Just wondering does anyone on here fence at all?

The Olympic thing- the sword thingy as the less informed call it

How long- where'd you fence and why oh why did big ol' swords attract you?! :D

En Guarde!

* This is not a spelling flame but an actual question *

Do Americans use the spelling 'en guarde' instead of the French 'en garde'?

ummmm.... crap.

I was merely using the Anglicised version  I could have sworn it was just the one spelling....

No, wait- its a typo on my part :p Meant to be 'en garde' :D

Sorry, I don't do sword work. But my son did several years on the fencing team in college. He continues to have a serious interest in swords, but it's in broadswords and midieval period. Not re-enactment, but combat skills. There are quite a few swords in this house.

Fencing can be bad for you. The father of someone I know got taken in by the police for fencing.

saber. lightsaber. fencing was fun for about five minutes. then i realised that i was by far the best in my class for the soul reason that i have extremly quick reflexes and hands thanks to years of baseball. need i remind you that baseball is not usually associated with any form of gentlemen's combat.

I used to Fence. Shouldn't have given it up. I trained @ a local club which had fairly low monthly dues AND had enough extra equipment so that all who joined could do so without having to immediately spend hundreds of dollars on gear. It was (well is, its still around) fully accredited and when I was there, had memebers who competed on Provincial and National levels. I was 14 when I started, 19 when I stopped. I fenced for 5 years, Foil at first, but also Epee for the last 2 years I was in the club. I made to the Provincial Finals during my last year, but got elimanted fairly early on. I credit about 50% of my success to the fact that I'm ambidextrous and fenced with my left. (Isn't it something like 85% of the world's top fencers are lefties?)

I gave it up because 2 of the 3 coaches left (1 to teach in Poland, the other to do a 3 year photographic assignment with National Geographic). The 2 that left were my favourites (especially the photographer) and the one coach that remained was a total schmuck. I couldn't stand him (it went both ways) and his asshole attitude and approach soured me on the entire venture.

i took my fencing class in some "smart kid" program up at a college when i was about 13. fun, but as i said, too easy for a good athlete a in low competition atmosphere. maybe if i could get into a program now i'd like it more?

Never really done fencing, but done a reasonable amount of stage fighting, for which we quite often use... foils. So theres your answer. I think stage fighting can often be more fun than real fencing, just because you get to coreograph moves that would never ever work in real life, but look great.

Did some SCA and standard fencing in college. Foil for "straight" fencing, and foil blade with either sabre or epee bell and sabre grip for SCA.

I use a lightsaber. A yellow one. Very rare.
