Here are some things that have the old school myth/fact dealy.

Africans, African Americans, etc...

Myth: They're all Gangsters.
Fact: Nope. In fact, around 78% of all African Americans are normal, respectable businessmen. Only a marginal percentage are 'gangstas' or pimps. But still, Pimps are pretty orginal idea.

Myth: They'll jump you.
Fact: If that was a true, then the economy would collapse.

Myth: They're all good with street smarts.
Fact: Yes, many are street smart, but many are also not street smart at all. They tend to be intune with every single problem just as much as everyone else, and sometimes, even more so.

Oriental...

Myth: They're all short.
Fact: Type up 'Yao Ming' in google search and tell me what you see.

Myth: They all know kung-fu.
Fact: Although I am proficient in Judo, Kickboxing, Hung Gar, and Tai Keet (spelled right, hopefully), no. Not every Oriental knows Kung-Fu.

Myth: They should feel bad about Pearl Harbour.
Fact: That's the Japanese, not all the orientals, and besides, the Americans nuked them, so who did it worse?

Myth: All their anscestors were ninjas
Fact: Not true. If that was true, then 2000-500 years ago every Oriental was a ninja, and that's not true, cus I know peasents, rebels, imperials, emperors and merchants existed as well.

Myth: They all like America
Fact: Pft. Look at the Nationstates General board right now.

Myth: They're racist to other people.
Fact: Nope. They're pretty nice, and just as tolerant as everyone else.

Myth: Jews are swindlers.
Fact: Jews are commanded in Torah to be honest in all business dealings and personal relationships. A good example is the commandment to not bear false witness.

Myth: Jews are an inferior race.
Fact: "Jew" is not a race, but a cultural identity. Jewish people come from many ethnic backgrounds.

Myth: Jews think they are better than everyone else.
Fact: Maybe some Jews have thought this way, but it is rare. Being kind and open to strangers, particularly non-Jews, is an essential part of being Jewish.

Myth: Jews regulate all aspects of the American media.
Fact: Oh wait ... we do ... ummm ... shhh! *applies neuralyser*

And I'll add more if it looks like there's more common stereotypes that catch my interest.

When you say African Americans, do you mean the people from Africa who are currently living in America? Or first generation immigrants from Africa?

Fact: Although I am proficient in Judo, Kickboxing, Hung Gar, and Tai Keet (spelled right, hopefully), no. Not every Oriental knows Kung-Fu.I think the proper term was Martial Arts, and not everyone knows martial arts

Fact: That's the Japanese, not all the orientals, and besides, the Americans nuked them, so who did it worse?your fact is correct about the Japanese, but then your previous fact should also specify Chinese.
as for who did it worse? that's a matter of opinion. For the A-bomb was dropped during a time of WAR and Pearl Harbor was done during PeaceTime.
one fact I can add, is that some schools in Japan gloss over Pearl Harbor. many Japanese visitors to the Arizona Memorial in Hawaii, learn about Pearl Harbor at that time. not in school. can't feel sorry about something your county did if you don't know about it.

but seriously, I can't tell if this is suppose to be a joke--I'm not sure of your definition of "businessmen", but does this mean that 22% of blacks fall into the catergories of "gangstas" "pimps", etc? That's not a very good percentage at all. I'm not sure how that would dispell this particular myth.

Also, I really think it's a misnomer to call blacks "african american". First of all, I'm white and it would be a mistake to call me a european american simply because my ancestors came over here no less than 4 generations ago and i have no association with europe whatsoever. also, you can be black and have ancestry outside of africa--australia for example. you're really not african-american unless you personally immigrated from africa.

Well, asians do tend to be shorter. Whites tend to be more pale :D I'm not sure how this is a myth.

That might have been true at one time. Less then a hundrid years ago Asia was drasticaly different in terms of diet and living standirds (access to medicine, clean water, est.). And it is still true to a limited extent, in the areas of Asia that are still impoverished and/or misgoverned.

We of Europe and America have only recently had our own jump in height due to diet and gradually increasing living standirds. Go take a look at battleship built in 1865 or even 1900. The doors and beds are so small, our ancestors were dwarfs!

How about the myth that white people (Caucasian, European Americans, Pale Skins, Blue-Eyed Devils, whatever the terminology you find proper at this exact moment in time) have some sort of special WHITE POWERS that cause them to be wealthier and more succesful than less endowed minoritty groups.
Just because your black or hispanic doesn't mean that everyone with paler skin will naturally do better than you. It doesn't mean that their is some tilt against you.

Asians

Fact: The adverage hight is quickly catching up to the West as nutrition improves. See 'Yao Ming'

Myth: All Asians share the same culture.
Fact: Asia is the largest land mass in the world, made up of dozens of countries, each with its own ethnic group and historical background. Many nations were influanced by China, but that's the same as saying all European nations were influanced by Rome.

Myth: All Asians are collective and are not individuals
Fact: Many Asian cultures promote group harmony over the individual, but all Asians are individual people who do not all march lockstep with everyone else.

Myth: Asians are good students.
Fact: Many Asian cultures place heavy value on education as a way to suceed in life and bring huge pressure to bare on their children. But anyone who thinks that all Asians are good students I invite them to spend time with MY students. I'll bring the protective padding.

Oh, shut your hole. This isn't a thread to make any ethinicty seem perfect or infallible, but only to talk about stereotypes.

I notice you've only commented on a Jew one, eh? Uh huh.

I dunno how serious this is... I'm awful at picking up tone :(

But if it is serious, does anyone out there, not just on NS but in the world as a whole, believe these stereotypes are 100% true of all members of that ethnic group/religion anyway?

How about this one?

Fact: Although people from asian countries do seem to have smaller builds on average than the average North American, probably due largely to differences in diet, people are smart enough to realize that the height of individuals is more on a bell-shaped curve, and individual asians can be tall, big, or flat out gigantic, just like some North Americans are short.

One proof against the Asian/height thing is that the world's tallest man was declared to be a Chinese farmer. I'll see if I can find the article.

Also, the myths about African-Americans were solely based on fear and scapegoating. Though honestly, a lot is also demographic. I know a lot of people from inner city areas who say the numbers are still quite amazing even though I haven't seen them myself. But, where I live, it's all BS.

I'd like to add to this list (satirical, so don't take offense--the original post still cracks me up):

Jews:

Myth: All Jews are stingy bankers.
Fact: Some Jews are also doctors and lawyers.

Blacks:

Myth: All blacks are uneduated criminals.
Fact: some blacks do not yet have a criminal record.

Elderly:

Myth: The elderly are useless.
Fact: If given the proper tools and extra time to complete tasks, some elderly can contribute to society.

Muslims:

Myth: All Muslims are terrorists.
Fact: Most Muslims merely support terrorism; very few blow themselves up.

You can be Jewish either by lineage (from the line of Abraham), or by faith (if you practice Judism). Most people who call themselves Jewish are both, but not necessarily.

For example, the Messianic Jews are people of Jewish heritage who are practicing Christians. A group of Jews (by heritage) who are evangelical Christians call themselves "Jews for Jesus".

So really, it can be either. But usually it's both.
