NS name origins

Hemingsoft

I don't know if this has been done before, but I want to hear where people got their NS names from.

I've used Hemingsoft for years, ever since High School (freshmen year) when some kid said I would vie Bill Gates for computer OS. He said mine would be called Hemingsoft, based on my last name.

'Czardas' came from one of my titles as Supreme Ruler of the Multiverse. Actually, it was named after one of my 9 dogs, but don't tell anyone or I'll...I'll... I won't give you any cookies!
Rammsteinburg
15-08-2005, 13:22
My favourite band is Rammstein. I don't know why I added "burg" onto it.

The multiverse, a bizarre bit'o knwledge for an NSer to know about (besides myself). Or do you just know about it by name?
Kanabia

Meh, I sat there pondering and came up with "Kanabia", which sounded like a country.

No, It has no relevance to "Can of Beer" or "Cannabis", surprisingly :p

It's a name that was sometimes applied collectively to ALL of the British colonies in North America, not just the ones that federated to become Canada but also originally the ones that rebelled succesfully in the 1770s as well...
Compulsive Depression
15-08-2005, 13:44
I came up with mine in a fit of unimagination, as it fit my sense of humour. Plus "the Jingoistic States of Compulsive Depression" seems to fit together nicely.

Had I realised that forums (that I might occasionally post on) were involved, I'd've chosen something more becoming my advanced years. Rather than sounding like an over-angst'd teenager...

I wrote this ages ago. It's not written brilliantly, but I banged it up quickly at the time so everytime this thread came up I could copy+paste. Here it is:

Back in the day, (a few years ago actually) me and my best mate were N64 wh0res and one of the games we played was wcw/nwo revenge, a pro-wrestling game. One day I decided to re-name on of the made up characters. Being a southpark fan then too, I named him 'FiveassedmonkeymanVII' with the 'manVII' being added on in a spur of the moment thing. About a month later, I was discussing with this said friend what I should use for my yahoo msger ID (I just started using that again even though no one I know is ever on) and he suggested I use the fiveassed name, so I did, 'Fiveassedmonkeyman7' became my Yahoo ID. A few months later, I started playing the online game 'Planetarion' (sometime during Round 3 for people who know when that was) and stuck with the name for my planets ruler name. Using IRC became an important part of playing this game, and I was forced to shorten my name to 'Monkeyman7' for IRC. Sometime during the round, my birthday happened and some of my friends gave me an orange 'pimp' tshirt which I wore constantly. When round 4 of Planetarion started, I adjusted my ruler name slightly on the back of this tshirt to 'Fiveassedmonkeypimp7' or 'Monkeypimp' for IRC. When I started up on NS, I ran with it.

I got my name from liking English Humour. Wow. Was that informative?
Yupaenu
15-08-2005, 14:55

Dishonorable Scum
15-08-2005, 15:08
Mine comes from the game Europa Universalis II. Your reputation in the game varies according to how much conquering and treaty-breaking you've done. At the top is "Honorable", meaning you've been a complete pansy. "Dishonorable Scum" means you've been a bad, bad boy. :D

Though it is possible to be worse. The two lowest reputations are the descriptively named "Worse than Dishonorable Scum", and "Hated throughout the entire world". Ah, something to strive towards...

:p

EL CID THE HERO
15-08-2005, 15:17
I watched the film “El Cid” just before I created my nation. That was taken so I added in “the hero”. Sadly my brother had left the caps lock on.
Torontonias
15-08-2005, 15:23
Having just moved away from Toronto to a much smaller community, and being terribly uncreative, I decided that Torontonia sounded much better that Ruralia, unfortuneately, Torontonia was taken, so I added "s" to the end of it, you'd be suprised at how this works when it comes to registering on things.
Potinum
15-08-2005, 15:38
I really have no idea. It just came to me, but I wanted something that sounded Latin. It seems there is no such word which is a shame. Any suggestions where it came from would be usefull.
Armacor
15-08-2005, 15:48
in one of the RW RPs i run (home grown D20) there are only 18 corporate entities left in the world. In terms of Power they are:
1. Armacor (Abbriviated name for the General Armaments Corporation of South Africa)
2. CHS Citibanking Corp (a Merger between Bank of China, HSBC and Citigroup)
3. G20 Collective (the remaining 20 countries in the world)
4. Space Station Oberon (all that was the Armacor empire in orbit and above, before the civil war)

and a whole load of others... about 6 have made it to NS so far, including the 4 listed above, only 1 remains now ;-)

Mine's just my last name with a national-sounding ending attached to it. I use myself as my nation's president in roleplays.
Swilatia
15-08-2005, 15:55
I just came up with it randomly.
Bettia
15-08-2005, 16:00
My nation is named after my wife (awww), and in an impressive show of unoriginality, I just happen to share my name with the president.
Catalunya i Llenguadoc
15-08-2005, 16:00
My nation is called "Catalunya i Llenguadoc". They're two names of two nations. I live in Barcelona (Catalunya) (European Union). The name of Catalunya was occupated and I add Catalunya's Neighbors country, Llenguadoc.

Catalunya was divided between Spain and France but we have a different culture, history, people and language.

We celebrated an Olympic games in 1992 too.

We speak Catalan ( French and Spanish too).

It's not original but that's all.
Kahanistan
15-08-2005, 16:10
Well... I originally chose this name to rip on the Kahanist movement (Jewish Fascists who believe in expelling Arabs from the Palestinian territories. For information about Kahanism from a Kahanist viewpoint, I suggest http://www.kahane.org, http://www.masada2000.org, http://jdl.org.il, and http://www.jtf.org.) I had the idea that since both Israel and the Arabs were having trouble with these extremists, and Kahanists were claiming that if the West Bank and Gaza were made part of a Palestinian state (or in KahanistSpeak, an "Arab Muslim Nazi PLO terrorist state,") Israel would be cut in two, that that sounded like a good idea. In other words, I thought that Israel could give the West Bank and Gaza to the Palestinians (KahanistSpeak: "Palesimians"), cut off the southern tip of what we now call the Terrorist State of Israel, most of which is the inhospitable Negev Desert, relocate the Kahanists and other fascists there, rename it "Kahanistan" or something cool like that, and wash their hands of that extremist trash once and for all. If the Kahanists did something crazy, like attack the Palestinians, the US couldn't shield them in the UNSC like they do with the Terrorist State of Israel without losing what little credibility they have in the international community, and the Palestinians could defend themselves more effectively if it was just poorly armed and ill-trained Jewish extremists and not ordinary Israelis / IOF they were fighting against.

I kind of strayed from the point, I guess, but... eh.

Franxia
15-08-2005, 16:50
Just got back after a year in France and loved it, so France + cool-sounding ending = Franxia.
Charlen
15-08-2005, 16:59
Charlen comes from a story I wrote in high school about a world war between the super powers over the last remaining oil and food reserves. Charlen was the mythical utopia where there's more than enough food for everyone in the world, and in the end when a truce is made a territory with the last oil deposits is set aside to evenly distribute the oil to all nations while no nation has more control over it than another, and that area was named Charlen after the mythical utopia.

and in case anyone's wondering, it's pronounced Sharlin =P

perquè vas escollir 'llengadoc,' i no 'occitania'? l'occità es parla mes enllà de lengadòc (bé, suposo que depèn de si hi inclous el gascó etc. com a 'occità' o no hehe).

Little India
30-12-2005, 00:21
I honestly don't know...

The name I wanted was already taken. That really pis*ed me off.

I suppose it just came to me. I wanted Little Italy but that was also taken, so I became Little India and my region New Italy - it should have been the other way round, but, c'est la vie.
Sane Outcasts
30-12-2005, 00:29
My friends always tell me that I'm insane, which I counter by claiming the world is insane. When it came time for my nation to be named, I remembered those conversations and the Free Land of Sane Outcasts was born.
Adjacent to Belarus
30-12-2005, 00:40
Over the years in middle school, I mispronounced several words and said otherwise stupid things while with my friends, and they, of course, took note and loved to tease me about them. One of them compiled all of them into a single phrase, which was "The 10 cubic ton angry dirt surfed the wavs! See it adjacent to Belarus if you're omnipotent." So technically, "Adjacent to Belarus" is pronounced A-jah-cent to Bel-air-us, with the stresses on the first syllable of adjacent and the second of Belarus. :)
Grainne Ni Malley
30-12-2005, 00:43
I attempted to log into my nation that had been inactive for a couple of months and couldn't so I decided to make a new one. I tried Marcania, but it was already taken. After trying a few other names that were reserved, I got frustrated, picked up the book Celtic Myth & Magick by Edain McCoy that was sitting next to my computer and skimmed through its list of Celtic Godesses and Heroines. I came across "Grainne Ni Malley", a pirate queen. The book suggested that calling on her is supposed to aid you in serving your country and I figured that it was appropriate enough for NS.
Kaykami
30-12-2005, 00:47

I ALWAYS highlight when I read!:p
Kaykami
30-12-2005, 00:49

Briantonnia
30-12-2005, 00:55
I play Warhammer (tabletop miniatures wargame - toy soldiers basically). One of the armies is called the Bretonnians, from the land of Bretonnia. They're sort of Arthurian knights with a French veneer. Anyway, I have a Bret army and some of my mates began calling them Briantonnians ( chop off the 'Bret' replace it with my name)... Sad, but true.

damn you!i have been wondering about your name for some time, and it is you who won't give an explanation?

secondly..

my name's a rather nerdish creation, and it is only by an accident that this became my "forum nation".

i actually started playing NS while still in highschool, later forgot about that nation, and only remembered NS when doing a projecty thingy at uni. and for that project, i created a new nation, naming it SoWiBi (SoWi is uni abbreviation for my course of study (sozialwissenschaften=social sciences), and Bi is what goes on my town's license plates (Bielefeld)). so yeah.
Ruloah
30-12-2005, 00:57
Ruloah=a planet I created, out in the galactic halo, orbiting the star Ruhn, home of the Warriors of the First Circle, trained by Rulan, First of the Inner Council, to defend the galaxy against the Four Sides of Darkness, also known as the Dark Lords of The Outer Darkness.

gropney=my currency, from a story I made up to tell my youngest brother when I was trying to put him to sleep, about a village whose name was the same as its currency, which always made for some confusion...

too much time on my hands as an insane teenager...

As for me, I couldn't think of anything and finally just picked something to go with my nation title of "The Nomadic Peoples of...". Thought I was being funny  .

Bielefeld, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bielefeld-Verschw%C3%B6rung) eh. So you are one of them? Now where is my tinfoil hat...

How did I come up with my nation's name? I guess that's obvious. Lazy is in "Lazy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazy)" and Otakus as in "Otaku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku)"

That's what he said: (something like 3rd post) but did anybody notice the secret white message (now grey) that he posted with it? I dunno, just I have a habit of highlighting messages as I read them.

My nation's name just came to me, although I think it was based on Armenia. I just had to put an 'ia' at the end of it, as it's used by several actual countries (eg India, Mongolia, Latvia, Estonia etc.) I wanted it to be a peaceful nation but I hadn't even noticed the link to 'arms' in the title! I also wanted it to be a bit mysterious, hence 'ar' (our) 'mistri' (mystery).

Actually this is the first time I met someone who claims to be from Bielefeld online, so I just couldn't resist. Must be pretty annoying to hear that joke again and again, I guess.

I'm from Erlangen in beautiful Franconia.

[NS]Fergi America
30-12-2005, 13:49
I got the inspiration for mine from the name "Saudi Arabia." I had never cared about Saudi Arabia itself, but when I read that it's actually named after some guy called Saud, I've wanted to put my name on a country ever since.

So when I found this game, it was easy enough to make that a somewhat-reality. Deserts aren't appealing to me, and I'm not an Arab, either, so I got rid of the "Arabia" part and replaced it with "America."

So: Ferg (first part of my last name) + i + America.

I founded the Nation during that last glitch (something about the hard drive filling up)...and when I could get on again, the [NS] appeared in front of my forum name. But it's not part of the actual nation name.

Shame on you - but then again, what'd I expect from someone who claims to be from "Bielefeld". http://www.realitynet.nl/images/er/funstuff/turbonoface.gif

Back to the topic!
My nation's name "German Nightmare" has an 11 year history. My US soccer coach in highschool started to call me that when he wanted me to get on the field.
Soon the whole team referred to me me as "the German nightmare" to awe the opposite teams.
What I lacked in skillz I made up in bravado and readiness to make sacrifices and take one for the team. Aah, good times! Besides, nothing beats talking shit about their moms to someone who doesn't speak German but knows exactly what you're talking about :D
Anyway, they all expected me to be the soccer god (coming from Germany and all) - little did they know that my expertise ranged only form backyard amateur over street soccer semipro to television and stadium pro :p

There, that's the story. Now I'm the German Nightmare, forever and ever.

(Right now I'm) feeling stupid, feeling small. And I see myself as a concealed attraction.
I'm probably one of the youngest, if not THE youngest, kids to actually WILLINGLY go to a Björn Again concert. I wanted to watch that scene.

So... I won't lay all my love on this post, because I see every (other post) a potential threat...

Anyway, I created my nation last year, when I had what you might call a trivial occupation (school), and my explanation of the name is that: it was lunchtime, and I didn't have much time or space for witty name creation. So, I thought: that I pride myself on being random, and like the word and the flexibility of it (for example answering the question "Why was ABBA successful in the late 70s with "Because they randomly succeeded") and tried to use something like Random Land or Random Nation, but that was used, so I used the fact that I live in the UK to give Kingdom. (Which is a total misnomer because RK has never had a king.) Two for the price of one!

I retcon it ICly to being this: There was something in the air that night when RK was founded, and the name originated from a joking response from one of the settlers to the question "What should we call this fine nation" The settler responded lazily, "Uhh... random kingdom?" and the name stuck.

Ah well... If I created my nation now I would call it Arasia. (Based on a character of a story I wrote earlier this year for school (It sucked in every possible way, and reeked of a 13 year old with problems, which is what I actually am) with a suffix, and because it sounds like that cool band Erasure.
Who released an EP of ABBA covers called ABBA-esque.

And I feel I'm cracking up because my nation's name sucks...

And now... to start a new trend of quotation: cheesy 80s pop songs.
So... now you've got my number, and the alias that I've been living under.

which beam has blinded you?

The origins of my country's name is the result of a personal running gag that all started with the Nali War Cow (http://www.planetunreal.com/identitycrisis/skins/ut/skinpacks/rt/pack2/rt-memecow-ingame.jpg) from Unreal Tournament. Somehow, I identified with the idea and started off running around under the name of "CowPie". As time went on, the cow pie idea kept surfacing, just because it sounded inocuous, but just wrong. The term "pasture pastry" I had first heard in a story by Utah Phillips. (http://www.utahphillips.org/stuff/mooseturdpie.mp3)

Oh, if anyone's interested, here's the flag (http://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/uploads/pasturepastry.jpg) for The Eternal Fields of PasturePastry.
