I just got a signed copy of Jennifer government from Max himself. For those of you who read his blog, I was interviewed a while ago under my real name, Ellis. Anyway, thought I should just bounce with joy.... :D

JG was an entertaining novel but not as good as Naked lunch as film. Anyway a picture of Keru's boob would beat 'em both... :D

Not the same as the book. The movie is a take on the life of William Burroughs ... the book is not.

I want to read Jennifer Government, it sounds very similar to a couple of short stories I've written about dystopian America in the not-too-distant future.

Its a really nifty book, I read it and syrup, both in the same world of economics, but both so different in plot, I loved them both.

The book is phenominal. Although ... it's in Burroughs special DaDa style. Takes some getting used to. If you're going to tackle Burroughs, I suggest starting with "The Soft Machine". It's a bit easier on the brain of the uninitiated.
The book isn't that good. It's a superficial attempt at dystopian literature, and a bad one at that. For example, the book seems to indicate that Mr. Barry's view on government differences between libertarian and totalitarian are blackwhite, and have very little in between. The situation in Jennifer Government is completely unrealistic as well.

unrealistic dystopian book and that's bad (well, Isn't that good)
How many realistic utopians have you read?
Just a thought. The unrealistic enviroment never bothered me in JG

The idea of people being named after companies was pretty lame to me. Jennifer Government never really revealed anything more about dystopias beyond basic masterpieces like 1984, BNW, and We.
An Orwellian society is quite possible. The mechanisms are possible. Of course, a three-way superstate power-foundation between an Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia requires some unification in the right order in the first place. But Jennifer Government just wasn't written well. It just came across as dull, non-revealing, and superficial. If it's your cup of tea, by all means drink it.

ok, that cleared it a lot more. I'm not a fan but I would recommend it as an easy weekend read. Of course it's not 1984 but it was exactly what I expected. Same league as Da Vinci Code

*Shrugs* J.G. would certainly be something recommendable if someone had never read dytopian literature before. But it is definitely not among the best.

I agree on that. If you have read Eco you won't praise the writer of Da Vinci Code (see -can't even remember the name) but it's a decent read if your expectations are non-existant
