It was my first ever time driving. 2 years ago, when I was 13....

...There's this little 200ft dirt road behind our house. Dad let me drive his rented Tahoe on the road while he was in the passenger seat.

I wasted no time. :D 70 mph. Scared the crap out of him. ;)

I will say, that same Camaro, I was going accross the state, early one morning, and a little sporty car (looked like a porsche but I don't think it was) pulled along side of me, I gunned it, was going about 95, and the little sporty car went by me so quick it looked as if my car was sitting still. I tried to not race anybody after that embarrassment.

I just realised that I was going stupidly fast downhill on a really big hill and started to wonder how fast I could get it going if I actually gave it some welly, by which point the slope had levelled out and started back up hill again. I guess the wind behind me helped as well.

As I say, not clever.

Fastest I've ever driven, or the fastest I've ever been clocked at, or the highest over the speed limit I"ve been clocked at?

All three are seperate instances...fastest is probably around 110-115 in a 95 Maxima...fastest clocked was around 93/94 in my 96 GMC Sierra (nothin like hearing your speed being called out over the CB to make you slow down a bit and look for the cops - no ticket though) and the biggest ticket was 30 over (85 in a 55 - not on my record though...)

112mph on a supped up 82' Kawasaki 550KZ, I was playing follow the leader with two friends on deserted back road one summer evening, they were on an old Norton 850 Commando in pristine shape and and the other was on a Honda 750 something or another...

Don't know how fast in a car. It was in a green 69 Oldsmobile 88 with a 455 four-barral carburetor and dual exhaust though, I was driving down those same roads and wanted to see how fast it would go by myself, middle of the night... got about 110 (or above?) and ran out of room...

Then I grew up and stopped doing stupid shit like that.

Had a 68 Mercury Montery with a 390 that I hit triple digits with on literally a daily basis when I used it to commute with during the early morning hours. I took a V-10 dodge pickup to 110 before with no problem. In fact I've probably topped 100 in about a dozen different cars over the years.

But the fastest I have ever went was when I pegged the speedo in a 68 T-bird with a 429 on highway 50.

Speedometer maxed at 120, I think I pushed it a little faster.

I did 100+ in my '77 Chevy Malibu Classic. The speedometer only went to 100mph and the needle was bouncing off the end pretty hard (and the car was still pulling). The officer that pulled me over wasn't able to catch up with me until I was setting up for a 100 degree turn up hill and hit me at 85. He thought I was running, I just didn't see him way back there.

105 mph in my 914 racing a pick-up from Long Beach to SF on the Pacific Highway. He would trounce me on the flats and I would pass him again when we hit the twisties and the hills. I would guess that he was passing me at @130 on the flats.

115 in an enduro kart at Sears Point Raceway (Infenion). Lost badly because I had a brake leak and had to pit (even enduro karts don't pit-so if you do your race is pretty much over). The only thing that really makes that impressive is that in an enduro kart you lay flat on your back and look through your feet to drive.

Tpppt! My little Saturn will do 110 MPH with no problem at all and with plenty of throtttle left and RPM's left before redline.

Problem is it needs an aftermarket computer because the stupid thing will cut the fuel off to the engine if you go over 110 mph.

If it weren't for that it would do 130 MPH + no problem.

Mind, he was heading between Sydney and Canberra, I believe, and needed to be there fast.

I tend to agree. Cars of the early 1950's had such lousy handling and whatever road glue they did have was due to the vehicles hulking weight.

But would 170 MPH on a Suzuki Katana GS 1100 SZ motorcycle be more impressive?

ok, have been at 287kph on the calder racetrack in my mate's fathers (who was driving) XJS Jaguar which he had customised a lot.
done 180kph on the freeway, the day before they turned the fixed speed cameras on there... (had to do it once, right?)

and when i visited the USA was clocked by highway patrol doing 100-104 3 times (California, Nevada and California again (different cop) and got away each time with the truth - namely the speed limit is 100 in Australia :-) (put on a strong accent, be polite and bemused they pulled you over and they just let you go with a warning - that was in a rental.

ps there is no need to mention to a cop that the rest of the world used kph, right? he should know that, right? :-)

I was clocked @ 168 MPH in a loaned Ferrari Daytona @ the Bonneville Flats in Nevada.
I didn't have the gumption to push a borrowed exotic all the way. The owner (someone with oh, 30 years more driving experience than myself) had pushed it to 176.5 (just a half-mile under the cars published top speed) just a couple hours earleir (same venue) To me, 168 MPH felt like "Oh my God, I'm the tinniest little error away from a quick flaming death" If you really want to wind out your car to the max, I strongly encourage you (if you're in North America) to go to the Bonneville Flats in Nevada and rent some time (go as group with other car nut friends if you can) The rush of the speed and the entire experience more than makes up for the ding to bank account and the effort of organizing it (paperwork, paperwork, connections, paperwork, getting there, more paperwork)

I've gotten my own a car (1969 Fiat Dino) up to 115ish a few times on the highway, at 4 :30 am on sunday, with lnearly no other cars on the road. Don't do that anymore. I just go to the track and indulge my need for speed in a safe environment. On the track, when its running excellently, I've gotten my car up to 126 MPH, but only for a few seconds.

I cruised at around 110mph for about an hour, LATE one night on the interstate in western Virginia...

No one was on the road...

I started to drift just a bit...

My co-pilot nudged me just in time for me to slow it down to 85 as we passed a cop who was driving in the other lane.

The fact that at the time I had bright yellow hair didn't help my efforts to avoid the inevitable ticket. I'm just glad he could only clock me at 85!

But the fastest I have ever went was when I pegged the speedo in a 68 T-bird with a 429 on highway 50.

Speedometer maxed at 120, I think I pushed it a little faster.

I'm listening the the Beach Boys "Fun, Fun, Fun" as I read that. lol

The fastests I've ever gone was bout 110 in a '71 340 Duster. Fast little car... I'm only 14, bu I was the passenger. I can drive, though.

How the hell did you flip a Miata? The center of gravity is so low you'd break the co-efficient of friction before you achieved rotational force.....Unless of course you left the pavement...
Oh, I certainly left the pavement, no question about it. What happened was I was going over a hill, trying to catch a jump [which I had done before and thought I could do again]. While airborne, the wheel was apparently juerked to my left, and then I flew off the embankment and into a field. To be honest, I have no idea how the hell I managed to flip over, since I distinctly remember still being parallel to the ground as I left the roadway. Next thing I know I'm upside down in mud and what smelled like sewer runoff.

I'm only 17 and therefore havent really had the chance to go that fast on any tracks or anythign yet :(

Although on the way back from a gig at about 1 o clock in the morning when I was very angry 'cos I was lost (never go to Nottingham, it has the worst directions ever, I'm never goin there again not even for the best gig in the world) I did about 120MPH in my dads BMW, aint anything that special really, you dont really feel speed in relatively new cars...90 in an old Corsa is a different matter though

edit: Pure Metal, I was talking about my mums Corsa, which is old, meant to mention that doing 30 less than a BMW in an old Corsa is a different experience when you're driving

Somewhere around 220 km/hr (140 mph) in an RX-7 (series 4) I used to own. I say 'somewhere' cause the speedo only went up to 180 but the hand kept swinging round til it hit the '0' again, and I figured it was about another 40 km/hr. RPMs were only 5500 so it had plenty of grunt left, but it did start to wobble a bit so I slowed down. I suddenly realised at that speed any sort of trouble, no matter how minor, would spell 'death' to me. You don't walk away from a crash at 220.

One of the main reasons I got rid of the car - the speed was getting too addictive. That, the cost of petrol (they guzzle gas like V8s) and getting stopped by the police for doing 142k in a 100k zone and managing to talk my way out of it. I figured the next time I wouldn't be so lucky. I didn't like the idea of loss of licence and a huge fine.

170km/h (105mph) in a 76 Corolla 1.6L4, was heading to a job alongside my bos in his 60's Mustang. he backed off at 160 as his front end was chattering.

Over 190km/h (120mph) in my 81 Celica GT 2.4L4, spedo ends at 140km/h but was catching up to my wife who was thundering along in my parents Cressida. She was donig over 180 and I was closing easily better than 10km/h. This is same car that when I showed it to my mom, she wanted to drive it and on a deserted highway she popped it up to 135 without batting an eye.... gues the lead foot is hereditary. :)

Also got a MR2 up to 80km/h in the dealer's lot on a pre test drive. Had a squeak in the suspension so, I didn't bother with a road test. The salesman had alrady turned white just watching me.

The story is very closely related to the craziest driving I've done.
The first time I visited Arizona was in Phoenix with my high school's marching band, and one night I was with some friends and we were crossing the street and nearly got hit by someone who ran the red the light and blasted through at some godless speed. Those of us that ran back to the side of the road we started at started crossing at that crosswalk again and the police who chasing the other car stopped and ticketed us for jaywalking o_O
The first time I drove through Arizona was years later on my way to a family reunion and I got pulled over my a cop and given a written warning because apparently driving 75 mph in a 75 mph zone is driving too slow.
Between the two incidents, I lost all respect for authority in Arizona. The few times I've been in Arizona since then I've done as I damn well please. I didn't bother stopping at stop signs or red lights, and I drove at my fastest speed of 140 mph. Interestingly enough, I drove past half a dozen cop cars and none of them bothered to stop me. Lesson learned - in Arizona you're only in trouble if you break the law.
Maybe next time I won't even pay when I stop for gas... hell, in that state I'll probably be made chief of the highway patrol...

I just put new tyres and struts on my '95 mercury Tracer/Ford Escort Wagon.
88hp 1.9L engine. As it had a bad vibration before the tyres/struts I thought I'd see whether or not it came back. I found out that while the accelleration curve isn't good, that little car will climb to 110 mph quite nicely - It likes 65-70 (2500 RPM) though and gets 35mpg when I keep it there.

The fastest I've ever been on a motot vehicle was on a new 1985 Yamaha V-Max 1100. 0-120mph faster than I could look down on the speedo.
I let off the gas at 137(ish)mph (looong-flat Wyoming road :D ). IIRC a Vmax can hit 151+mph, but I'm not that brave/stupid.

Odd! That's what I drive but the coupe model. You just didn't press the throttle long (or correctly) enough. Those cars have very high gear ratios so they can scream on a highway.

Get up to 70 in high traffic outside of Chicago? Sure, they can go fast, but it takes a really long time to get it up to that speed. :p

Fastest I ever went was 125MPH in a Mini Cooper when I lived in Germany. However, I would generally cruise around at 95-105, so it was a bit of a challenge to re-adjust to moving back to the States. Especially when I still had the Mini, because it's so easy to go 90 and not realize it. I miss that car.

For those who say they've never gone more than 50 or 60, are you not required to drive on the freeway in drivers training?

Oddly enough, that's where I had my high speed experience: going down the highway in Arizona in a rented Kia Sephia. I wasn't even trying. I just looked down and it was going 110 mph.

115 mph/185 kmh (sustained) on the Bluegrass/Wendell Ford Parkways in Kentucky (last year). I drove from Lexington to Fulton in 2 1/2 hours.

Long trip: Austin to El Paso (602 miles) in 6 hours, 15 minutes (including a stop in Fort Stockton to refuel). That came out to 100mph/160 kmh.

Short burst: about 130 mph/210 kmh outside of West, TX. (A large multi-vortex tornado was approaching rapidly and I decided to get the hell out of Dodge!)

As passenger:
145 mph/230 kmh from Martinsville to Bloomington, IN. We made the trip (20 miles) in about seven minutes.

105 mph in a 1979 Pontiac Phoenix and the same speed in a 1984 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE. The big difference that counts is that the Pontiac did it on the interstate outside Albequerque, New Mexico in the middle of the night on a straight stretch and the Mazda did it on Scenic Highway 7 between Russelville and Hot Springs Arkansas at noon as I went through traffic, the Ozarks and the Ouachita National Forest in a hurry to make post time at the horse races. :)

I don't live there, so it was a once-off for me. Flat road, bugger all traffic, excellent visibility. A chance to see what the car could do. Felt pretty flat & stable at that speed too.
