Wilder vs. Depp

A poll for those who have seen both Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It doesn't matter which movie you preferred...

Whom did you prefer as Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp?

As for myself, I really can't decide. They're far too different to accurately compare. And both too marvelous.

I love the both of them as actors, but I can't deny the original charm of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. Both are marvelous, but Gene Wilder had the original spark and shine.

Wilder, too nice and unlike a Dahl hero.

Wilder, because he sang, had a bit more charm. Its weird because Depp could have sang too, he does have musical experience...

The new Oompa Loompa songs were really cool, but I like the originals more because they were catchy and you could repeat them.

Depp. I didn't like the original movie because all it was really was people singing, which was pretty lame. The new one has alot more comedy, and having only the Oompa Loompas sing is so much better than everyone singing.

It's going to be hard for me to post anything without descending into foul-mouthed threats of violence... Ah, sod it. Anyone voting for Depp should be forced, at gunpoint if neccessary, to develop some sort of aesthetic sense. How can you believe his shambolic Michael Jackson charicature holds a candle to Wilder's portrayal? Where's the charm, the elan, the slight air of menace? Wilder's Wonka was an uknowable heroic (and I mean 'heroic' in it's proper sense) figure, Depp's a pathetically readible child-man. Bah!

i actually think Wilder played a far more malicous character. i mean while Depp's Wonka just looked on, bewildered, as the children got sucked up the chocolate tube, turned into a blueberry, etc, Wilder looked like he was either enjoying it or was really bored (seen it before i think)... plus i absolutley love Wilder's pathetic and crass yelps of "help. stop. somebody do something." :p

Depp did a good job, but i just don't get why everyone claims the Wonka he plays is more "dark"
i agree with Stagecochia: Depp simply played a nutcase child-man (aka Wacko Jacko) which might be closer to the original character in the book, but that doesn't make it better.

however i like Depp too much to vote against him so i went for 'they both rule' :D

This is so weird. Wilder played a character much closer to what child-loving Dahl would have wanted, but Depp played... well, as usual, Depp perfectly acted out one of Tim Burton's twisted fantasies, which nonetheless may have been alluded to in the book. It's a very tough call, one which I am choosing not to make until I've seen them both five more times.

They were both fantastic. The films are very different from each other as are the actors styles but if I'd a gun to my head I'd pick Johnny Depp-
