Non-Brits: a quick question regarding tourism

say you were going to go on holiday to Britain.

if the Royal Family were no longer around or holding power (or alive), would this sway your decision to come visit the UK, bearing in mind all the castles and touristy stuff would still, in fact, still be there to see.
actually there would be more to see in that many of the royal's castles are currently very much closed to the public, and could be opened up in a Republic.
also bear in mind, just for the record (in case you were deluded otherwise) that, as a tourist - or even just a member of public - you are, in no way, ever going to actually see the queen, as it stands now.

so would britain being a republic deter you from visiting the UK as tourists?

edit: Brits, so we don't all have to keep clicking "view poll results" you may as well vote "Other" and be done with it. i really should have included a "i'm a brit" option...

I would still visit the UK whenever I get enough money for my European tour. There's still cool building in England.

Would you be more tempted to come if we had their severed heads on pikes outside the palace, or if we kept them in small cages for your amusement?

I hate London but I'd go down there just to see the heads on spikes.

For godness sakes! Ok simple thing: monachy exists, if you don't like it, tough. End of story. If you want it changed get yourself ielected as an MP, serve with distinction on the back benchs for a few years, become the leader of your party, win a general election and then start the long, messy, paper-ridden process of setting up a 10 year civil service enquiery into the possibility of a viable commitee being set up to ask the question "Do we need to do a review of asking the question "Do we need a monarchy"?" And then that commitee reports back to the civil service who add an extra 25000 pages and then insist on it being slowed down. By the time it becomes a White paper more than 50 years has passed and you are dead.

Or just let them be but don't give them any money.

(I'm British, but forgive me.)

If we were to dump the monarchy, we'd no longer be the United Kingdom, eh? We'd be the Federal Republic of Great Britain or somesuch.

I would still visit Britain as long as you didn't switch to a insane dictatorship like we have here in the U.S. but you said republic so thats fine, I suppose just be careful and don't start acting all rude and whatnot lol

I'd probably go if you did make it a republic. Just to see how you folks are forming it out of curiosity.

Biggest reason why I DON'T travel internationally however is the fact I'm an American, and Bush has really made it difficult for Americans worldwide.

I'm a Brit, but I would be more likely to remain in the UK if we could get rid of the monarchy. Although the thought of Tony Blair having supreme power scares me a little.

I'm glad the rest of the human race doesn't have this mentality. Otherwise we would still be living as feudal serfs (well I would anyway)

Nope. Discussing the nature or relevence of the monarchy is banned in the Houses of Parliament AFAIK.

It would probably be easier to channel Oliver Cromwell then to become a republic via parliament.

We would need to become a federal state first ;)

At the moment me are straddling in the middle between a federalist and unitary state.

I really couldn't be bothered one way or the other. The Royal Family would not be a make-or-break factor in whether I'd want to go to Great Britain.

I'd be more inclined to want to see HMS Victory or other exhibits of the Royal Navy anyway.

I doubt that I'd be more or less inclined to visit due to the fact that you do or don't have a Queen. Now if you had the €uro, that might change things a bit...:D

well i say this is pretty conclusive already - over 60% of those polled so far would visit the UK regardless of the state of our royal family...

or, to put it another way, the impact on tourism of removing the royal family would not be as devastating as many were saying in that other thread! :D :D
in fact, according to this, removing the monarchy would only drop tourist numbers by less than 6%! yeah the queen is just sooo important to our tourist industry then
ha. ha. ha.

ok its only an internet poll and relatively few have taken it (47 at time of writing) but the trend is pretty damn clear all the same!

glad i did this poll now :D

If we introduced that fake money then i'd leave Britain.
When the 'Royal' Navy is mentioned or the 'Royal' Airforce we know its the UK....everywhere else its the 'Royal Australian' etc..Royal Suadi...Camel brigades or some such.

There is only one truly 'Royal' nation on this earth and its the UK.
