this isn't normal, is it?

ok, for a long time now - many years - i've had this weird thing with my right ear. certain frequencies (bass especially) can cause this really weird sensation in the ear itself, but which also travels down into the exact same spot every time and manifests itself as a really annoying sort of background pain just where my right kidney is. as i said certain frequencies that bring it on, but its aided by either being tired (nearly always get it then) or listening to music through headphones (if not - through speakers - it has to be very loud, see). once it comes on i can't get it out of my head and it doesn't go away till the music does, and it becomes increasingly annoying.

now, this isn't normal, right?

the really annoying thing is that i also have mild tinitus (constant ringing of the ears from too much loud noise - i blame my old band  ) and recently this ringing has been getting intense enough to cause the weird ear thing and spark off the odd pain, meaning badass lack of sleep (as i can't turn it off!)

again, not normal :(

i went to the doctor about it and she just looked at me like "WTF?!" :p

so i'm wondering a) what the explaination might be, b) if anybody else has ever had anything similar, and c) what a (possibly non-medical) solution might be...

the only reason i can give is some particular neurons in my old noggin might, for some reason, not be mylenated (have a coating of fatty stuff on basically like insulator round electric wire) and nerve signals might be getting crossed. which is needless to say, fucking weird :headbang:

The vagus nerve? It has some fibres reaching the kidneys... but it reahes almost everything.
The phrenic nerve... it reaches the diaphragm, and it has sensory fibres there.

could be either... god knows. the doc (this was a couple of months back) kinda dismissed the idea though.
of course she didn't have an alternative explaination to offer...

Well, me being such a talent in the human body as I am, I can tell you that I am real bad at biology. All I can offer is a few words of comfort someone told me before:

"Everything is normal, some things only for one person."

This is (sorta) similar to the sensation I feel when I pull on my belly button - I feel as if my eyes are being pushed inwards too. Yay for fucked up nervous systems!

Hell, I don't know. If a trained doctor doesn't have a clue, I'll be damned if I do.

You might have a Tumour like John Travlota in Phenomonen.

IF you start predicting the future be afraid.

I actually sometimes get hit somewhere but actually feel the pain elsewhere.

Its weird.

Could be something like synesthesia or kinda like it's a trigger for an epileptic seizure, or in this case kidney pain.

You’ve been probed, and the aliens have inserted a listening device that slowly grew up to your ear. The pain you feel is the transmitter relaying what you are hearing. Normally, you don’t feel anything, but the aliens don’t like bass so they kind of give a little pain to slowly wean you off of it, so they don’t have to listen to it anymore. The reason a lack of sleep brings it on is because your sub-conscious still remembers the traumatic probing that was wiped from your memory, and the aliens don’t want you to remember it in your sleep. The only cure is to shave off all of your hair everywhere on your body. The hairs are being used as self-sustaining power generators for the listening device. Also, start wearing a tinfoil hat. Aliens hate tin foil hats.

Erm, you said it was like, certain frequencies or Pitches, or whatever right? Well, I don't know if it was ever proved, but the Brown Noise theory, (you know, that a single musical sound can make your bowels move) sounds similar...Maybe you have sensitive hearing and are just experiencing something like that, that the rest of us normal people can't get?

Go to the doctor again, and if they give you weird looks, ask to be reffered to an ear specialist.

I have a sure-fire remedy. Works for me every time.

Run around in a circle (a very small one) for 10 minutes, play a mind numbing video game like one that requires no thought (i.e. space invaders or bejeweled) for the next 10 minutes and finally drink a glass of warm milk with vanilla, cinammon and a pinch of icing sugar. Then lie out on your bed and relax every single muscle one at a time starting from your toes upwards. Do not move on to another muscle group till the ones before have been wholly relaxed.

If absolutely nothing else this should put you to sleep....though you may want to skip the running around part. That was just cause I thought it would look funny. Someone running in circles in their living room or something.

i was in an exam a while ago and about quarter of the way through i started hearing this really high pitched 'eeeee' sound. no-one else seemed to have noticed it so either they couldn't detect it or it was just another noise from my head. anyway, it was very annoying.
One more thing! if i try and talk in a wierd accent or strangely pitched voice the end of my nose really hurts - enough to make my eyes water

I've had weird perception problems too. About two years ago I'd have this feeling when I turned my eyes rapidly in one direction, like the whole world behind me was spinning in the opposite direction about my head. It lasted for six months off and on and then disappeared. Also every few weeks I'd feel a sort of a pinging sound in the front of my head.

Man I'm glad those symptoms are gone. It's hard to tell how many other people out there have quirky problems like that. I'm sure many who do don't want to tell other people about it.

Maybe an alien has injected itself into you and is living off your soul. But certain frequencys hurt it, so it squirms around in your kidney. That is the most logical explanation I can come up with. Contact your local alien hunter or phone Sigourney Weaver she has had practise with these things. The image below will soon happen too you as the frequency gets louder.

I would make an appt with an otolaryngologist (head/neck specialist) or at the very least an auditory/inner ear specialist.

If you HAVE been diagnosed with tinnitus, then you might have a check up with your physician to get your blood pressure checked and to do a follow up, to make sure its not hyperacusis (although to ME it doesn't sound like it is hyperacusis, but I haven't taken to many otolaryngology courses :) )

I used to get it, the annoying thing is, it's mental association for me.... the noise is entirely imaginary, but I can get rid of it by not thinking about it. Unfortunately not thinking about it involves thinking about it, but I managed to get rid of it somehow. Maybe, since your thoughts wonder onto it, you get the noise no matter what? For a while, the noise of silence, as it were, became quite deafening, and really sore in my head.

(I only figured that it was imaginary when I found I could alter the frequency of it, as it were.)

If you want to sleep, take two Benedryl or Original Formula Dramamine. Both knock you out. Or you can get a perscription.

I sometimes get a high pitched noise in my ear, but I just disregard it and turn the volume up.
