I was looking at some old posts this morning and noticed something interesting. My join date is August 2003! Does this qualify me as an oldie? It so better!

Well, I'm just over a year old, and apparently I'm considered old. Quite possibly because it's very rare to see an '02 now, and the '03s seem to be leaving, or at least posting rarely.

You'll note that was also about the timeframe where the forums were moved to Jolt...for some reason, that seems to have killed General...maybe it's that we all used to have something in common - the incredible lag...

General forum used to hop all the time, year round, elections or not. Of course, when we moved to Jolt, I think we lost that feeling of uniqueness and individuality that the forums had...now we're just lumped in amongst all kinds of other games. Granted, we're a large section of it, but we're still just a section of it. Kinda makes it lose some of it's charm...

I blame part of it on stricter G forum rules.

It used to be we could post any thing we wanted, then came spam purges and the banning of pointless threads and then the banning of game threads. People got sick of being told what they weren't allowed to do, so they went elsewhere.* My first G forum post was in a thread later locked and banned: the infamous "Last one to post here wins"

Yeah, it has gotten stricter, which could've killed it for a lot of people. I think word games would be a good thing to have back, but I do think that the spam stuff is fine being terminated. After all, there are Spam and Chat sections on Jolt already.

Normack, Nyborg, The Basenji, Sparren, Vexilars, North East Europe, Blue Viper, and many more.

And, you're right. The rules haven't changed much, there're just fewer mods willing to participate in General and more mods willing to limit what can and cant be done in here.

I remember the days when it was a chore to clean up General - but we left it pretty much alone because that was what it was for. Gone are the days of fighting with neo-nazis, the TRUE general-royality, and nonsensical threads created because that's how you got to know your fellow NSers...

Now everyone's so damn serious when they debate, so hard-line...it's not fun to discuss anything anymore. Passion is wonderful, extremism isnt. General used to be full of passionate people, now it seems full of extremists...

The spam was what gave us friendships. Now that the spam threads are gone, where are we to go to just kick back and have fun? That's what made General General... The spam and chat threads in the rest of the Jolt forums arent OURS. We used to have our OWN forum for spam and chat - that's what General was. It's easy.

All you have to do is convince the mods to open up the General forum to General use again. Not just pointless debate and pseudo-RPing. This forum has become something the I don't believe it was meant to be, or should have been meant to be. It should have been a place to come to relax from the rigid IC etiquette enforced forums like NS, II and UN. Somewhere where you could just relax.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good RP. I've been in dozens, but I think that as everyone and their uncle and their cousin has become a mod, we've lost sight of the prupose of this forum.

Indeed...but the Mods dont listen to us anymore...all they know how to do is enforce the rules these days. They've forgotten how to be one of us generalites and become a law-enforcer instead of a moderator...

It used to be they'd post more, and I loved having the mods as one of us. Some of 'em do from time to time, which is good. I'd like to think that if I (in the probably very unlikely event) that I became a mod, it wouldn't change me. Yeah, I'd enforce the rules, but I'd still be a Generalite.

As mods? We used to see General as somewhat of a cesspool of whatever crap people wanted to post. We'd "wade" in from time to time to make sure it wasnt getting too far out of hand, or if someone complained that a thread was too graphic (violent / pornographic nature) or if there was a major flamefest going on (which happened kinda frequently). But, with those exceptions, we mostly left General alone - and at times, we'd go in there just to have fun and relax with the rest of the NS crowd.

Now the mods come through on a routine basis and lock threads that they dont like, or that they think are insulting - regardless of how true or humorous the thread...

No, Jolt automatically removes the old quotes :( It'd be incredibly difficult to make quote pyramids as extensive as those of lore...

Remember when a singly pyramid of one or two word posts would take FOREVER to scroll through?

Wont happen again, the Mods wouldnt allow it...

It seems to me that while the early mod selections were very good, what with you, Amerigo, RepProd, Melkor, Scolo and the like, recently, moderator selection has been less carefully thought out.

Eh, I think there's a good and bad side to that. I'd never want to think of General as a cesspool, but it would be nice if it was more relaxed. I dunno...the players seem to be fairly self-regulating, perhaps because of the mods.

I say cesspool because that's what it was at times (compared to the rest of the forums), but after a bit of tidying up from time to time, it became less of a cesspool and more of a hang-out forum.

And I wont post my opinion of any other mods, neither those I worked with, nor those selected since I left. The people that know me know what I think, and that's good enough for me. No need to start something...

Agreed.

It was a nice, comfy sort of cesspool.

Ah...I tend to have a good bit of respect for the mods, and the work they do, but I do wish that they were still active in General, or other parts of NS, as I said. I know a few still roleplay, and a few will once in a while take a peek into General..but it was..comforting, I suppose, that the mods were still one of "us".

I would argue that the mods Mod in General too much, and dont relax as much as they used to.

That's just the thing, of the mods, I only see Melkor and Euroslavia, who's only a n00b mod anyhow, acting like normal NS posters. Some others don't RP or show up in General anymore, or post at all aside from locking threads.

Yeah..Once in a while some of the others'll post, but nowhere near as often as those two, from what I've seen. I believe Myrth was the last mod we've had in a while that would post alot, if I recall correctly.

Ahh, but the problem is not how little the current mods post...the problem is what they do and dont allow in the forums anymore...

That's right, I forgot about Myrth (how could I!?). Myrth is/was "one of the gang". And that satanic barney pic in the NS player pics thread was hilarious.

We think part of the problem is that the mods are out of touch with the rest of NS.

I agree with you on that one. I just dont want people to read this thread (yeah right) and think that we just want mods to post in General more...

Yeah, I know, but I think if they took part in the forums more, they'd see what it needed.

I don't think anyone's going to come to that conclusion. I think the mods we have right now are too caught up with "being a mod" that they really aren't doing a great job. The old mods, yourself included, didn't seem to be interested in being a mod for the sake of being a mod, they wanted to help out with making NS a better, safer, friendlier place. (I'm making a small asumption here)

I can assure you that such were the intentions of those I knew as mods...however, I cannot speak of the intentions of the current mods as I dont know them and havent worked with them.

A mass petition to Salusa from all the users that agree with us to get the mods to take some time to understanding the people they mod. It's a longshot. But it's better than just discussing our downfall.

Petition's a nice idea, but yeah..I think Squorn's right. A lot of the newer people may not understand why.

Since when do Zems sleep? Do they sleep on Zems?

O.o Neut, how long has it been since you retired? I can't for the life of me remember, and it's driving me up the wall.

Retirement came sometime during early-mid 2004 I believe...shortly before the summer / move to Jolt.

Ahh, thank you. That would be why I dun remember your modship. *points to join date* If you don't mind my asking, what was your reason for retiring, or for that matter, what seems to be the general reason for a mod retiring? The real world taking up too much time for NS?

I have no comment on the reason for my own retirement. Most mods retire due to RL pressures. Modding can become quite time-consuming.

Wow, I opened this thread and thought that it'd be nothing but people saying "Ha! I'm way older than you!" and I wanted to live the glory days of NS yore before all you whippersnappers came into the picture. Sadly, I found none of them and somehow most of the great names I knew have been forgotten...

Fine. Im older than all of you.
It was better before mods (actually thats sorta true - it was better before mods (and the need for them, ie in the first 3 weeks when everyone was there for the RPing and there were only ~10,000 members... (most wernt on the forums...)))

It also seems that its a lot more regulated by players now... there are unspoken/unwritten rules that n00bs are expected to know.
