Spelling problems with double letters?

Am I the only one here that has major problems remembering how to spell correctly certain words which have double letters in them? I would by no means consider myself as dyslexic or the like, and have a fairly respectable MA to my name, but despite this I still have major problems remembering the correct spelling of words such as 'neccessary'* or 'traveler'** or hundreds of other words which currently elude me. Is it just me or is this a fairly widespread problem?*** I seem to recall that several years ago I did actually come across a term for this problem, but I'm damned if I can remember what it was: is there a linguist or a philologist in the house?

* or even more troublesome - 'unneccessarilly'.

** I am aware that in some contexts this is actually rendered as 'traveller', and thus its inclusion here.

*** Skit's law: 'any spelling or grammar flame will itself contain spelling or grammatical errors' no doubt applies here, but its got to the stage of the night where I have had a few drinks, so I claim that in my defense.

English is hardly the most consistent of languages, is it. :D

I'll find myself stumbling over double letters... usually for me, it's adding extra letters where they're not needed, as opposed to dropping letters that are supposed to be there.

Usually, if I stop, and look at the 'shape' of the word that I've typed, without trying to perceive the individual letters, I can tell if I've spelled it correctly. :)

Its amasing that English is a popular as it is , eh? I guess when you got Germanic tribes, Romans, and the French creating/changing/adding to a language the rules tend to change a fair bit.

Snip

It's unnecessarily, and traveller is spelled with one or two 'l's if it's American English or British English, respectively. If you're concerned about your spelling, use a spell-checker for your posts.

Oh, and I admire your dedication to proper language. Far too few here do that.

Why, thank you, fellow pinko-commie Swedish comrade, for allowing me to plug the Firefox/Mozilla spellcheck extension once more: http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/

The majority of spell checkers are in American. Therefore, I do not use them; nor do I need them.
