Okay, I have a completely honest question for anyone who feels like answering -- Why is religion usually a common debate topic on various forums?

People like to talk about religion perhaps?

I think its because it normally makes long threads.

But why? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Is it the controversy? Is it the emotion? There's got to be some X-factor that makes it such a hot topic.

The fact that the opinions of the religious and the non-religious are UTTERLY irreconcilable means that there will never be a resolution per se, so it will continue ad infinium until everyone gets tired and logs off.

... and religious people suck...

The fact there's so many all claiming to be the right one, and it's all a bit confusing?

This is but one more forum for the religious of many forms and also the non-religious to trot out their opinions yet again.

If people enjoy that sort of thing, then so be it.
I'm certainly guilty of it.

the x-factor is that its never ending. Its not a topic meant for debating. In a debate someone has to win. Its to argue. When theres a thread on creation vs evolution as an example. Everyone throws in their opinions, their links, etc.... but no-one really listens. And at the end everyone leaves thinking that they were right. So the next day it just starts all over again. and again. and again. and again :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I think it's because religion is such a personal issue that usually affects everyone to some degree (believers or not). It's not a financial or political issue (though it can be), but because it is personal, people usually have stronger "feelings" about it and thus it tends to be a hot topic. Unfortunately, there are usually no grounds for consessions, compromises and the promotion of new ideas. Thus these threads get so heated.

Because, sadly, it plays an important role in peoples lives. Mention one thing and religion is bound to come up.

I don't want to say everyone carefully reads other people's posts and thinks about them carefully, but do you think that if everyone did so there would be a consensus and thus an end of discussion? The opinions about religious topics are in my opinion often uch too biased for that, beacause these opinion are based on your education and especially your feelings and not on reason. Or is here anyone who was really convinced to (not) believe by a certain argument? This only applies to experience (and education).

Religion influences politics and our lives HEAVILY

Pretty simple

Some of us like to discuss things that are used to justify changes or requirements in our lives

I guess it's not a fit topic for polite conversation. We don't have any pretense of politeness here, so it's fair game.

too true.
We should have a real debate. Get 5 atheists and 5 christians to debate each other. Then have the agnostics vote at the end to see which they agreed with most.

It's often considered taboo to talk about among friends, really, a good way to turn friends into enemies sometimes. So we talk about it here to avoid that.

For instance, one of my friends found out I'm not a christian, now every time I talk to him he mentions how I'm going to hell. He doesn't do this to another friend who is hindhu though... I don't know why. Now I don't really like talking to that friend, so I don't.

I think its because we are a curious species, because POSSIBLY it might actually effect us during our lives and afterwards. Many also think we are missing something within our lives and feel empty somehow with our faith in God......

As for me i cant help but look up and into the night and wonder about it all...the fact that were here for an eyeblink and gone and all sorts of other ponderings. Im not a fan of religion but ive got a spiritual side and i really hope someones listening.

I honestly didn't think this thread would even survive, but thank you for all of your responses.

As a sidenote, my grandma is nucking futz. She's called four times in the last two days, freaking out because someone dialed a wrong number and accidentally called her.

...it can be a financial or political issue. and there is always a chance for everything ;) . and...

the x is the reason why people are religious and then create 'religious' threads.
religions are lifeguides. personal lifeguides (and sometimes a groups lifeguide)
so its easy to explain why the people dont change their opinion easily in that thing. otherwise they would loose ther self- & objectconfidence. :headbang:

but the people also want to get the best 'way'/religious 'path' to live their life.
so they try to get INPUT.
and in the same time, they try to use their abstract construct to solve the life....one is :gundge: ...the others :fluffle:
some are :D
and some are

religion religion religion

As I noted in a thread I started a few weeks ago, I was shocked to find that Generalites actually debated the merits of various religions themselves as opposed to just religion's applicability to the public or political sphere. =-o

It is something people feel strongly about. People define themselves by their belief in their faith -- or if they do not believe in a faith, in their philosophy.

It's not just that people care about it, its that its one of the only things you can logically debate. In every other issue the situation is too complex for any of us to clearly describe, but religion consists of a bunch of simple, absolute statements that obey only their own laws and those of logic. Thus, easily debateable.

Many here have argued that some of those "absolute statements" disobey their own laws as well as logic.

Yes, whereas in reality there are no laws, logic, absoltues etc., to argue about.

I find there is a real lack of discussion on the relative merits of different types of control laws. I'm a real fan of PID controls for commerical use, but there is surely an H-infinity or Mu-synthesis proponent out there.

I guess the answer is that the roundtable rats will only discuss general interest topics.

talking religion is like talking baseball.

2 men start talking baseball. it starts out with "who is in the lead in the AL east?" or "is bonds really on steriods" it continues forever with heady questions like "was aaron better than ruth?" "was shoeless joe really guilty?" and "why did those bastards ever move the braves from milwaukee? (or worse yet, from boston!)"

there is no end but the interest of the men involved. it can go on pretty much forever. add another guy coming in in the middle and WHAM! you have to discuss it all over again.

religion is the same. almost infinite topics that can be discussed until the net goes down.
