WTF Mate is up with LEGO?

No, really! LEGO has messed up. Look at this monstrosity (http://www.lego.com/eng/dino/attack/default.aspx)! On the front page there's a guy with a ski mask! Hey, I've got an idea for a theme: LEGO Terrorists! You could reuse the skimask head and start the LEGO machines rolling out some of that cute LEGO dynamite (as seen in the Wild West theme, 1996-1999.)

When I first saw DINO ATTACK on the LEGO page, I thought (silly me) that LEGO Adventurers, the most kick-ass Indiana Jones plastic knock-off ever, had returned. But no; it's this Jurassic Park III-Metal Gear Solid crap.

What's happened to the good old days of LEGO, as witnessed to by the Fibblesnork LEGO Guide? (http://www.lugnet.com/fibblesnork/lego/guide/) As far as I'm concerned LEGO declined from about 1999, with the introduction of LEGO Star Wars and the other movie tie-ins, and 2003, with the end of the LEGO Dino Island Adventurers, the last great theme. I would write an online petition if anybody looked at those, but...

So, to the point: What could we, concerned LEGO fans as we are, do to ressurect the glory days of LEGO? Those days when bricks were either yellow, red, blue, green, black, brown, white, or grey..? Why are they making brick-red bricks, violet monstrosities, lime-green pieces, or orange minifigs? Why have minifigs ceised to be yellow - now who needs politically-correct minifigs in 5 tones?

The LEGO classic range contains a pitifully small collection. So now, LEGO Corp., let me pose a challenge to you: GIVE ME BACK MY GODDAMNED CHILDHOOD!

Anyone else have anything to add?

Whatever happened to good old Pier Police and company? Aye, that was even before the days of the old-school lego site you listed...

Pier Police... That was a bit before I got started with Legos, but I dimly remember getting presented with one of those for my 6th birthday...

The golden age of LEGO lasted from about 1978, with the introduction of Classic Castle and Classic Space, to 1999, with the introduction of merchandising tie-ins.

Yeh, pirates rock.

...So any ideas how to make LEGO make them again?

This is sooooooo wrong. But did anyone else imagine a lego plane flying into lego towers? This is perhaps the most depraved thought I've had in minutes.

I have an IRC quote from some one on dalnet about some one's brother flying planes into lego towers yelling "allah achbar"

That Fibblesnork site really takes me back.

I used to have a whole bunch of Space and Pirate ones, but Castle was always my favorite. They are all still hiding in my house somewhere, completely smashed to their basest elements...

...LEGO really sucks nowadays. Especially their latest excuses for "Castle" and "Viking" lines.

I would buy every Castle set made before 1998, if I had the chance. :D

Dude. I've thought of things like that before. At least now I know I'm not alone in my quasi-insanity.

Ah, Fibblesnork... I have considerable collections of all of the series on there. I was surprised to see that one cart thing from the Wild West series that carried about four of those little Winchester things on it, in cheap Chinese copy form, at a local dollar store. That brought back some memories...

And Pirates. Probably the high point of Legos in my lifetime.

Off of topic, my math class did a project where we had to build towers of cards. On September Eleventh, we toppled them, first class period. I and my entire team threw paper airplanes at our. we were speechless during second peiod when we saw the news report on the WTC attack. I still can't believe that happened. it is kinda creepy.

I miss the old old pirate sets I liked those Blue soldiers, I also wish they'd bring back Wolf Pack and such, for awhile they had been selling old sets at the shop at home thing but then they got rid of it. And WTF is with these new huge figures? They're so stupid.

AND ****ING HARRY POTTER LEGOS!! ARGH!

I remember once, I had this huge lego war going,
Pirates\Dragonmasters\Fightknights\criminals\Space Villians\UFO\SharkAquanauts
versus
Police\Imperial Guard\Imperal Aramada\Space Goodguys\Royal Knights\Foresters\Black Knights\Town\Crusaders\Black Falcons\Aquanauts

It was a huge war with the headquarters of the good guys being the Royal knights castle and the Badguys being the Dragon masters castle, which we had on a old trunk to use as a mountain. It was impressive.

Modern Technic Lego's rubbish too. Kinda like plastic Meccano, but worse.

Whatever happened to the good old Test Cars, the helicopter, the Control Centre, and that truck that turned into a robot? :(

My Pirate ship kicks ass. I remember having huge battles with my Castle set. Of course the pirates usually won. Because they're pirates. And they're awesome.

Their sales are probably lacking, and they are trying to connect with present youth. Video games, PC and other stuff is knocking them out. Sad, but true. As for what can be done, I don't know.. other than parents or schools promoting the natural builder/engineer in their young ones.

Pirates and castles? You should stage the ultimate battle to decide who is the best: Pirates v Ninjas

But the Lego version of Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail (it's on the DVD) is hilarious! And what about the Lego Bible?

Edit: And I made a pirate ship too.

I didn't say everything LEGO rolled out recently was bad, just damn near everything. And Brick Testament isn't endorsed, or sponsored, etc., etc., by the LEGO company, but by the Reverend. Thus, it's actually clever, well-thought out, and funny.

Have you ever seen Lego Auschwitz? Now that was funny - little Lego skeletons and everything. Deeply, deeply sick. But still very funny.

*sigh* At least Playmobil is still halfway decent.

Wow, when I look at that site it seems I had an enormous set of legos and yet back then I was always thinking 'wouldn't it be great if I had ALL the legos there are'. Apparently I allmost had.
Never all at the same time though.
