World On Fire!

This is just a link to a song by Sarah McLachlan, but it made me think for a while after watching & listening to it of all the things we take for granted. We sit here day after day and bitch about this and that. But what do we ever really do to effect change? I know I donate a good amount of cash every year to causes I believe in. It seems to me we get so caught up with the little stuff that we never wrap our heads around the bigger picture.

Yeah, sure call me a bleeding heart liberal, I don't care, I'm proud to be one!

World On Fire (http://www.worldonfire.ca/)

It's not a download, it's on a website. I use Quicktime to view, dunno what other formats it supports.

Enjoy!

Sarah McLachlan is a guilty pleasure of mine...Unless you or she are married, I fail to see how that's the case.

Figurative. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?sourceid=Mozilla-search&va=figurative) I meant that indulging in her music is a pleasure I find guilty because of its simplicity.

I love this song. The lyrics put into words why I believe that communism could work. There are those among us who want to work as hard as we can to support the community; those who are unable to support themselves. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.
As for being a "bleeding heart", I to am proud to call myself one. I can literally feel my heart hurting when I think about how little some people on this planet have.
The video is awsome, it shows just how far our money can go to making a difference in this world for the more unfortunate among us.

I never watch Mtv and such like, but I'd be curious to know if this video is in rotation on the music stations.

It does make one think.

If a hundred and fifty thousand can do all that, it is utterly staggering to me in a nation of so much wealth and so much material, that we still live in a world where hunger, disease, and poverty are still an issue for so many people the world over. It saddens me to no end that people would rather piss away their money on a Lexus that provide a thousand meals to their fellow man starving somewhere in africa for a fraction of the price. There is no higher proof that the world is completely fucked when a bottle of Coke costs as much as sending a child to school for a term in Ethiopia.

The wealth of the people in first world countries is staggering when you see how some people in this world have to live... And the amount that goes to waste here; the unecessary luxury and opulence here is truely obscene. In a world where some people are living on thirty cents a day, the economic disparity between the regions and peoples of this world are enough to turn my stomach.

Couldn't agree more. I don't know why or how exactly but this video gave me a lucidity I haven't had in a long time. The west has had the power to do so much for these people for so long. The west has squandered so much money on crap that could have gone to helping these people. Billions on fighters that practically never flew, billions on government welfare checks to oil companies raking in record profits, while most of the foreign aid budget goes to arming Israel.

It is things like this that really drive home how undeserving much of the west is of the oppulence we recieved through sheer luck and that if we as human beings don't look out for each other, no-one will. People need to understand the suffering that goes on in the rest of the world and just how far token amounts of money by our standards can go over there. They need to understand that if we don't build the future, others will and we aren't going to like it.

The world needs to change, and we have to be the ones to do it or fifty years from now some other college student on their summer break is going to come to the same conclusions I have and realize that we always had the power to make things better, we just never had the will.

Programs like this (http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.183217/k.CBD2/Home.htm) let you make a small difference. If this gift catalogue (http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.204586/k.9430/Gift_Catalog.htm) isn't the coolest thing ever, I don't know what is. Ask for an Llama next Christmas, if not just so that you will have a good answer when people ask you what you got.
