I definitely prefer cats. You don't have to take them on walks, bathe them, or clean up their poop, and they don't jump on you and bark obnoxiously when you see them. My cats can still greet me without being annoying and sometimes follow me on walks anyway. Plus, cats are much cuter. :)

Dogs! Cats only tolerate humans because they can't open the food tins themselves. The look at you in a slit-eyed way, and they are maddeningly superior.

Dogs are fanatically loyal - stupid often, but brave and faithful. Loyalty's rare these days, don't sniff at it.

The only bad thing about dogs is their tendency to stick their noses in quite inappropriate places… and the flings with teddybears.

I'm 100% on the dog side of this debate. German Shepard-Golden Lab mixes, to be really precise.

I do not think I would shed a tear if housecats went extinct tomorrow. Big Cats are cool, and barncats at least catch mice, but the common pet? Useless.

After Belinda left him, Peter MacKay said "I'm going home to my dogs. At least dogs are loyal". Even if I am not really a fan of Pete's, I have to agree with his love of dogs. They are loyal, lovable, playful, and guard your home while they're at it. I remember after a little crimewave in my subdivision that the police found the culprits and uncovered a map with all the dog-owning houses crossed off. I challenge someone to find a similar story about cats.

All that said, I have always wanted a pet turtle (if I were unable to have a dog).

Dogs Rule, cats drool!

Dogs are, by far, the best! This is why they are my national animal, incidentally.

Personally, I think that dogs are far superior even to human beings...at least, in the ways that REALLY matter!

Dogs do not hold grudges. Dogs know how to unconditionally LOVE. People sure as shit don't!!

Dogs can be trained for a variety of jobs assisting people in many areas, not the least of which are Seeing-Eye Dogs, Water-Rescue Dogs, Drug- and Bomb-Sniffing Dogs, K-9 Cops...hell there were dogs at the site of 9/11, and most of those rescued alive owe their livbes to those dogs!

Can you say that for CATS??

Didn't think so!!

Cats are the only animal I can think of that you train then to shit in a box in the living room, and you're happy when they do it!!

Cats can be trained to do alot more then that, they're just harder to train then dogs, because they're not social animals.

Wolves live in groups, other then cheetahs and lions cats all live alone. Needless to say it's easier to get a communal animal to do tricks then one who knows it can get buy fine without you.

Beautiful dogs!! I have a Black Lab/German Shepherd mix (Lyric) and she is adorable!

My favorite quote about dogs is from Will Rogers: "If all dogs do not go to Heaven, then, when I die, I want to go where they went." And I second that!!

I had a pet turtle when I was a kid. A yellowbelly turtle named Freddy. We had him out in the sun one day, so he wouldn't get softshell...and we turned our backs, and a couple seconds later he was GONE!! Don't believe turtles are slow...not for a sec!! That sucker booked and we never saw him again! Hope he managed to survive in the wild.

Actually, I have the same feeling about cats. They are messy and generally unpleasant.

Point up for you, cats definitely are not noisy. But neither is a well-trained dog noisy...unless there's a damned good reason for it to be noisy...like scaring off intruders, or warning of danger in the home.

I heard of a dog once that barked and barked and barked to get his family's attention while they were sleeping...and managed to lead them all out of the house seconds before a gas explaosion tore thru the whole place. Find me a cat that woulda done THAT!

On the other hand...anyone that my dog doesn't like...I don't like. Because my dog loves everyone! And she's a damned good watchdog, too. No sane person would break into my house with my dog around. They would have no way of knowing this dog's bark is a hell of a lot worse than her bite.

Then again, I don't know WHAT my dog's reaction wouild be to a stranger entering the home when no one was home...no one's ever been crazy enough to try it!

I heard an even more amazing story on an "amazing animals" type show once.

This family's house had caught on fire while they were sleeping. For whatever reason, no alarms went off (they may not have had working smoke detectors in the attic). Anyways, the family dog woke them up and dragged them out of bed - alerting them to the danger. The entire family got out. In all the fuss, they didn't think to wonder how the dog had gotten into the house - as he was an outside dog. They figured it out when the dog wouldn't eat for days after the fire and they examined him really closely. His mouth and paws were full of splinters. The dog had chewed and scratched his way through the door to get in and alert them.

WAY too true!! I nicknamed my dog "Wigglebutt" because she doesn't just wag her tail with excitement at seeing me...she wags her whole butt!! And, yes, I had a roomie who had a cat, and that cat got pissed off at me once, and took it out on me the rest of the time me and this roomie were living together. constantly went to the bathroom in my room, in hard-to reach, and hard to find places! We had to strip and sand the floor when we moved out of there! Cats can be really fucking mean!

And my crime against this cat??

I didn't feed it as often as it wanted to be fed. Why not? I was laid up in bed for three solid weeks following a hernia surgery and complications from same (I developed a sever hematoma) and could not even walk to the bathroom, let alone to feed this damn cat. I was using a bedpan!

My roomie, meanwhile, was working a shitpile of double-shifts, and so, this cat didn't get fed as often as it was used to...and it took it out on ME...as if I should have fed the cat, when I couldn't even get to the bathroom on my own!!

My DOG would have understood I was hurting, and I needed love and companionship, and my dog would not have left my side. This cat, on the other hand...no compassion whatsoever.

And I know this, too, because, later, after I was living on my own, without this former roomie (we're still good friends) I got my dog. And I had a different surgery. I was laid up in bed for a week over it. and my dog hardly EVER left my side. Only time she did was to eat and drink, and go to the bathroom...I had a friend coming over to let her outside every so often.

The fundamental difference between the two is that Cats are, seemingly, self-aware. For one thing, nasty cats just scratch and keep to themselves. Nasty dogs go out-and-out vicious with teeth.
Similarly, while nice dogs are more common than nice cats, their niceness seems to only extend to a sort of master and servant relationship. While most Cats look down on you from below, you do get some cats that treat you on the same level as themselves. When that's the case, the relationship with a nice cat is far more rewarding than one with a nice dog.

Nice Cats > Nice Dogs
Nasty Cats > Nasty Dogs

Thus, my vote swings to cats.

I've probably had a total of 30 cats in my life. I don't believe once i've had a cat attack my modem,or jump on my desk and mark my monitor as territory. Although I used to have a puppy who left a constant stream of urine wherever it walked. I actually have had cats bring me dead rabbits, moles, and rotten heads of cabbage, though. If you take care of your pets, they won't give you any disease at all. Dogs could give you rabies or salmonella, assuming they aren't properly maintained.

Actually...there are 250 different diseases YOU can give to your dog...but only SIX...can your dog give to you! And all six of them are pretty nasty, I agree, most of them involving worms...but, if you take CARE of your dog, there is never a need to worry about this.

Hell, my dog takes food right out of my mouth. I trained her to do it. She is so gentle...I can hold a peanut in my lips, and my dog will gently take the peanut from between my lips, and eat it. Never hurt me once, and never gotten any disease from my dog out of it, either.

The only experiences I have ever had with cats have all been negative. they shred your property, piss and shit all over your personal stuff if they ever get mad at you...dogs don't do that.

On the other hand, when I was a kid, once I had a chunk took out of my arm by a dog. I was wrestling with him, and he got over-excited and rambunctious. My fault. I don't hold it against the dog. He was playing and we got a bit too rough.

That is part of what I absolutely DETEST in cats. It's as if they act like they do not want you around, except when they hear the can opener...as if that is all you are good for!

My dog ALWAYS wants to be around me....and I love her for that. She is my companion, my friend, I can tell her anything and everything, and she'll never betray me...and she always makes everything better, just with a few kisses.

Only doggies can do that. Cats could care less about you. Cats hate humans...except when the can opener is running.

don't get me wrong, I would never intentionally hurt a cat. I'd even take care of your cat (IN YOUR HOME, NOT MINE!! - I don't want that awful cat-pee smell in MY house, you can't EVER get rid of it!) while you were away on vacation. But I'd NEVER want one as a pet for myself. EVER.

I like both, but Brodie (my cat) tells me that I like cats best. :D Dogs can sometimes be a bit too boisterous for my tastes, but I imagine that just takes some getting used to. Probably force me to exercise, at least... :)

Brodie's an odd cat. I'm allergic to cats. I'm not allergic to Brodie... I guess she's hypoallergenic. :)

And don't tell me cats are all cold and aloof and only like us because we can open the cat food tins. This little moggie won't leave me the hell alone! Every three minutes she's slinking into my room, singing as she goes, trying to get my attention so I'll play with her, or pet her, or noogie her head, or just hang out with her. She even greets us at the door when we come home. She's probably the sweetest cat on Earth... well, until you tickle her tummy. Then you find out that five out of six ends on a cat are sharp! My hands have looked like raw hamburger since we adopted her (I can't resist a fluffy tummy). :D

You know a cat loves you when she looks you in the eyes, and slow-blinks at you. =>_<=

Now... we just have to get a malamute to keep her company, and we're all set. :D

Yes, I agree, dogs CAN be rather boisterous, especially if they are not trained well. and it can take some getting used to. Myself, I'm afraid I'm rather biased, as I grew up with dogs my whole life...and my only experiences with cats have all been negative. Rotten cat-pee smell, getting clawed, scratched, bitten, spit at, having the cat shred my personal belongings and use my room as an extra littler box, etc. etc. etc.

So I hate cats.

The most miserable and rotten years of my life were the seven long, horrible dogless years I had in my life, because I lived in places that would not allow dogs. As soon as I could afford to do so, I immediately moved to a place where I COULD have dogs...and I got Lyric two weeks before I even moved into the new place, that's how eager I was to have a dog. A friend of mine let Lyric stay at her place until my new place was ready, and I spent every spare minute over at my friend's place, training and playing with my new doggie!

Same friend took care of my doggie when I went to Japan and Thailand for three weeks. Later, a different friend took her in for a few days when I had to make an emergency trip to New Jersey (I was living in Texas at the time) to help my mom with the aftermath of hurricane remanants that had left her flooded.

Now, of course, I live with my mom, in Pennsylvania. Before I moved up here, I made two separate car trips up here, each with just me and my dog and no one else. 1,700 miles one-way....one driver, and I did it in two days. My dog is so well-behaved in cars, she's a good traveler.

I even had her up front, in the cab of the moving truck with me, when I moved. I was towing my car behind the moving truck, but I let Lyric stay up with me, that is how well-behaved she is!

cats pwn dogs. sadly mine died only last week :(

besides i'm allergic to dog hair and come out in some weird rash if they lick me... so dogs are a big no-no for me (much as i do also think they're more dependent and, frankly, dumb than cats, and i can't stand the slobbering....)

Both dogs and cats only care about you because you are the food source. Cats do not need to show affection to get what they need because they were domesticated by Egyptians who sort of worshiped them. Dogs however were domesticated primarily for hunting, guarding, war (those crazy Romans) and later, herding. They needed to develop ways to get special attention and thus more food, because they had to work. So, over time, dogs have become remarkable at simulating what humans interpret as affection.

The only species of animals that are intelligent enough to actually love humans for reasons beyond food are dolphins, some species of monkey, great apes and some species of parrot.

I disagree. Completely. When I went to Japan and Thailand for three weeks, I left my dog with a friend who took care of her. She had her food source...so, by your theory, my dog should never have given a crap if I ever came back or not. But my dog was absolutely wild with joy to see me upon my return.

My dog also gets separation anxiety if I leave her. I mean, I can pull up to a convenience store, just for a coffee, and leave my dog in the car, and she starts whimpering and crying for me to come back. Yeah, now, my dog DOES know how to manipulate me, and milk me for everything she can get, don't get me wrong, she IS smart like that...but there's genuine love there, too.

In fact, one of my dog's nicknames comes from the very way in which she milks me for everything she can get. Once, I accidentally rolled her poor little paw in the automatic window of my car. Well, she let out a yelp that would hurt your heart...and I, of course, immediately rolled the window back down to release her.

Later, at home, I gave her half an aspirin, and massaged her poor paw and leg...I felt so terrible.

Later, that night, in bed, she stuck her leg and paw out to me as if to say, "see my boo-boo, Mommy?? Kiss it and make it better!" She was MILKING me to massage her poor little paw again, and so, of course, I did. So she earned the nickname of "boo-boo."

And in the most ironic turnabout ever...three days later, I accidentally closed my own hand in the automatic window of my car, and you know what? My dog was right...it DOES fucking hurt!! Them windows don't show any mercy!

But here's the beautiful part. My dog KNEW I hadn't done it on purpose, and readily forgave me for what I did. A cat would have held it against me until the day one or the other of us died.

Cats, baby. Gotta be cats. I love the little hunters to death. So cute, but sooo deadly (to small rodents and vermin anyway).

Though I will say this...
Without words, it is well understood between my dog and myself that....should it become necessary, my dog would give her life to save mine. And, in turn, were there ever but one scrap of food left for the two of us, I'd give it to her, and go hungry myself, before I'd let her go hungry.

And we both know this.
