For god's sake don't try to follow the examples of many modern country stars. They've taken what should be a genre of music about fighting, addiction, nasty breakups, cheating on one's spouse, and illicit premarital sex and turned it into fucking soft rock.

DO NOT write about 9-11/Iraq/America is great/Freedom. It makes country music, well, lame.

If you just want to get on a country station/make money though, do it. Definitely write about Jesus, that'll get you megabucks. They did it on South Park once. (Giggles uncontrollably) Oh kartman, you fat b*******

Country death song by the violent femmes is a good start.
After 6 days of playing, its one of the few songs I can play on my bass guitar :D
Country music.... It isn't great. Okay, it's fine if you like yokel music.

I like a few country songs. As my nation name (named after a German industrial metal band) suggests, I am more of a rock person.
Okay, here's what you should NOT write a song about:
*9/11
*The war in Iraq (especially if you are against it like the Dixie Chicks.)
*How über awesome you think America is
*Anything political (country music + politics is a big NO. Those two should not be mixed.)
*A dead skunk in the middle of the road...
What is okay to write about (typical country music topics):
*Getting drunk
*Breakups
*Both of the above
*Criminal activity
*Shooting a man in Reno just to watch him die. :p
I demand a song about a dead skunk in the middle of the road!I would pay for that!

Die in a fire.
 You know, as brutal as this is, I can't help but agree. A little piece of me dies every time I am exposed to country music.

You haven't heard the right country music. Some of it is pretty good, but like every genre of music, most of it is a steaming pile of pigshit.

Most of every genre is shit? I beg to differ. There are genres that most of the music I can at least listen to, even if I'm not crazy about it. What is the 'good' country, exactly?

Kenny Rogers has some good tunes, Charlie Daniels band is ok when they're not being racist jingoistic fundamentalists, Dolly Parton's had some great songs, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris has some fantastic songs, George Jones had good tunes, Hank Williams (the elder) is among my favorite musicians. The list can go on for a long, long time.

The first time I heard that song Frank Zappa was covering it.
