My mind's completely gone to pot!(so to speak) I'm almost completely lacking in a short-term memory, I can't concentrate at all and my mind is completely blank. This is me all the time without the aid of intoxicants. Is anyone else like this?

Ummmm, no. The only time my short-term memory is ever impaired is when I'm stoned, not the other way around. Sounds like you need to lay off for a while. I've never experienced any problems with memory or focus when I'm not high, even when I've gotten high ever other hour for a week or two (like scoring an ounce or two).

Thyroid disease is a possible cause of trouble forming new memories. A friend was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism after having a lot of trouble at school because of its symptoms. Fortunately, hypothyroidism is usually easy to treat by regularly taking synthesized thyroid hormone in pill form. It's also easy to detect, at least in the later stages, because a blood test will reveal abnormal amounts of the hormone TSH.

Blood tests are a good thing to have done regularly anyway because they'll also find problems like high cholesterol before the really serious symptoms manifest.

no... my problem doesn't come from anything like that. i'm a blood donor and get my blood tested regulary. nothing's wrong.... well at least physichally.

..... uhh... either the government is brain-washing me, the early stage of alzheimer's is setting in or i'm watching too much tv and alcohol has killed off most of my brain cells

I was strung out on Morphine for 6 years, and consumed a huge amount of other drugs for years preceding that. Initially, when I stopped, my short term memory and even my problem solving skills went down the tube. (I didn't have the problem when I was actually on the drugs...and no it wasn't that I was just to high to notice) I was worried it was permanent, but after about a year it all came back. So I know from experience how much it sucks, and how frightening your problem can be.

If you've spontaneously started experiencing memory problems, I'd strongly suggest getting some tests done to see if there is something causing this problem, especially since there is a good chance something can be done about.

Good luck, I hope you can get over this problem.

So, I'm not the only one who currently has no short-term memory?

Phew. I thought I was becoming abnormal :p.

I have quite a few of the same problems you do...I don't understand it either.

The closest thing to drugs I've ever gotten is a perscription nasal spray when I had an upper respiratory tract infection, and a nil on alcohol...you may want to look other places for sources of problems...could be pyschological...

Fair play to you and I hope that things are going well for you now. You have my respect for coming through this.

I have the same problem too. For example, there have literally been times where I would get up to relieve my bladder. Halfway there, I forget why I have gotten up, and just go get a Coke or something. I don't take any form of drugs, and I despise taking pills of all form, including supplements. Physically, I don't really have any issues, and am well in shape. So I guess the only explanation I have is shitty sleep and extra-shitty eating habits.

I get hit in the head a lot. (Does it show?) Sometimes upon a particularly devastating strike to the cranium and I'm lying on the ground steadying it with both hands ands checking for external damage, I realize that I have probably lost a few thousand brain cells that I couldn't really afford to. That's pretty much the only thought I have. To be honest the dazed blank cloud-watching feeling would be rather pleasant if not for the blinding pain that usually accompanies it.

Eventually, something reroutes itself in my head and I manage to pull myself back to a lucid state. But I sometimes wonder how many redundant back-ups I have left up there. :)
