S. Korean man dies after 50 hours of computer games (http://fullcoverage.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050809/od_uk_nm/oukoe_odd_korea_games)
SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing on-line battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.
Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.
"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.
Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.
After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.
He died a few minutes later, it said.
South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.
It's only a matter of time until NationStates, too, kills someone. ;)

If you're going to do something for 50 hours straight until it kills you it should be something constructive, like helping disaster victims, or something really fun, like sex. Hell, even if he died after snorting coke for 50 hours straight would be less nerdy than killing himself with computer games.

I'd rather die of computer game exhaustion than of a drug overdose.
But sex exhaustion? Yeah, that's not too bad. :)

This isn't the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last. However, were it not for Reuters, I'd chalk this up to one of the myriad apocryphal tales out there about things like this happening.

*sigh*
every time I hear a bizarre scary story related to computer games, it's always South Korea!
There was a guy who played EverQuest for like months straight, then another guy killed his character online everytime (!) he saw him, so the guy put an unjacketed .22 through his own head.
Moral? EverQuest sucks!

If this happened in the United States there would be a huge 10 billion dollar government inqury into this lead by Hillary, and a class action lawsuit saying games are addicting and just as bad as cigarettes in killing people and people dont know any better then to not sit your fat ass in front of a computer screen for several days at a time...

I've had caffeine-powered 42-hour sessions a few times before, and they never killed me. Having said that, it is a state of mind I never wish to revisit.

Anything in a very high quantity at one time is deadly. Especially electricity.

She ALREADY compared video games to cigarettes AND alcohol.

Meh. I'll never understand how people can be so obsessed like that. I mean... he quit his job to play games? Seriously... that's very very sad.

Actually, Starcraft is practically a national sport in South Korea right now. And it's not a bad way to go when you live in a country with a psychotic neighbor who's itching for the slightest pretense to go nuclear on you.

I would like to know the overall total score he racked up in Starcraft during those 50 hours...or scores if it were multiple strategy games... If he had to die that way, at least let it be achieving something impressive.

I've read about a few deaths from people over doing games in one session.. or semi sessions. Poor dude. Longest I've ever played a game is 17 hrs.. that was enough! I haven't sat that long in front of one since, I started having anxiety attacks and knew it was times to give it a rest.

The most gaming i've done in one session would be around 14 hours...
But i've been awake for longer than 50 before (but not *much* longer), and a lot more active than just sitting down playing games.

95 Hours?!
For my 17 hr session (I was grinding level 60 iirc in Plane of Valor on EQ-- yeah long time ago lol-- non stop fighting only hopped away from pc to bio) .. I think I would've been able to handle more if I weren't chain smoking the entire time. Man my lungs hurt for 2 days. But no matter, I don't have the desire or reason to sit in front of a pc that long anymore.

Reminds me of our marathon Starfleet Battles fleet engagement sessions.
Starfleet Battles - board games by aerospace engineers, for aerospace engineers
Try tracking the flight path of several hundred missiles seeking moving targets while using direct fire against enemy ships and seeking weapons, while maintaining energy production and expendatures and damage control for each ship in your fleet, while projecting your movement in 10,000 km increments at varying velocities for each ship, while plotting rescue and engagement vectors, while avoiding stationary hazards (mines, planets, moons, stars) and their gravetic effects on all of the above.... on paper, with no computer.
I've been in scenerios where each turn could take up to 3 hours...
Every other week I pull a 54 hour work shift ... I have been solid for 2 years now :) on top of finishing my masters lol
A 54 hour single block? Is that even legal?
There have been times where i've finished work after midnight and gotten home at about 1....then have to be there again by 8 or 9, so i've stayed up all night - no point bothering if i'm only going to get less than 5 hours sleep. But that's the worst i've had to deal with- 54 hours?!?!? What do you do?
