children as guinea pig a medical skandal in NY ...
today a documentation will be broadcasted in germany about the youth welfare office in new york forcing children of the poorest district to test medicaments against HIV. if the parents refuse the tests the ofifice takes away their child custody and puts them in a children's home where the tests were continued unhindered. Many of them died from the adverse effects...

Farfetched? Why so? It sounded not entirely unlikely to me...

At the very least it has to be an exageration of fact.

PETA should release a press statement thanking them for not harming any animals. No I kid but it seems unlikely. I don't read German though so I can't much tell.

I seem to remember something like this taking place in imporvished countries where medical aid was often in the form of experimental drugs to see if they worked. I don't see why they can't leap from there to NY and do this.

It may well be (for all I know the whole thing could be fabricated), but I dont quite see why one would assume that to be the case. What aspect do you consider to be likely to have been exaggerated. For instance I believed the extent to which the in the US one could expect the government to stick their noses into the parenting of low socio-economic citizens, was quite high. It doesnt seem to me unlikely that a child would be taken from their parents if their social worker or the dept had a policy of supporting such testing, and certainly if they took a child away for 'medical neglect' whatever medical treatment the parent had refused for the child would be carried out once the child was in State care. I'm just not sure what exactly you find far-fetched about it.

Thanks for that link, I've read the article and I conclude that it is likely to be true. Frankly I am disgusted and unsurprised. (About the testing that is, proving a link does not disgust me in the least....depending on the content the being linked to of course... ;) )

I have no doubt that this could, and most likely did take place. A government agency abused their power? It couldn't possibly be!

Seriously, I hope that this story gets major attention by our own media, so that a tradgedy like this never occurs again.

Hope springs eternal, but I will not be holding my breath.

My first reaction was that this must be wrong information and exaggeration of some sorts.
But then, both the German ARD and BBC are serious sources... I find this news highly disturbing to say the least. I do hope that this will start an investigation into the actions of the ACS, and that measures will be put in place to ensure that this cannot happen again.

If you (meaning everyone and anyone, not just the poster whose comments are quoted above) are from the US (and a citizen) instead of hoping, could you please write to your Congressman, local and national level NGO child welfare organisations, and get all your friends to do the same. Otherwise it will carry on, and the fact that word got out and no outcry followed will in fact lead to worse.
