A few points...
1) The next General Election is years away. Things change quite dramatically in a matter of days, as demonstrated last month, so how exactly you could possibly plan who to vote for when it is years away boggles the mind. Who knows what will happen to the country and what the current government will do with the country between now and then.
2) You don't know who will be running for the next General Election, nor what their specific policies will be. You don't know, as it's years away.
3) There may even be new issues that haven't arisen yet -- you don't know, as it's years away.
The fact that people can seriously suggest who they're voting for now means that there are far too many people driven more by party loyalty than the actual issues. There's no point being loyal to anything political, as there's no such thing as 'loyalty' in politics -- they'll all screw you over first chance they get, regardless of whether they wear a red, blue or yellow rosette.

Conservative here!
I thought about voting Conservative last election (*shudder*), but I couldn't bring myself to vote for Michael Howard (I was a student in the early 90s and remember him as Home Secretary *shudder again*). And my MP is ken Clarke *uncontrollable spasm*, so there was no way on earth I could vote for him. So I abstained. Again. Just like last time.
I'm torn really. I tend to agree more with Tory policy, but for different reasons - I'm conservative with a small c, they're greedy and selfish (or that's the impression I get anyway).
I really like Gordon Brown, I don't trust Tony Blair as far as I can throw him, I'm sad Claire Short and Robin Cook (may he rest in peace) aren't central to the government anymore, and there are people in New Labour who give me the creeps (Mahn-del-soooooooon. Oooooooo.)
And does anyone take the LibDems seriously? Charles Kennedy seems more naturally suited to Have I Got News For You than parliament. I want a Prime Minister who's statesman like, not chummy. At least TB has that going for him.
Quick thought - shouldn't we all be innoculated against TB now?

Maybe you should give the conservatives a go. Ive been a member now for a while and even I though Michael Howard was a little creepy. We could do with a new generation of figures to replace the elderly, obese ranks of the parliamentary conservative party with someone likeable.
Not too keen on the New Labour approach (ie. lying) and I have no time for Comrade Brown and his stealth taxes. I am slightly worried that when Brown takes control, we may see more hard-line socialism and less time-wasting, something I would love to prevent.
As for the LibDems, well there really isn't that much to say. They have an identity crisis which means that they don't really have a clue about themselves. Charles Kennedy, when sober, has steered them too far to the left to gain real popular support. That is why no one really takes them seriously. Some of their policies are a little silly. Sorry... im waffling.

I think you'll find that's just a general politician's approach, it's just that New Labour aren't very good at it so they get caught.

To be fair, no-one could lower the tone below that of the last Tory government. One word captures that government for me more than any other - sleaze. Hence my incapability to vote for Howard, Clarke et al.

I don't know... I think Blair did drop just slightly below them after the David Kelly affair and when it emerged that he'd lied to us over Iraq, which we didn't need to be told really. Although the last conservative government was quite poor, I think Blair is worse.
I'm a Labour member, but, depending on where I live, I'll probably vote Liberal. Note that's Liberal, not Lib Dem. Apart from being anti-european and a few minor gripes, they're my kind of party.
In reply to the conservative party spokesman before; the last thing we need is a conservative government. More immigrants, please.

Next one is the first i'll be able to vote in, so I'd better do it...
If there's a candidate from one of the socialist parties i'd vote for them (unless it's Respect, I don't trust the SWP that much...) but that's pretty unlikely where I live. So i'd vote Lib Dem as the lesser of two evils, since I support their plans for electoral reform that could give us non labour/tory supporters a chance...
Although it's a bit too soon to guess, I think New Labour will win again with a different leader. Unfortunately there's no real opposition since they've cleverly managed to become a conservative party to attract middle-class voters whilst pretending to be centre-left. Interesting, I think...[/B.S. ]

As of the last election all the parties were rubbish, and labour was most rubbish. After a lot of careful research I voted for the one I disagreed with least and made not one iota of difference to anything. I imagine the next election will be similarly beneficial.
Ha, yes, well, if it made a difference it would be banned...
Why does everybody hate immigrants so much? Is it just the fnordy-xenophobia in the papers?

I don't think people hate immigrants in general. I certainly don't. But I think recent events, combined with the fact that some feel their own culture is disappearing and being replaced has lead to some fearing them more than anything. The Conservatives spoke of "controlled immigration" which is quite a sensible idea, and is nothing racist or xenophobic. It tries to combat the open borders problem. The government really hasnt been able to sort out the immigration situation properly, and as a result people can be smuggled in and this leads to suffering on all sides. Some papers, such as the Daily Mail can be rather xenophobic, but what they actually say makes a lot of sense. It is not blind, stupid ignorance, but balanced and well researched opinion. Labours current policies of political correctness have caused a situation where people are now more xenophobic than ever before and it has created tensions where there were none before.

You are correct.
But thats not anywhere near enough! We should build a wall around the UK over 100ft tall with bricks, yes lots of bricks. Then if anyone tries to get in we open a door which says 'come in' but really it leads to a cage and is attached to a helicopter which flies the immigrants either onto a huge barge or back to where they came from, excellent!
