Absolutly NOT! My town is famous for the quality of its Dihydrogen Monoxide and related products. We'd be in serious trouble is there was. Think of the economy man!

This has been posted tonnes of times. Dihydrogen monoxide = H2O = water.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but it gets more annoying every time someone posts it.

This is one of the best pranks ever. Good thing my friend told me about it before I could be fooled. I wonder if I would've figured it out though.

This is retarded, like everyone's pointed out, DHMO is just water.

The guy even made this page for a specific reason, to show how people can label ANYTHING as dangerous.

This explains WHY the guy made the website.

What do you think? Should DHMO be banned?I voted yes. Most people don't know it, but DHMO is deadly in a pure form. It will burst your cells if you drink more than a cup. The scientific process is called plasmolysis.
Only if it's mixed with enough compounds will it be safe.
I know damn well it's H2O. Pure water will kill you. =P

*sigh* as usual the authoritarians want to ban anything "not good for you." They don't understand banning something doesn't eliminate it, it just makes the law more convoluted and pointless. Now they want to ban something almost as innocent as water! What's next, banning carbon?

You guys should have left this going on longer, someone was going to say yes. I say this on an episode of "Penn and Teller: Bullshit!", they tricked everyone at a (In my mind) "hippie" convention, where almost everyone said yes. Given the exact same facts as in the site.

Actually, DHMO would not be the chemical name for water. Water really isn't H20, but rather H+ OH-, it is an ionic compound, so the chemical name is actually Hydrogen Hydroxide. DHMO is just what joking people or non-chemists call it.

Water occasionally separates into its ionic components, but usually it is covalent. It's got a Keq of 10^14, I think.

To everyone else: I'm sorry for posting an overused joke, I'm sorry that I forgot that not only has it been here before, but I've done it before, and got a similar response. I apologize.

Actually, absolutely pure water is extremely rare. You could pass a law banning H2O in pure form and not change anything about the world. All the water that you have ever come across has had some trace ions dissolved in it, no matter how many times it is filtered. Pure H2O, among other things, does not conduct electricity very well, is sort of a purplish color (I think), and is not good to drink.

Similarly, ice is not slippery. People slip on ice because the pressure of stepping on it melts a tiny amount of ice, which turns to water, and they slip on the water. That's the principle behind ice skates.

I thought it was polar covalent. Even when it dissociates the daughter ions are stabilized through intermolecular interactions with other, undissociated water molecules.

Yeah, but what about the equally deadly chemical 'Hydroxyilic Acid'?

Hehehe... I still love the DHMO prank. :D

It is kinda weird, that (pure) water is actually quite corrosive to many materials. Hungry for them ions, it is. I had no idea that there was a name for that peculiar effect where hot water can (sometimes) freeze faster than cold water... the Mpemba Effect. :)

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure H2O is still clear and is fine to drink (I think it might taste bad though but it wouldn't harm you)

Although 'pure' water is 'rare' in nature, it is produced in labs quite commonly (usually called double distilled water however it typically is put in glass containers which lose ions to the liquid.

It is not purple...at all...yes it is bad for you to drink it since you happen to be an electrochemical cell and you'll throw your ion levels off.

Actually we should ban it and it's use in all products. And prevent people from drinking or eating anything with even trace amounts of this substance.

Doing so will
End world hunger
End All war
Restore the Natural Balance of the Planet

It is the best solution for planet earth...
So stop consuming Dihydrogen Oxide today.

I hate dihydride monoxide, it is a horrid molecule, infact it killed my dad and raped my mom. I can't believe that at one time I actually promoted such a substance.

I demand that all nations that allow the processing of this compound to be banned from Earth!!! Thats right, I propose that we dig up their continent and shift it out to space where they can go and process their precious "dihydride monoxide".... bastards... SICKINING!!!! :gundge:

By the way.... is there anyone who didnt know this stuff was water?
