Rome:Total War

And to think I almost bought a copy of Football Manager 2005. I know FM05 is a good game, but Rome is probably one of the best P.C. games ever I think. You've got, a campaign where you can choose to be one of 3 factions, you make allies with some and wage war on others, you can play battles with hundreds or thousands of men yet the game doesn't lag, and finally, you can recruit mercs or train your own men aswell as developing settlements manually.
And by the way to anyone who does own this game, on the back of the case in the picture, one of the soldiers, (not a roman) has two faces on his butt. I guess there's a glitch.

Well, first thing you want to do is go download the most recent of the Rome: total realism (www.rometotalrealism.com) mods, that being 6.0, which will unlock all the factions, giving you somewhere in the region of.... *counts* 16 factions to play as (Rome, Carthage, Macedon, Greece, Gaul, Germania, Sarmatia, Pontus, Illyria, Greco-bactria, Seleucia, Ptolemaic Empire, Numidia, Iberia, Thrace, Parthia). It's so much better than the Rome out of the box it's not even funny.
Also, congratulations on buying a fantastic game.... I just have to ask, what are you doing here when you should be PLAYING IT? like I am. it's minimised, see. Tell you, RTR is the game I have played longest out of any I have ever had.... I was playing last october or something?

Or you could edit/cheat some, enabling you to play as the Roman Senate or the Rebels. Personally (after being it without cheating, I'll add), I like it better when you can start out with 1 billion denari. Makes it easier to try to conquer every single province, which is what I'm currently trying to do. :D

Once you complete the game (long or short version) on the campaign map you unlock the other major factions. Mods let you play as even more of course as the guy above me mentioned. Also any faction you eliminate on the campaign map becomes unlocked I think.
Btw, the guy with the heads on his ass is actually a barbarian head-hurler. It does look weird tho.

Rome is definitely one of my favourite games ever made so far. It's up there with Starcraft, Ocarina of Time, and Half-Life and Counterstrike. But Total Realism just makes it so much better. So frickin' much better it's unbelievable. I have 6.0, but I'm doing a bit of editing to the text (with the permission of the modders!) before I install and play it - and besides, I have a campaign in 5.4 to finish first ;)

I hated Total Realism, missile fire was weak and the romans lost their cavalry generals (which I used a lot). Being an idiot I didn't read the bit about having to uninstall RTW to get rid of the mod until it was too late. :headbang:
RTW is a brilliant game especially in in multiplayer mode (me and a friend have had some brilliant battles). And even in single player mode the campaign map is brilliant, but without the realism mod the game isn't half as fun.
p.s The expansion comes out this month!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, even on 'impossible' mode theres huge amounts of money to be had. Once youve got 4+ provinces money becomes no problem (or at least thats what ive found). I just have trouble stopping provinces rebelling when theyre on the other side of the map to my capital.

I currently have about 400,000 denarii, am making more per turn than I can use without training a unit of Aquilari in half my cities every turn and my auto-taxation policy has set the taxes in all my settlements to "low". The highest happiness factor I have is 235%, and there's only about 100 troops in that city :D
When a new war starts and I need the money for fresh legions, I just turn auto-tax off and start setting everything to "very high". Suddenly I can buy the enemy :D Controlling Italy and Greece is one way to financial success; the other is to control the Mediterranean coastline of the Middle East (the region around Israel - forgive me for not knowing the name).
That's the money in RTR for you.
As for you, Randomlittleisland, I say this: The Romans didn't use archers much, and I didn't really notice a difference in their damage. Hire Cretans. You'll want to take them everywhere you go, especially in Greece, because like paper beats rock and rock beats scissors, so too do Cretan archers beat phalangites.

Conquered everything in unmodded game as Julii. Now I'm playing as Greeks with Mundus Magnus mod. Huge additions to the map. I'm trying to recreate Alexander's campaigns in the east.
Anyone interested in an online battle?

I do hire Cretan Archers and I agree that they do kick ass.
Oh, I'm not sure if anybody's already mentioned this but you MUST download the patch from totalwar.com. It fixes some crashes and delays the Marius Reform but more importntly it means that if an archer unit is mixed with another friendly unit they WON'T shoot their friends in the back.

and back to the topic...
i'm a huge fan of all the Total War games, and am pretty damn good at Medieval.
sadly i just can't get the hang of Rome. i played it for 3 weeks and i hadn't even managed to get out of Italy by that time... i guess i just play too slow or something :headbang:
i keep coming back to it but its always the same

I liked Medieval: Total War better.
Europa Barbarorum and Chivalry Total War do look like excellent mods for Rome.
