interesting thought. The $2 bill is cool with the signing on the back. I say we base our monetary standards off the system of primes, or using binary methods. We can easily make any number with either of these systems.

I beleive the $2 bill is made to reduce inflation or something, I know it has some purpose that its made for, and only during periods when its needed.
But it is a pretty neat bill ^_^

Australia has the current system
Cents in coinage - 5, 10, 20, 50 (1, 2 were dropped)
Dollar in coinage - 1, 2
Dollar in notes - 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 (1, 2 were dropped for coinage)

Yup, you guys should have coins, but I'm not holding my breath. I don't understand Americans, I really don't. Dollar bills... Fahrenheit... Inches... Instant Coffee... it's like you're from another planet, or another era, at any rate.

So nothing comes out to $#.99, that's all you see in America!!!

If you use the credit card, 0.99 is OK. Using cash, it's rounded to $1. So we get 0.95 specials instead.

We got rid of the 1+2 cent coins, and shops either adjusted by moving their prices to .95 or just rounded. With the popularity of EFTPOS nowdays anyway, it doesn't matter too much. Now they're getting rid of 5cent coins and making the others smaller.

actually in australia there is lots of stuff for 99c... its just the final bill (ie at the register) is rounded to the nearest 5c (some stores always round down) so it makes no real difference except no need to carry useless coins. The better real annoyance about the US i have is that they dont include all costs on the ticket or ad, so you have no idea what the cost is going to be (eg buying a coke, say its 99c. i check my wallet, yes i have a dollar coin/bill. Here thats all i need to do, there i need to find another 10-20c to pay taxes and other bonus features :-( )

well when i'm taking lunch from the vending machines at work and have nothing smaller than a $5 bill in my pocket, I head to the change machine, and invariably recieve three $1 coins and 8 quarters in return for my $5 bill.

I receive two types of $1 coin:

a)Sacagawea (sp?)... a gold/copper-hued coin

b)(i think it's...) Susan B. Anthony (silver-hued coin)

I always spend the Susan B. coin first, because I prefer the goldish sheen of the Sac coin.

You'll probably find all new $1 and $2 coinages (or any other currency) these days is mainly Cupro-Nickel. They'll go black or green and lose their shine very quickly.

The coinage of old - in Silver and Gold are just collectors items these days.

I rather think that is a good idea....though we could just have a five dollar bill, not a coin. But one and two dollar coins are good.

Another good idea: $1.01 bills!

Some stores didn't understand the $2 bills were legal currency. One such story linked below, but I recall reading several others similar.

IMO the biggest problem with US $ coins is that they are not sufficiently different in size from the $.25 to make a genuine "pocket difference".

I've always thought that our $1 coin should be more like the ₤1. Nice and thick and heavy. Lets you know that you have money in your pocket.

The Australian $2 uses less metal than the $1 which itself uses less metal than the 50c coin.

I heard some plans to stop making the penny. Do people just find their house filling with the things? Of course the people from Illinois would freak from the idea but I'm sure we could live without it.

Well, nobody's said anything about the U.K. system so here goes:

Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50p and £1, 2, (£5 on some commemorative ones)
Notes: £5, 10, 20, 50

Everything works well, you should copy our denominations and adopt GBP as your currency.

Nah. It all gets screwed up by regional sales taxes anyway.

(anywhere from 0-15% depending on the State, product and city...)

Damn straight! Ain't no one gonna take my Lincoln pennies!
Seriously, though, the US gov't has tried many times to get the people to use $1 coins. The people don't like them. I used to work at a bank. Every time I handed someone a Sacagawea, they'd say "can I have a real dollar?" Every time I tried to spend one, cashiers looked at it intensly, trying to figure out if it was really money.

I hope they don't. I wish they would drop the penny because I am sick of coins. You lose them a lot and they are heavy. My wallet gets out of shape because of coins. The only purpose I have found for them is a game I play with my friends where we attempt to put them in each other's clothing.

one problem with the Sacagawea is that she doesn't work in soda machines. hehe

That's a much better method than any I've seen. The penny costs 8 cents to produce (and obviously is worth only 1) and is just unnecessary change to throw off buildings and at cars and things. No one likes the penny.

They should make editions with Star Wars characters or something so they will be collectable.

Mexico currently has $0.05, $0.10, $0.20, $0.50, $1.00, $2.00, $5.00 and $10.00 coins; and $10, $20, $50, $100, $200, and $500 in bills.
