What is your favourite national anthem? I love the melody of "Auferstanden aus Ruinen", the anthem of the former German Democratic Republic, for some reason.

The Italians have a tune you can dance to. Which is nice.
Though of course the best National Anthem is the one by Radiohead.

I find it funny Auferstanden aus Ruinen mentions a "united fatherland."

Yes, and because this you could not risk to sing it in Eastern Germany.
In my eyes it's a nice anthem, too, but I prefer the actual one of Germany ;-) Other nice anthems are the ones from Great Britain, Austria and Italy. Who likes more the fast ones with temperament will like all from South America.
Sorry to people from the U.S., but yours is almost the only one I really don't like... oh, and the one of France.

"God Save the Queen" is the best national anthem, but just the one by the Sex Pistols.

Are you insane???? The British National Anthem is rubbish. It has nothing to do with the country and started out as some Music Hall song that a king happened to like. Fact. Any other song in existance is better
The German one is my personal favourite, with the French one coming close second.

I prefer the anthems of Russia or Brazil.

Well, the Danish one is very pretty and I like the german one.
But the Russian national anthem is a bit too *heavy* for me

I like the Canadian Anthem and the Polish Anthem
"O Canada" gets me every time, though I've no links with it. And the French anthem is also majorly hum-able.

No, I'm not insane, as much as I know... ;-)
I understood this discussion that it's only about music. I have no idea, for example, about the text of the Italian anthem.
The British anthem is a typical example for an anthem common in 19. century - with melody like a choral, not like in Italian opera (;-)), with the monarch in the centrum. If a monarch plays a big role in society it's justified in my eyes.

I like the french and the American ones. They're simply good tunes, unlike our miserable dirge (Britain).

How else was I going to type it out? :D
I like Russia's the most. Their new one, which is actually the old Soviet Union one, but with new lyrics.
I'm not really that big on national anthems, though the Internationale was cool.
The German anthem (the full one, not the butchered third verse one); I also like the Soviet anthem.

I do not like the Brittish anthem one bit, but the Brazilian one is tres cool.
The Hymn of The Soviet Union (prior to destalinisation) is prety awesome.

"Destalinization"? Sounds almost like they took the salt out of the country or something. :D
My favorite, obviously, has to be Oh Canada (http://www.xav.com/scripts/search/test/binaries/Oh_Canada.mp3.html) (a vocal rendition), followed closely by the Anthem of the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen. :D
It's kinda too bad the Australians didn't choose 'Waltzing Matilda' as their national anthem. That would have to be one of the weirdest (in a good way!) anthems ever. :)

Austalian, Welsh or CAnadian anthems
I'm Australian, but O Canada and The Land Of Our Fathers kick ass.

I, of course, have to go with the US National Anthem.
I mean, it fits perfectly. The song is about a battle. How much more dead on can you get?

The United States' national anthem is funny because the tune is an Irish drinking song. I like it because it's mine, but other than that, I also like "O Canada!"

My favourite National Anthem is Bangladesh's "Amar Shuna Bangla" (my golden Bengal). It has great lyrics and a good tune, it's quite patriotic but peaceful and was written by a Nobel prize winning poet!
Beat that!

The French National anthem is quite good but only because of the Monty Python's 'Man with a tape recorder up his nose' and then again there's the hilarious extreme french accent you can sing it in.
Allons enfants de la Patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivé
sing that in the funniest french accent you can do and you'll see what I mean
Even though I'm American, I must say that I dislike our anthem (except when instrumental and played by the Capitol Regiment drum corps or sung by the Mormon Tabernacle choir; the chords, the chords!). One thing is that it is impossible to sing... it requires at least 1.5 octaves of range, something that most people don't have. "America the Beautiful" would have been a much better choice - besides, an "anthem" is somewhat like a mission statement, isn't it? "The Star-Spangled Banner" doesn't get into anything besides the Battle of Fort McHenry until the 4th verse, and, really, in a land supposedly renowned for freedom, I would rather have "brotherhood from sea to shining sea" than "the rockets' red glare."
By the way, has anyone heard Qatar's anthem? It's half percussion and rather funny... let alone the fact that it has no words and only 11 measures...

My four favorites are L'Internationale (which really doesn't count), La Marseillaise (France), O Canada, and The Star Spangled Banner, though I agree that it is really hard to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

The Italian one is very upbeat and I like it. The German, French and Russian anthems are also good (I haven't heard the DDR's, but I'd like to now) although my absolute favourite is...
King Danny of an As-Yet Unnamed Country's national anthem (http://www.citizensrequired.com).

You should listen to it performed by Mireille Mathieu. She emphasizes every rolling R to the extreme.
"Il Canto degli Italiani"
I think it is bella.
"Fratelli d'Italia
L'Italia s'è desta,
Dell'elmo di Scipio
S'è cinta la testa.
Dov'è la Vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
Ché schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò. "
The British National Anthem is a dirge, I can admit it - we should have a decent one like Rule Brittania or British Grenadiers
Eddy Izzard's version of God save the queen tickles me, it has to be my favourite! :)

The French have a cool one... it has really bloody lryics. Funny it must be about their own people getting killed since we ARE talking about the french.

Bella is Italian for Beautiful. Considering I'm a born & raised Italian, I'd think I would understand my own language. Although, thank you anyways.
