Correct me if I am wrong please, I thought the Governor General of Canada was still apointed by the UK and is pretty much a cerimonal post to tie Canada in with the Comonwealth.

Does a governor-general really need to be qualified? Isn't it an outdated royal post, with little real power? Or am I thinking of the wrong position here.

No, the position is not outdated but the responsibilities of the job are far less critical than they were in the past.

The combination of hair and shoddy shirt buttoning lends to a sense that she was woken up five minutes before the shot. The smile implies an overbite (though that may just be my own sleep deprivation and her use of the half smile that shows only the top row). Finally, the black dress on black chair look makes her come off as some sort of Bond villain.

The Governor-General is appointed by the Prime Minister, and is the ceremonial Head of State, acting in the role of and on behalf of the Monarchy. Queen Elizabeth is our actual Head of State, but allows the Governor -General to act on her behalf in her absence.

The queen's representative to essentially sit in for her role as Queen of Canada.
I think Michealle Jean will be a capable GG, but that she was chosen for the absolutely wrong reasons. I don't think that someone should be made "better" by the colour of their skin and their ancestry, and especially by their gender. Capable as she is, it strikes me that she was mainly chosen for those aspects. That being said, her husband has the tinge of seperatism on him, and the Liberals seem to have a fetish for such people. Though they may be "accepted" by some in Canada, the Governor-General is no place for someone with such ties, for the GG embodies everything that seperatism is not.

She's basically a CBC celebrity, and, as my sister pointed out to me, if Canadians are going to start appointing celebrities to political posts we can surely do much better than a documentary film maker no one has heard of. How about appointing Colin Mochrie, of Whose Line Is It Anyway Fame? He's just as much a self made immigrant as Jean, and he'd be great at thinking on his feet, what with all his years of experience in improve comedy. Or what about The Daily Show's Samantha Bee? She's Canadian, and she probably knows more about politics than some of our MPs. Rick Mercer might also be a good choice; he'd add a little sarcasm to an otherwise boring political position.

Belinda! Ha ha ha... I must say she's good looking, although moving from the Cons to the big-L party is really only a marginal improvement. Just imagine if she managed to take control of the party and become PM... Our constitutional/practical head-of-state team would definitely win any international beauty contest... Sorry Tony... *Descends into laughter*
But anyway, we are discussing Madame Jean here.
I think she will do fine in the role. It seems a little bit uncreative to have a second GG who is a minority female immigrant who became famous as a CBC reporter; but since we need more females, minorities, immigrants, and youth involved in politics I guess it is not a very strong argument. Still, Martin could have had a bit more imagination.
Personally, I hope we get an Acadian or Metis next time we're up for a Francophone Governor-General.
Did anyone else kinda wish that we had picked Romeo Dallaire? (I know, not an Acadian, but still... It's Dallaire) I think he would have been a great choice. He's heroic, he knows our politics inside-out, he's bilingual, and he is known the world over. I know it would not have been politically expedient to appoint him, but still, I am a bit regretful.
Just so you know, I picked "good choice" for the poll.

I would have prefered to see Romeo Dallaire as the new GG. Hes got very good qualifications, and could really do alot for this country. This new one seems a little to weak to me. I consider myself a leftist/liberal in my beliefs EXCEPT for military spending. Jean accepted her appointment at a press conference Thursday and pledged to make the rights of women, youth, aboriginals and the disadvantaged a priority.
