NCAA Screws Up

The NCAA has gone insane. Now this august group has determined that the use of any "Native American" nickname for a sports team cannot be used in an NCAA championship game. That would include the Florida State Seminoles or any other team with an Indian name. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame? That would be OK. Idiocy.

This is definitely the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Gee, we don't like the mascot, so let's do what we always do and punish the athletes, who are the sole reason we have this evil empire in the first place. Sheeeeeeeeeesh. There are far better ways to accomplish this. Hopefully the NCAA rescinds this ridiculous proposition soon, or at least modifies it, but knowing the NCAA they will keep on truckin' this idiocy right over a cliff. Sheeeeeeeeeesh. Get these morons some competition.

Though I do agree that the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savages is a pretty ridiculous name. That one should be changed to something less ridiculous. But the Fighting Illini should stay intact.

From what I heard, the Braves was acceptable because the university had a 20% Native American population. What really scares me is that people actually advocate this, and, no doubt, someone on NS is bound to as well :(

This world is in a good need of a mass purging. Hopefully the next ice age will wipe out all these annoying bastards and the human race can start anew.

I don't see what's wrong with the name. Football is a barbaric sport, so the "Savages" would be a fitting name for the men on the turf.

Well, I have a friend who is a very large Florida State fan (We always fight, since I'm a Miami fan) and he's also part American Indian. He's taking this ruling as an insult. The Florida State Seminoles are named such because the Seminole Indians are a deeply rooted part of the area's tradition, and the name of the team is a sign of respect to the native tribe.

The good news is, NCAA football bowl games are not sponsored by the NCAA, so this ruling has no effect on football.

...changing a team's name is punishing the athletes? That's all that has to be done to continue to play, isn't it? Why not change the names? Sure, it's going overboard to ban all Native American names, but what's the big deal?

Aye, the same exists with the Illini. How is giving tribute to a group of tribes insulting?

It's just people being ridiculous. If Native Americans want real progress, then they should focus on something other than sports team names, they should focus on things like improving education on reservations, decreasing alcoholism and such similar things, not blowing millions of dollars on lobbying the NCAA and the like.

Duh because most sports logos look like this (http://www.fansedge.com/Images/product/34-28/34-28925-m.jpg)
Do you think people would allow a team to use a logo that looked something like this (http://photos1.blogger.com/img/114/1116/320/aljolson-blackface.jpg) ?

It is exactly as insulting as naming a team the 'Fighting Irish'. No more, no less. Where's the outrage against Notre Dame?

They can't force Notre Dame to change their name. They're such an NCAA institution, especially in football. That would be like asking St. John's University to change their name or Stanford University to change their name. It just can't be done....

Geez - next thing PETA is gonna start whining again and all the animal names will be gone too - we're gonna wind up with the OSU Buckeyes playing the Michigan Roses. Come to think of it, before it's over Ohio State may be the only team to gets to keep its name - unless of course there's some crazy horticulture society I haven't heard of..........

I think Purdue can keep calling themselves 'Boilermakers'. You're right, though. Wait, is there a miliitant horticulture group out there, protecting exploited plants?

Okay, everyone that reads this, SEND A LETTER to the NCAA. Tell them how stupid they appear.

I can understand why, say, the Washington Redskins is an offensive name, because "redskin" is an actual racial slur. But Seminoles and Illini are names of tribes and, if anything, those names honor those tribes. I know that FSU has the approval of the Seminole tribe to use their name. I thought PC was on its way out.

Actually, I think "Fighting Irish" is somewhat more insulting considering it represents a stereotype of Irishmen (of course, a very outdated one that was last current about 100 years ago,but still).

Especially since it was founded by French priests. Maybe if it were founded by Irish monks you might be able to allow it.

Well, in fairness, the name was coined by Knute Rockne, who I think was Irish(-American).

Marquette University has already folded and chosen a silly nickname -- Gold.

All Things Considered, May 12, 2005 ยท Marquette University announced last week that its teams would be referred to as The Gold, an attempt to quiet controversy about earlier names. That decision has been so unpopular that the school will put 10 possible nicknames up for a vote. Michele Norris talks with Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

One of the rejected choices was 'The Jumpin' Jesuits'. They have a good basketball team, remember?
