also, she was suprisingly hottt in her younger days. ;)

Great woman, will be dearly missed.

Mo Mowlam was a compassionate, intelligent, fearless and above all, personable politician, and one of the few who made New Labour bearable. She will indeed be sadly missed.

Sky News and Fox News cooperate (i.e. they sometimes use each others reports, studio facilities etc etc). They are both owned by News International. But, I wouldn't have thought it's far to call them affiliates.. that implies a closer relationship.

Sky News appears to be quite a reputable news source.

Anyway, a side issue.

Very sad that someone so talented and respected has died. And at such a young age as well. She was a British politician with international respect and from what I have read had real courage in the way she conducted her role in Northern Ireland.

She sounds like a marvelous woman. I'm sorry I didn't know more about her. Anyone who offers intelligent solutions to the problem of conflict has my confidence. I offer the people of Northern Ireland my condolences.

So what if it is? Is this another of your knee-jerk reactions to anything that doesn't endorse your pecuilar brand of political idiocy?

Let's keep the idiotic sniping out of a thread which is supposed to be discussing the death of the Woman who was pretty much responsible for the end of the 'war' or 'troubles' in Northern Ireland... and she did it through talk instead of at the barrel of a gun.

Plenty of politicians around the world could do far worse than follow her example.

Rest In Peace.
She made a major contribution to keeping the talks on line.
She has my respect, and it is very rarely that I say that about politicians.

I see you chose to comment on that post to Backwoods rather than the first one I posted:

Backwoods was, after all, the first one to drag a political comment into the thread. It would be nice if you would at least make a gesture towards fairness.

:(

One of the very few geniunely nice politicians...carried on her job as Sec of State for NI despite suffering from a brain tumour...

And probably the only Sec of State that people in NI actually liked.

RIP

In fairness, all Backwoods said was "Isn't Sky an affiliate of Fox News?". It rather more betrays your political viewpoint that you automatically assume Backwoods is questioning the validity of a report offered by a source related to Fox News. (In fact,Sky News is owned by News International, as it Fox News - they cooperate but they do not have an affiliate relationship in the standard tv meaning).

They didn't mention Mo Mowlam on Swedish tv news at all today (well, I havent seen it if they did). Not very good.
