Do Americans think?

Is this overburdened cultural hate some form of twisted pseudo-patriotism? I don't get it.....why do you think you're the best nation in the world? It makes me so bitter when you so patently are not.

It's good to know you make unfounded generalizations without any basis or proof presented.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! In this corner....we have arrogance and ignorance fighting side-by-side!

And in the other corner...we have anti-stereotyping and education!

Mmm..Generalizations. Those always work.

*sighs*Believe it or not, I'm an American. I don't think America's the best, I'm not patriotic, and I am fully capable of thinking, and do so quite often. Not everyone here is blindly patriotic, xenophobic, or thoughtless.

Yes, there's a large number of people who think it's the best place on the planet, there are a number of people who'll blindly follow the American government no matter what it does, and there're some who don't like foreigners...and some are a combination of those mentioned above. This does not mean that you can lump every single person residing here into one category like that.

There're good points and bad about this place, and some choose to see only one or the other. Don't assume everyone is like that.

One of your problems is that you're assuming and characterizing all people into one category, it's almost as if you're assuming everyone in America is like President Bush. Personally I don't think America is the "best nation in the world" but I still love my country, but at the same time I admire many others as well, if it was up to me and it weren't for the language barrier I would personally prefer to live in Japan. It seems a little hypocritical to me though, because when it gets right down to it who doesn't think their country is the best, British people do, French people do, most people, even Canadians think their country is the best in the world...so I don't totally see your point.

One of those four places I assume.

Be serious and treat us Americans like rational people and we'll treat you the same. I'm drowning in your arrogance and ignorance and stereotypes.

I will have to agree with you. This is a form a twisted pseudo-patriotism. I even have to live in this damn country, at least I got a taste of other countries to know that both Germany and Canada are superior, not to mention Great Britain. France is still coming up a bit short, for perspective (I'm not biased) and Spain has a long way to go. But yeah, American high culture is still inferior to European culture (as well as politics), and American low culture, well...backcountry hicks goin' Truck-Muddin'. Enough said.

Admittedly, it depends on the American. Some Americans are quite bitter that other Americans feel that way. Those same Americans also often get quite bitter when others try and classify them into the same category they're so bitter at.

Of course, none of that applies to me. I'm just a permanent resident. :p

And lucky you Carnivorous...here's a blindly anti-american type for you to feed on! I was really beginning to think you were delusional when you insisted they exist! Now, compare me to this one...don't I come off looking better?

Not exactly true, I've gotten to see other countries through my travels and paying attention to the news, and I'd have to say European countries have significantly more to offer to their citizens (never mind that they're more socialistic) and European corporations generally provide better goods for lower prices. The quality of life is much nicer.

That is a blatent stereotype. Born and raised and American, I am not particularly enamored of my country. I recognize our faults and frequently feel the need to condemn my government for what it's done wrong. I do feel lucky to live in a country like America, where I have more freedom than I would in many other countries, but I value my rights above all and this means that I must be continuously critical of my government in order to avoid being brainwashed into believing propaganda in our media.

Of course, there are many reasons for the behavior you've pointed out. Schools in our country present a glorified version of American history, which of course leads many people to take misplaced pride in our country. I don't think you can condemn us for that, as I think schools in every country gloss over some of the gory details of that country's history. Also, the American way has gone steadily downhill. People now spend hours in front of the TV set everyday, filling their brains with information that they automatically accept as god's truth without doing research to back up the facts.

Then, of course, there's 9/11. Perhaps preventable, instead of being seen as a security flaw and an embarassment, it is being used to justify extreme nationalism and too severe security measures.

So, I take an issue with what you said for the stereotype it presents, not for the sentiment. But, while you are critical of our excessive nationalism, be critical of yourself as well for what was a misplaced generalization on your part.

True enough, it's all just a matter of personal opinion. But seriously, Truck-Muddin'? Wouldn't the existence of this de-legitimize any chances of American cultural domination? Though I will admit, our movies are still the world's best.

To be perfectly honest...I was trying to test whether the general percieved stereotype that often comes to light is all that reflective... I am very pleased to see that many Americans have a based, logical view of their nation.

Forgive my evocative generalisations (I was doing this on purpose, I am aware that many US citizens do not think like this, but am also aware that this stereotype exists in my country).

P.S. I am from the U.K.
