Hi, Beautiful!! (For Women)

I think sometimes we forget what true beauty is. I can't really complain, I'm 110 pounds and 5"5. But I hate how the media and fashion makes us think we have to be a certain "type" This is "Beautiful Woman's Month" and with that theme in mind...
Hi, Beautiful!!
Did you know that it's Beautiful Women Month?
Facts On Figures: There are 3 billion women who don't look like super models and only eight who do.
Did you know Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14?
If Barbie was a real woman, she'd have to walk on all FOURS due to her proportions!
The average woman weighs 144 pounds, and wears between a size 12-14.
One out of every 4 college-aged women has an eating disorder.
The Models in the magazines are AIRBRUSHED!!! - NOT Perfect!!
A psychological study in 1995 found that 3 minutes spent looking at a Fashion Magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and SHAMEFUL!
Models 20 years ago weighed 8% Less than the average Woman.
Today they weigh 23% less......
~~ Beauty of a Woman ~~
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears,
The figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair.
The beauty of a woman must be seen from her eyes,
Because that is the doorway to her heart,
The place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole,
But true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives,
The passion that she shows.
The beauty of a woman
With time, only grows..
An English professor wrote the words: "WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS NOTHING" on the blackboard, and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.
The men wrote: "Woman, WITHOUT HER MAN, is nothing."
The women wrote: "WOMAN!! WITHOUT HER, man is nothing!"
The Images of Mother
4 YEARS OF AGE Y My Mommy can do anything!
8 YEARS OF AGE Y My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!
12 YEARS OF AGE Y My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.
14 YEARS OF AGE Y Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either!
16 YEARS OF AGE Y Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.
18 YEARS OF AGE Y That old woman? She's way out of date!
25 YEARS OF AGE Y Well, she might know a little bit about it.
35 YEARS OF AGE Y Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.
45 YEARS OF AGE Y Wonder what Mom would have thought about it?
65 YEARS OF GE Y Wish I could talk it over with Mom. . .

Well, who said anorexic, surgically modified women are attractive in the first place? And what real man would possibly prefer a picture of said woman (which is as close to a supermodel as he's ever likely to get) to a real, live, breathing, and friendly, albeit average-looking, woman? After all, the "average woman" is still plenty attractive.
Oh well. I guess my signature explains it all again.

I have begun to regularly shop at Lane Bryant and went ahead and got a credit card there. When my catalogue from them arrived, my boyfriend began looking through it with a confused look on his face. Then, he said, "This is the first catalogue I've ever seen with real women in it!"

the models in women's magasines are always a lot skinnier and more anorexic looking than women in men's magasines, dont get me wrong, women in men's magasines are generally still thin but they tend to look a lot more of a healthy thin, and they're usually nice and curvy, whereas in women's magasines and on catwalks the models look scarily thin i think it must be some kind of conspiracy amongst the women who write women's magasines
I don't know if it helps you ladies in any way, but my definition of beauty requires a certain minimum that seperates it from what I would consider "ugly" and from then on, character makes up the rest.

i remember those worst ages for self image. 13 to......20 ish .. i remember the horribly harsh judgement we made of ourselves and our classmates/friends
now when i look at teen girls i see such a marvelous natural beauty that it makes me sad for the girls we used to be and how we didnt know what beautiful was.

It has a lot more to do with advertisers than anything else. If you look up the history of one of the magazines (whose name, of course I can't remember...names are a weak spot for me...a-apparently...) there was one that tried to be for women instead of prey on them.
It turned out that cosmetic companies would not advertise if the issue suggested that women don't need make-up and other advertisers like automotive (it seems a big advertiser for magazines) wouldn't advertise in the womens magazines to make up the gap. It became a constant battle over content with the magazine and the advertisers making a progressive magazine impossible unless it sold for a much higher price that a magazine justifies.
And people say advertising doesn't effect them, advertising's greatest trick.
Women are hot, by default. For the most part a woman has to go out of thier way to not be hot. But I'm a dude, I'm wired that way.

Bumped for all the beautiful women of NS! :)
I've seen Paris Hilton in the flesh, and she looks horrid. Worse then death warmed over.
I agree...the only thing that keeps her in the news is the fact that she is rich and nearly naked 1/2 the time. Were she not rich no one would look twice at her.
Funny, I was kind of thinking about this today...I saw this group of teenage girls hanging out in front of the bakery, and they were all kind of plain looking...but then I realised...they're not homely, they're just normal. Hair in simple ponytails, no makeup, understated clothes...each one of them could look fabulous if they were 'all done up'...but cripes...who wants to go through that much trouble? Who really wants to spend hours to have your hair 'just so', your nails perfect, your lips and eyes done up, in highest fashion...our ideas of 'beautiful' are just skewed. Why should woman think they have to look 'fabulous', when they look just fine normally? These celebrities...they have all the time in the world to dress up like dolls...but heaven's forbid they every have their bathing suits ride up, or show a bit of cellulite, or have a bad hair day, because the cameras are waiting eagerly to catch every ugly moment.
Screw that. Plain IS beautiful.

I'm overweight, relatively average looking and not particularly tall (5'2", so quite short actually). And do you know what? I think I look a lot better than skinny, airbrushed, 'false' women, and I don't really give a damn if the vast majority of the rest of the world thinks I'm a dog or a stunner :) I am happy with the way I look and I don't feel any need whatsoever to kowtow to what society seems to expect. I agree with Ashmoria that it's very sad that there are all these lovely looking girls out there who think they're hideous. Beauty is such a subjective thing anyway, than you can bet there is someone out there - probably quite a few, in fact - who think you're beautiful. You just need to convince yourself of that fact, and once you gain confidence, then you ooze even more beauty anyway ;)

The average woman weighs 144 pounds, and wears between a size 12-14.
Is that an average for the whole world? 1.2 billion people don't have enough food and the same number are overweight. Objectivism blah blah, thing is, everyone has a right to life, and as people in rich countries we have a responsibility to feed the world because we can.
It turned out that cosmetic companies would not advertise if the issue suggested that women don't need make-up and other advertisers like automotive (it seems a big advertiser for magazines) wouldn't advertise in the womens magazines to make up the gap.
This is a perfect example of how goddamn capitalism is destroying society slowly... by destroying the individuals who live in it. Keep up the good fight Steph.

You can tell a skinny model's air brushed when you can't see all of her ribcage. Long ago I was anorexic and I was never pretty skinny because of my rib cage. Now what does that tell you?

I've tried for 3 years to tell my gf that she doesn't need to wear makeup, yet she insists that she does. I'll admit that she's not "drop-dead gorgoues(sp)" or "smoking hot", but she has such an amazing natural beauty to her that I would never want to change for something so made up and artificial as what models or those that are thought of as "raging hot" use. So yes, props to all those natural women out there that take pride in not being models and weighing 50 lbs!

*Sigh* Unfortunately, Illicia, not all guys think like you, in fact I tend to find that most think the opposite. Virtually all the guys I know are quite picky about their girlfriends, and even just female friends, appearing in public wearing makeup, and frequently dole out "constructive criticism" to the girls who arent exactly svelte. I am 5' 2" and weigh 120 pounds, and I actually have had quite a few guys make comments to me about slimming down. Since I don't plan to deprive myself of the gloriousness that is food, this isnt going to happen, but if I'm getting picked on, then guys definitely do prefer twigs to the average woman.
I once dated a girl that was very skinny, twiggy even, and looking back now I wonder what I was thinking (well, for other reasons too, but that's included).
And unless the guys are telling you your mascara(sp) is running or you missed on the lipstick, I wouldn't think they could offer 'constructive critisism,' since they aren't wearing any (or are they...?). So, I'd just ignore them or kick them in the groin, whatever's more convencing for them. :D
As for weight, I'd guess whatever makes you comfortable with yourself is ok, to a point. Not like 1400 lbs, or the alternative of 50 lbs. I'd think 120 lbs is right for you, though I don't know your age (and am not asking!!! I have learned one thing!) I'd say my gf is anywhere from 100-130, though I'm not asking unless we are married! I think its perfect for her; not too skinny, but not too big, but just right.
I'm fairly overweight, have a cute face and incredible hair. I am self-confident, have long since given up obsessing over my looks, don't wear makeup, and wear whatever /I/ feel like.
My sister is skinny-to-average, same face, same hair. She wears makeup all the time because she says she doesn't feel pretty without it, slouches, diets because she's worried about gaining weight, so on and so forth.
Guess who gets complimented more often on their looks?
... Her, of course :D
But hers are more of the "I would like to have sexual intercourse with you because all of my buddies are around to hear me affirm my masculinity" type, whereas mine are the "People genuinely love me and have put great thought into this compliment" type.
The trick is this: good posture. Seriously.

"A man does not insist on physical beauty in a woman who raises his morale. In time he realizes she is beautiful, he just hadn't noticed it at first."

Intelligence and a beautiful soul are what makes a woman beautiful. All the rest is just window dressing. Models all look like 12 year old boys. I'll take a real woman any day. :D

If there were two women that found a guy attractive, both were very nice, intelligent with a good sense of humour but one was tall and slim while the other was shorter and a little overweight, seriously who would you choose? I'm sorry if I offend anyone but I'd choose the tall slim one.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone but I'd choose the tall slim one.If they were equal with all other respects except for physical appearance (which I assume you imply) I'd go for neither, because I wouldn't want to hurt either of their feelings. Any other decision wouldn't be made on appearance. It would be based on how I felt for the girl and not what she looked like.

My husband always tells me that confidence is beautiful.
I'm 5'6, a little overweight, but I carry it well- I've got a very curvy woman's figure, not a stick model's body.
I've never been thin, but I've never had problems getting dates, either. I've been told I have a cute, expressive face, I'm confident in how I look, and I'm fun to be around.
The magazines are definitely the biggest blow to my self esteem though- I could never look like that because I simply don't have the build. I don't fit the "traditional" ideals of beauty. But who cares? I know I'm beautiful no matter what the magazines promote, and I have a wonderful man who never stops telling me that :)

The other big issue, of course, is clothing.
If you make an outfit that will fit a size 2, and ALL the models shown are size 2, then the models match the outfits. The industry has turned models into breathing clothes-hangers.
And, of course, a size 2 model has a lot less of that 'difficult' stuff to cover...

My one and only female friend refuses to wear makeup. I'm a male, and I think the things that society seems to pressure women into putting themselves through is insane.
I'm glad she doesn't wear it. She says she doesn't look that good, but I personally think otherwise. The fact that she's prepared to not let herself be compromised by society's views is attractive to me.
Besides, I personally think she doesn't need makeup. I've always thought women shouldn't have to put themselves through that. Us men are easy. We don't demand hours of makeup. Just that you take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself means that you shower at least once a day, and that's about it.
It is personality that is the true beauty. Physical beauty is nice, but as the saying goes, it's only skin deep. Beauty of personality pervades the soul and pierces the consciousness. It lives on when the looks are gone.
The most successful marriages survive because they respect each other, understand each other emotionally, pay attention to each other, and are prepared to truly look after each other.
True beauty is being able to ask the hard questions, and being able to answer them. It's being honest. It's speaking to the potential, not belittling someone for their flaws.

I love this thread. Just this morning I was thinking about how stupid the media is and how we are constantly bombarded with thin celebrities and all this crap about how obesity is such a bad thing. I don't condone unhealthy habits, I just wish that people could live their lives without worrying so much about how fat they look or how skinny they aren't.
There's a website I visit fairly often about size acceptance, in case anyone else is interested. It's called Big Fat Blog (http://www.bigfatblog.com), check it out.

My lover is a former model herself. She no longer works in that field. The things that industry put her through almost killed her all to achieve some superficial 'look.' Want to know the most beautiful thing about her to me? Her smile. There's nothing more beautiful in the world to me than to see her happy. The heck with it if she doesn't have 'perfect proportions' or 'the look' or any of that. I'd rather have her with me, healthy and happy.
Besides how can you improve upon perfection? And to me she's perfect just being herself.
It seems to be a common theme on this thread and in other places to imply that thin women are somehow lacking in personality and are shallow. I find that offensive. My mother is model thin, and has been her whole life, except the four times she was pregnant. This has caused me to be sympathetic to women who are not taken seriously and assumed to be shallow because of the way they look. I see no difference between disrespecting or mocking overweight women and disrespecting or mocking thin women.
Oh, and I also don’t like people calling my dad a dog.

Actually it does make sense. How much harder is it to design clothes that are flattering to the real women's silouette...all those annoying curves just get in the way of the garment. If designers made a habit of modelling clothes on real female figures, they either would have to actually design them to be functional (a lot more work) or go broke. So they take the easy way out and have skeletons model them...that way no annoying bumpy bits like breasts and hips to get in the way of their ironing board shaped designs.

Yes, but it is undeniable that people seem to enjoy making fun of thin women, and it is far more accepted than making fun of fat women.
And yet, far less prevalent than making fun of 'fat' women.
I feel fortunate now that I've never felt like I've had to conform to anyone's standards but my own. I always figured that people who didn't care for the way I looked would ignore me, and people who liked the way I looked would seek me out, and those were the people to pay attention to. But beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, and when I mention to my girlfriends that I don't think I'm that attractive, I always finish that statement with, "but my husband thinks I'm plenty good lookin' and that's enough for me."
My sister on the other hand has body dysmorphic disorder. I've sent her to such websites as goodplasticsurgery.com so she could see that these models she thinks are born with good bodies have actually been altered. I fear the damage has been done, though because she doesn't really believe it. :(

65 YEARS OF GE Y Wish I could talk it over with Mom. . .
That just reminded me of a Mark Twain quote.

Ok. I took it to mean that dogs (unprincipled men) preferred thin women while real men preferred “healthier” looking women. The whole real men prefer (fill random type of women in this place) is so overused that it was my first reaction.

Everytime I see a runway model on TV, all I can think is :
"Christ on a stick! Someone get that girl a sandwich before she dies!"
"You there...Skeletor...lick a damn pork chop!"

No worries. After thinking about it from your point of view, I can see and understand how you thought that. Next time I post something like that I'll make sure to explain what its supposed to mean :).

I try to compliment my female friends as often as possible, especially when they're deriding some aspect of their appearence. I hope that if I keep it up long enough they'll realise how other people see them...
Stop worrying, girls: You're all gorgeous! :)

Everytime I see a fat person all I can think is:
"For the love of god, would someone get them a treadmill"
"Hey buddy, put the fork DOWN!"

Well, it's good to know there are a few sane women in the world. ;)
My wife seldom wears makeup; I prefer her without it. For that matter, most of the women I dated prior to my marriage seldom, if ever, wore makeup. Not only do most women look better without it (I prefer clean, healthy skin), but when you start getting affectionate, makeup just gets in the way. God, I hate the taste of makeup!
My wife is also 5'10" and 160 pounds. Nice curves. :D
My point is that women worry too much. Any woman is going to have someone who finds her attractive; it's just a question of whether or not the woman allows that person to find her attractive. Too many women put themselves down and don't believe the compliments they get. It's depressing to see women not realize how beautiful they are.
And yes, there are a few shallow men out there who think women have to be perfect to be attractive. Ladies, just say "To Hell with them", and let them continue on their long, lonely, solitary quest for a supermodel who they'll never find.
:p

Yes, but it is undeniable that people seem to enjoy making fun of thin women, and it is far more accepted than making fun of fat women.
Hey, I posted this thread. I'm 110 pounds, 5"5 tall. I am quite thin. Naturally though, not because I don't eat, or because some stupid fashion rag says I should "look" this way. I was in no way making fun of thin people, I'd be making fun of myself!
I'm a married woman with two kids.. and while pregnant I got a taste of what over-weight women go through, not fun! There is a noticeable difference.
The other thing is as a married women, I won't look like I do forever. Both my husband and I as we age will not be so fabulous looking. We are aware of that. Heck Zep has even lost most of his hair.. but as I always tell him, It's not what is on the head, it's what is in it. Any long lasting relationship is not built on how one looks, if it is, it will fail as time takes hold of us all. Looks are only skin deep, but a brain and a personality can last you a lifetime!

I am beautiful... I think. Wait, I'm not a woman am I? Or am I? Or...

As far as that goes, I don't actually eat a lot, and I'm in better shape than a lot of thinner women I know. The reason I'm overweight is because I was on a medication that basically shut down my metabolism. I tend to get all high and mighty when people assume I sit around all day eating pork chops and bonbons.
On the other side of the coin, my 3 best friends (all male) and my youngest sister (not male) eat and eat and eat and eat and EAT and don't get much exercise and stay tiny. It's an inherited thing for the 3 friends, though for the life of me, I can't figure out where the sister gets it. One of the friends constantly complains about how skinny he is and how if he doesn't eat enough, he loses weight really fast. It makes me equally mad to hear people putting down skinny people.
Undelia said that it was more societally acceptable to make fun of thin women. In my experience, it's not societally acceptable to make fun of either fat or thin women, and it depends who you're with when you make a joke. I've seen people get chewed out for making fun of both groups, and I do tend to be more sensitive when it's a 'fat chick' joke (but I still find 'your momma' jokes amusing), but I can imagine it would be just as hurtful to be thin and have everyone think you're anorexic.
