Age and religion poll

New Fubaria

I just wanted to get an idead of what age groups here have what beliefs. I will try to make the poll as logical/easy as I can. I am deliberately not adding an "other" option - if you feel no option suits you, don't vote. ;) :D

I'm 33, and the closest system to my beliefs is agnosticism.

Personally, I do not subcribe to any mainstream religion, or think that any particular religion has it "right". I believe that there might be an afterlife and supreme being(s), but that no one can know for sure one way or the other...basically, I'm just shy of being a full atheist, but I believe it would be narrow minded to discount the possibility of the divine/supernatural altogether.

Well, belief system then. Listen, if the polls on this board allowed more than 10 choices, I could have been a lot more specific. ;)

BTW, good to see that every choice has at least one vote. :)

Hmm. Well, see, my family is Jewish, and I'm under eighteen. Really, though, I'm just not a religious person. I suppose I would fall under agnostic - there could be a god, but I doubt it. I just don't really concern myself with any religious matters. I have no religion, really. :)

22, have my own religion. I happen to believe that you should determine what you believe in yourself, so I have no church.

Well, I´m not very religious and I´m not sure about god(s) and afterlife and all that, but somehow I´ve always believed in Norse mythology (not Yggdrasil though, that´s a bit hard to cope with) but I´ll have to say atheist.

I'm under 18, but in four days I'll be 18 so that was confusing...but I said alternative religion because I believe in christianity, but definately not the standard beliefs that most Christians believe, in some ways I'm kind of a new-age/christian...it's complicated... :)

Under 18 and have an "alternative" religion (agnostic, pagan etc.)

Wouldn't it have made somewhat more sense to bracket 'agnostic' in with 'atheist' here rather than things which rely on an actual theistic belief?

Not really. Agnostics tend to believe in some sort of higher power...while atheists such as myself don't buy into that at all. Agnostics are more theistic than not...otherwise they'd stop being agnostics and just be atheists.

18-25 and a quasi-agnostic with traces of paganism and general spirituality. Kind of a mish-mash, but it works for me.

Nah. I think you'll find that agnostics are of the positions that there is no conclusive evidence or reason to believe either way, whereas atheists hold the position that there is no deity. In essence the position of atheism is as arbitrary and unfounded as the position held by the various theists.

well I'm under 18, and I guess you could say alternative if alternative is other. Seeing as it's not agnosticism, but it's not paganism, and it's not the others. Alternative is other. :P

That's hardly fair. Agnostics run the gamut from being more theistic to being more atheistic. While some beleive in a God of some sort, I find the idea of a God to be absurd. However, I don't have the faith in me to out and out state that there is no God, because I know I cannot know for sure.

grew up in a some what christian home (leaning more towards Unitarian universalists) but now I am 24 and a Nichiren Buddhist (http://www.sgi-usa.org) . I don't believe in a God in the traditional sense, but more of a divine force from which all life derive

Nope. It's my poll and I'll do what I like! :p

Nah, I see your point, but for purposes of my poll I consider agnostic and atheist two seperate choices...

I'm 23 and I've invented my own religion in which I believe the world was created specifically to torture me.

It doesn't matter if this is true or not... what matters is that I believe it...

Anyway I believe that comes under the heading of 'alternative'.

I think it is bracketed fine. Atheism and Agnosticism should be seperate. If you break down the words component parts A = Without Theism=belief in god or gods. A= Without Gnosticism = Revealed knowledge of God. So I think it is more than reasonable to bracket them seperately.

I'm not disputing that they are different things, just that bracketing agnosticism in with miscellaneous minor religions seems to be including it with uneasy bedfellows.

To me a more valid way of approaching it would be to have a three fold division or theist, atheist and agnostic. Even that, however, runs into problems when we start taking Buddhism into consideration.
