NationStates RPG

K, so I was up late last night eating some chips and a microwaved hot dog when I got this idea. I just played D&D for the first time a few weeks ago at a friends house. The whole fantasy world thingy was a bit nerdy for me. Anyway, my idea was this:

What about a Nationstates RPG loosely based on D&D rules? Instead of characters, you'd have nations. A nation with a high diplomacy rating would get better saves and make better, longer lasting treaties. Wars could easily be implemented as a series of battles, the outcome of which would be decided by the roll of the dice, modified of course by a slew of statistics such as army size, army strength, will to fight, war weariness, and so on. The NS XML could be incorporated as well.

I'm sketching a rough outline of the game as well as the means to play it over the internet on my website's forums, located here (http://www.applefuck.com/forum). So, what do you think? Is this worth continuing, or am I wasting my time?

I am not completely sure if this is or isn't advertising and hence banned....

Just so you know

I'm inclined to think it is, especially given the RP opportunities of the II and NS forums. You need to be careful with this sort of post, as mods aren't really fully signed up members of the 'We Love Adspam Club'. It's probably ok, though. Anyway, I don't really understand how your idea is different to NS-based RPing.

Cause he seems to be talking about more of a table top verzion of the game rather then being web based.

If so I've got a list of about 5000 games that have simulated this very thing but it's also always cool to see someone elses perspective & mechanics.

My advice to you is playtest the hell out of your game if you even imagine getting it published.

Being someone who runs a table top gaming convention. I have seen a lot of games fail because of game balance issues that make it almost pointless to play anything but one country or character type.

Plus I don't see him wishing to sell his idea.
If say he was a published game designer then perhaps I would call this addspam. he just seems to be having good clean fun to me.

Sounds like a good idea.

it seems to differ from the RP forums in using dice, mainly. Although i don't RP on the forums, so I could be talking crap.

I don't think getting picky about other people's caps in this instance is a good idea: it could be construed as a flame. Also, and I'm making no specific references, those in greenhouses...

umm... remember Risk? that was basically the war part of it your idea... and the game would be kinda hard to learn (if its a full D&D format.. that game takes like 2 hours to learn man..).. and the people who already play D&D might be the only people willing to try it... and most of them would probably prefer the way D&D is themed in contrast to a NationStates theme... but this may start a new thing for D&D... like you know how there must be a million types of Monopoly games in the world (i.e. Cat-o-poly, Dog-o-poly, LOTR Monopoly, etc..) ... this may start something like that with D&D.. although... D&D is far deeper than Monopoly and people may not think its worth the effort to learn each one over and over..

Yes that was a tad immature of me. I just couldn't resist after the hassle's he pulled on me not to long ago for exactly the same thing.

Sorry to Chornaya for bringing this into his thread.

Aiaiai, I didn't mean for this to be adspam at all! Just wanted to share an idea with the community and see if people liked it or had suggestions.

It wouldn't be a tabletop game, nor am I looking to get it published. My forums have a built-in dice rolling function with a cheat-prevention, so this sort of game could be possible online. I was also thinking of making a MySQL database to store user data. It's not as if I want people to stop playing nationstates and play my game. I just think that this could be a useful accessory in the NS rps that go on. I remember my last rp experience was ruined because there were no boundries and everyone kept making newer technologies to outdo the others until we had giant laser walls and space lasers and underwater super-cities and it wasn't fun anymore.

A lot of the game is interpretive, and shouldn't be too difficult to learn. I was thinking of keeping it simple, each game would have a moderator who would tell Nation A what they would have to roll for an action such as, Form mutual protection pact with Nation B. If such a roll was successful, Nation A would receive trade and research bonuses. Also, the moderator can decide to award Nation A a bonus to his roll if he does write a page or so of RP, thereby making it easier to form the alliance.

A fair amount of this game would be automated, and the RPs could still be done on Jolt. Except for the dice rolls.

Do you have any idea how many table top RPG's there are out there. All with different themes & ideas. You can think of almost any genre & they have made a role playing game for it.
In fact there is a huge games convention going on this weekend called GEN CON in Indiana. There will be at least 500 table top role playing events going on during the run of the weekend. I would say only 1/8th of it will be good old D&D.
