Just thought this was a cute story. Synopsis: Soldier from Iraq gets to see his wife have their baby, and talk her through contractions through a satellite hookup. It apparently started when he asked the hospital if there was any way he could get pictures of the birth, and they set this up instead. =)

Of course, it would have been better if he could actually be there, but this is the next best thing, eh?

I read an article about this. I think it's great, but I also think it would make things just that much more difficult for the soldier. I've actually become very thankful over the years that I was single when I was in Vietnam, and my parents didn't really give a shit where I was or what I was doing. That kinda hurt at the time, especially when I got back home after 2 years and my step-mother was like, "Oh. Are you home already?" But it's all good now.

Wow! I bet he would much rather have actually been there.

Do you think that seeing it will make it any more difficult for him than hearing about it over the phone? Or being sent pictures?

I would say it is obvious that it would be very difficult for any soldier to know he had family at home - especially new family he hasn't yet been able to be close to. But I don't see how seeing the birth - something he probably would have severely regretted missing out on completely in the future - is going to make it any more difficult than just knowing it had occurred would.
