はい! ひかるちゃん好きです!

And Japanese and Chinese are not related to each other as a language, they are not even in the same language family really. It's just that for various reasons written Japanese has four writting systems where kanji, Chinese script, is the major one. They only use around 3,000 kanji where written Chinese is... forgive me, Dragons Bay, it's around 200,000 right?

*LOL* Yeah, I've done things like that, including asking a poor girl where her honorable castle lives. The worst mistake I've heard is a female AET who frogot her inkan and went back to the staff room to get it and asked the room at large, "Watashi no hanko, doko desuka?" only slipped up and replaced the ha with ma.

Watakshi wa hentai desu!

I know very little Japanese. I'm self taught (which is amazing considering how lazy I am)... although I can't really say that because I hardly got past the 4th chapter of the book I was using. Thence, I only know the A wa B desu(ka) structure.

I also learned all the kana and 200+ kanji from playing a freeware computer game that helped you memorize them, but I'm slowly forgetting them. Oh well, there's always time later...

I hate kanji so much that even government almost looks good in comparison. I have tried to learn Japanese, but there are just too many kanji. At least I could read most of the title of this thread barely.

I don't even like Japan, though. I'm interested in the language because it sounds nice and has an interesting grammar.

You wouldn't believe how big. ;)

Actually they are the same size as a standard US one and use the same QWERTY configuration with just a few extra keys. The OS handles the converstion from romaji, Roman alphabet, to Japanese by allowing you to type in the phonetics and then choosing which kanji or kana you want.

Watashi = わたし = ワタシ = 私 (English: I, the self)
Romaji Hiragana Katakana Kanji English ;)

...I've always wondered,

50 thousand charachters,

How big are your keyboards?

50,000 is a bit more than are in actual common use.

There are 1,945 "Education kanji" (kyōiku kanji 教育漢字) and Daily-use kanji (jōyō kanji 常用漢字), plus another 983 "Name kanji" (jinmeiyō kanji 人名用漢字). The first two sets are the once taught in primary and secondary education, and the "name kanji" are old characters now used only in names. The average college-educated native Japanese speaker knows around 2500-3000 characters.

The highest level on the "Japanese kanji Aptitude Test" (Nihon kanji nōryoku kentei shiken 日本漢字能力検定試験), level 1, tests for knowledge of 6000 characters.

Then there are 46 hiragana and 46 katakana, which are the dual phonetic alphabets.

The number of kanji needed to pass the highest level (which is supposed to be equivilant to a native-speaker high school graduate's level of ability) on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験), a test for non-native speakers, is about 2000.

There are a disputed number of "Gaiji" (外字), or rare/non-standard caharcters - between 40,000 and 80,000 depending on your source. However very few of these are represented on most Japanese computer OSs or word processors. AFAIK, there are about 6000 JIS Kanji (http://www25.big.jp/~jam/encoding/jis.html#kanji90) available for standard computer use.
