I like the corporate modern hall type of church. With people comfort in mind (not those damn phews), nice chairs, good soundsystem & great fire escape (Hah).

Rather than the old ancient daunting looking cathedrals!

No point having a church where it looks great, but can't fill it up with people, and eventually becomes a museum/casino/bar.

Although a non-believer, I have visited many houses of worship just to see the genius of the human race. I couldn't tell you which I find the most beautiful, but I found these most impressive:

Without a doubt, do not miss the cathedrals of Aachen, Worms, Speyer, Mainz (all Romanesque), those of Paris, Chartres, Reims, Amiens, Bourges, Köln, Ulm, Vienna, Prag, etc. (all Gothic)! You should also visit churches. I was impressed by Paray-le-Monial, St-Philibert de Tournus, Wieskirche, Ettal, Melk, Zwiefalten, Sv. Jan na Skalice (Prag), St. Miklas (Mala Strana-Prag), Karlskirche (Vienna), etc. It's a very long list!

I have an enormous list of churches to visit Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Scandinavia, Benelux, Baltic countries, Russia, etc. but they must wait until I can find some money to travel again. Donations will be gratefully accepted! ;)

You wouldn't happen to know who made that Pieta, would you?
Unfortunately, as Chartres Cathedral was originally constructed around 1000-1100, and then rebuilt after a fire has destroyed some of it around 1200, I'm pretty sure no one knows who created either the pietas, high reliefs outside along the portal, or low reliefs inside, as well as the famous rose windows and architecture of the cathedral itself.

For those that have never seen the cathedral or pieta, here are some pictures from my own personal collection.

Personally I think all Gothic Cathedrals look the same, and those modern glass box churches are just too bland for me. Give me the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona. That Gaudi had the best ideas about Architecture, if he was still alive and I had alot of money, he would be the one to design my house, no question.

That scultor is about Mary's ascension. In Piéta Mary would hold the dead body of Christ.
Anyway that was cleared already. I remember that there should have been 8 towers in Chartres Cathedral. Do you know why there's only two. I know the other one is newer than the other. Lack of money? Impossible architecture?
