What Phobias do you have?

ProMonkians

Most people have something they don't like, while not allways a full-on propper phobia they tend to be phobic about something or another. So in the interests of group therapy/gossip/boredom I thought it'd be good to share things, discuss, point, and laugh at each others fears.

Me:
ONE: I don't like it being obvious that what I'm standing on is suspended in mid-air - lifts, bridges, balconeys etc. I'm fine if what I'm standing on at least has the illusion of being ground (like in a flat not on the ground floor), but I get uncomfortable going up stairs where you can see the sides of the steps and the drop below.
TWO: Things that could potentially stick in my eye being near my face. Freaks me out this, I can't help imagining that I'll suddenly lurch foward and end up with a spoon or something embedded in my eye socket.

Now onto you...

I don't have any fears of anything anymore, at least no strong ones (I don't like needles, but I don't exactly fear them). I do have some pretty violent aversions though: I can't eat cheese, most fruit, or fish without gagging or throwing up. I can eat pizza and fish sticks fine though :D

Pathetic and stereotypical, I know, but I have a phobia of spiders. The small ones, mind you; I actually quite like tarantulas (yes, I know it's weird ;)).

I also don't like being in confined spaces where there are large crowds - I've had one or two panic attacks in such situations, though I'm not sure it would be classed as a phobia as such since it's not always that bad.

Oh, by the way, I agree with Vetalia; clowns are really sinister.

The mentally handi-capped.

I get very uncomfortable and gittery around people who are mentally handi-capped.

I am very nice to them, but I can not maintain very good composure around them--I get very stressed.

I would not say it is fear, nor is it dislike, it is tension.

Anything other little fears i have are nominal, that is the only one I find very difficult to control, though if it is a mentally handi-capped child I tend to be able to remain composed so as not to make the child feel uncomfortable, I dont like hurting childrens feelings.

It is so bad that my wife when we are out walking, will place herself in between me and the approaching person, or we will find a reason to alter our path, she doesnt understand it either but she respects that I have genuine uncontrollable 'condition'.

I wonder what it would be called?

I have a weird one. The spillway side of dams. I'm perfectly ok on the lake side, but if I go where I can see the spillway I start getting very dizzy, sick to the stomach and get a desparate urge to escape from the area as quickly as possible. Don't know why, its not the height because that dosn't bother me in any other scenario.

right here we go (i'm a OCD)

Insects and buggy things that fly (moths, butterflys and so on (they are day moths) except for bumble bees which it would make sense to be scared of as am alergic (I can't spell)

The noises for the senses magnum advert (it has the same effect as nails on blackboard for most people (i.e. the effect nails on blackboard has for most people I have this feeling for the noises in the senses magnum advert))

touching people I don't know in any way (am getting over this)

dust in drink

cockroaches

being above the ground at a low height (i'm fine on the top of a building but standing on chairs or on vaulting horses freaks me out)

being able to see the horison in all directions (freak out big time)

men (I just don't like them they smell wrong and are weird if they are not of my group)

spitting (the last person who spat in my direction got chased for over a mile and I had to be pulled off him by some of my teachers)

things in my faciel hair

climbing things

there is more but I have to log off

I'm not afraid of it, but rough surfaces make me really uncomfortable, to the point that if I find an uneven spot on my body, I have to fix it. It stems from a mild case of OCD.

Another thing I have a problem with is people who get really close behind me. I don't even have to know they're there, I get this prickly feeling on the back of my neck, and I turn around and there they are...

I just remembered my fear of swings. They creep me out when I see other people around them.
This dates back to a book I read while at the doctors (it was one of those children's books they have lying around). In it, a boy got hit by a swing. Ironically, I've actually been hit by a swing and it had no effect what-so-ever on my phobia.

I don't think I have any true phobias, that is, something I couldn't bare to face or endure.

Small spaces use to make me uneasy, but I went caving a couple times and got over it.

Crowds still make me a little uneasy, but I can ignore it easily.

I don't like clowns, but can't say I'm afraid of them.

I love heights and rollercoasters. I think insects, spiders, and reptiles are facinating, even beautiful.

The only thing that seriously gets my heart racing is the thought of losing my personal freedoms or living in an authoritarian government. I know that may sound weird, but it is true. But it's not a phobia because if such a thing were to happen, I could always fight it.

I am afraid of birds (they always land on me or dive bomb my head esp pigeons)
geese(the always chase me and honk)
and crickets(you never know when they are going to jump at you)

My husband is deathly afraid of spiders, so bad that he saw one in the front bathroom once while I was out of town and he just didn't go back in there until I got home(3 days later)

We made a deal when we got married that if I killed all the spiders in the house he would deal with anything else. I am not afraid of spiders anymore. I wish I could turn off my other phobias.
btw since we made the spider deal he has had to deal with 3 snakes on our property 2 scorpions countless crickets and grass hoppers and he had to chase off a javolina. (that is a huge scary pig) see it here home.gci.net/~akwataxidermy/Javolina.html not the actual one mind you but you get the idea.

i have a serious fear of snakes, so much so that im shivering just thinking about them. if im flicking through teevee channels and i accidentaly see one i scream, pull my legs up and curl up in a ball with my hands over my face then sort of gibber and shake for a few minutes. my heart starts thumping instantly, i start to hyperventilate, and i go very cold. i still have no idea where this fear comes from. my freinds used to have fun when they found out but then they stopped teasing after the first time they saw how it affected me.

but, i love heights, because ive been brought up to do a lot of mountaineering so i cant be scared of them.

Nothing really comes to mind. Seriously, almost everything that people are commonly afraid of thrills or fascinates me. Hell, I feel comfortable (or even better) around a lot of things that I should legitimately be afraid of.

I can only really remember one time that I was utterly terrified, the kind of feeling where you start to shake, your stomach tightens and shifts, your skin goes pale and cold, you start to sweat, and you can hear and feel your heart pounding. I was 14 at the time and there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of, in fact at the time I had no idea what it was that caused it.

Big one: Going out into the city at night. Bad stuff happened 4 (!) years ago and I finally decided to do s.th. about it, but since my treatment has only been going on for about 7 weeks now - can't really tell how well it will work.

Out of interest, I heard that there are two fears that all babies are born with (can't remember where)

falling, and loud noises.

I'm scared of choking, but I wouldn't call it a phobia because it doesn't really have much of an impact on my life. Sometimes, I imagine inhaling a bee or something that could sting me inside and I'd swell up, not be able to breathe, and be very scared. Hope no-one looses any sleep over this.

Also, when I'm looking through magazines or at pictures where there is a view from a height, I feel myself falling. I do however think about doing a sky dive, and at the same time worry about feeling paralysed, vomiting, wetting my pants and having a heart attack all at once.

sometimes I wish I could switch my brain off.

Hmm... well you cant physically vomit and be paralysed at the same time unless it is only partial paraylsis. As for the wetting part, dont worry this is a result of vast amounts of adrenalin being released into the blood stream, some scientists believe it is a built in flee mechanism, ie: piss yourself and you lose weight, giving you a little more speed.

I have a fear of The Dark that I realize is highly irrational (and, I hear, self-indulgent).

I'm also afraid of Thunder, which my mom finds ridiculous. She thinks I should fear lightening -- if anything -- which can actually harm you, rather than just noise. But then, that's why phobias are *irrational*.

I feel a bit less silly about the latter one though, because I found someone who is worse off than me. I recently spent a night at my cousin's and, during a thunderstorm, her husband called numerous times at two in the morning --scared as hell -- begging to come home. It was hilarious. Still, I did use their kids as a... crutch, or whatever. They all woke up and -- feigning concern for THEM -- I had them sleep on the floor next to me, because Thunder + The Dark = me crying and getting no sleep....

I fear both even when I'm with people, and thunder even during the day; leave me alone and I'm practically paralyzed.

Claustrophobia- When I was a little girl, I was playing hide and seek, and I was hiding under a blanket. The game ended, and no one could find me, so one of my very overweight friends jumped on the pile of blankets to sit down. Enough said.

I don't care for spiders....

Bugs don't bother me, but I was bitting on the inside of my upper thigh by a black widow, and well, it was not fun.

I also don't like needles. I've been in just about every accident possible, and broken everything from my toe to my back. Needles are always involved, in really not fun ways. So I get nervous when I know they are going to be poking me, don't care if they are poking someone else though :p.

But the accidents were fun right? :D

My only phobia is of spiders. I run when I see one.

Crashing dirtbikes and jetskis were fun. Being in airplanes with engine failure, train derailments, and elevators that crash a few stories.... Not so Fun. :D

Same with me. Its gotten to the point where I hope there isnt a life everlasting after death because I just hate the idea of being around for eternity.

edit: but then again I hope death isnt the end so I get rather confused about this.
That's pretty much exactly how I feel about the matter. The idea of being around forever terrifies me, but I don't want everything to end either.

Claustrophobia and arachibutyrophobia.
LOL Fass... thank you. I had to go look that up. :)

Me... I dunno, when it comes to bulbous-bodied, spindly-legged spiders, I'm an arachnophobe, I hate those buggers. I like tiny jumping spiders (we have these wonderful black-and-white-striped ones around here), and I don't mind big fuzzy tarantula types... unless it's the Sydney Funnel-Web Spider.

Um... is there a phobia for bathtub drains? I won't even put my feet near 'em. :)

Bugs getting in my ears. I had a flying ant do that, one time. Once I was done screaming and flailing and jamming my finger into my ear, I spent the next hour fishing the devastated bits of flying ant out of my ear.

Er... saying the wrong thing to people. I guess that means I'm shy. Kinda how Aurumankh described. :(

Oh, almost forgot this one: drowning under ice, ie. a frozen lake or river. The very thought terrifies me. Eek.

I also have a strong fear of old elevators. I was in this building today that had one from 1904 and I thought I was going to die in it. I took the stairs whenever I could. :(
You'd love the elevators where I live. Sometimes, they get bored, and instead of taking you where you want to go, they just turn off the control panel and take you on a random ride between various floors. :)

Heights - ladders, roof, heck I get a lil wobbly at times on a chair changing a light bulb (but greatest thrill of my life was my 15th birthday when Mom's friend took me up in her plane)

Spiders / Snakes - Not the kinda phobia that I become a blubbering mass, but rather I go into a killing frenzy on em.

Crowds - Im the type who always likes to be able to watch people around me, and too many makes that impossible, cant breathe in those situations. If smaller outing though I can enjoy it. It is better then going to the zoo for me when I am out watching how folks interact. It is kinda interesting then.. but crowds, forget it. (I did fight that down to go see Garth though, he was worth it, twice)

On a related note, isn't it kind of weird how you can look at someone else's phobia (assuming you don't share it), and go "How can they possibly be afraid of that??", and yet when it comes to something you're phobic about, it seems perfectly obvious that anyone should be afraid of it? :)

Snakes, for example. I love snakes, they're just the coolest; I can't fathom someone being terrified of them.

Spiders, however, are the most hideous and disgusting and revolting creatures on Earth. Nobody could possibly like those, gah! *shudder* :)

It's funny Ihad this exact same conversation with someone else only yesterday and I have absolutely NO idea of anything I could have a phobia about. :S

*cuddles her snake and picks up a cute huntsman spider*

Then again I DON'T like war and senseless violence. Does that count?

War has some good points. Boosts economies, topples evil doers. etc.

Spiders and snakes have no good points. just evil. *shivers*

arachibutyrophobia = a fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one's mouth.

GOD I SHOULD HAVE BECAME A SHRINK!!! they make up this crap and get oodles of money for treating it.

Sorry, but really, I understand not likeing having that happen, it sucks, but do we need a dang name for it ?

Shrinks are the 2nd best con game there is heh, 1st of course being religious leaders.

Course guess I could be wrong, but with that type of fear, isnt it easy to combat ? Stay away from peanutbutter ?

I have gymnophobia (fear of the naked body, mine and others), in part because it leaves me without weapons. More impportantly, the human body is rather revolting below the waist. Hairy man ass and the oddity that is female genitalia really throw me off balance, and then you consider the number of things that legs do when not perfectly taken care of, ugh.

When I was little I got hit in the back of the head with a swing. I had to get about 6 stitches.

I am afraid of... talking to girls. I just get this feeling that somehow I'm going to say something stupid that will bite me in the butt later.

Also, where I live is full of nothing. I'm talking thousands of square miles of grass. It gets insanely dark, as there is often no light for at least a dozen miles from where you're standing. But I'm afraid of seeing someone walking down my driveway, wearing camoflage, a ski mask, a kevlar vest, and holding an AK-47.
Then, there's the idea of seeing someone wearing freaky face paint looking in my window, smiling, and breaking in. I was actually afraid to show any of my body through any window for about a month and a half because of that.
