Your Family Values

We hear all about "Christian" family values, "American" family values, "Muslim" family values, etcetera etcetera.

What I'd like to know is, what family values do YOU, as an individual hold? Do you look to religion or regional ideals, or have you made up your own? How do you raise your children? If you're too young, how would you want to raise your children?

What do you think?

Thanks!

I can't make a poll. I'm looking for YOUR family values. There are far too many ideals for me to make a poll.

Just describe YOUR ideals.

My family values include:

- a very large, extended family on my side and my husband's side
- we are atheists, and are not raising our children with any religion...they can choose one if they wish
- my kids are being raised with an awareness of their Chilean, native, and Irish heritage
- we live in the country because we want to be close to the earth, grow food, hunt, and be close to my family
- our children will be raised to feel as though they are contributing members of the family, we treat them equally and fairly, and they do what they can to help out
- my children speak English, Spanish, and some Cree, and will be in French Immersion when they begin school

Other than that, I don't know what else to say. The way we live seems normal to us...until I see some things I do or don't agree with, I'm not sure I can add more.

My parents (for the most part) leave me to do my own thing, and I leave them to do theirs. That works out. I value that relationship.

...or is that not what you mean? What else are family values, exactly? It's such an ambiguous topic...or maybe i'm just tired. *shrugs*

I have to form opinions without voting? (ew, this is hard LOL)

MY family Values...

~ The kids give thanks before we get to eat our meals.

~ The kids do their homework immediately after I pick them up and bring home from school, before they go outside to play...

~ The kids do their cleaning chores twice a week.

~ I cook the meals after work and picking up the kids...

~ I scare the crap out of the kids if they Lie, Cheat, Hit or Bite or otherwise attack their siblings etc.

~ We get three hard smacks on the butt if anything is done that is bad enough for the Principal at school to have been involved with and we caused it! :p

~ Hugs and kisses and prayers every night at bedtime.

~ We go to church together weekly.

(Is this the kind of stuff we were looking for?)

My wife smacks me from time to time, not enough frankly, I get a quick 'smacking' for saying something stupid or insensitive and then laughing (very harsh sense of humor, I blame my Dad, and he gets smacked from his wife too :p )

My mother's rule is strange..

- your room is yours to mess up... BUT WHY IS IT SO MESSY?! KEEP IT CLEAN?!
- wash your own dishes.. WHY ARE THERE DISHES IN THE SINK?! WHY CAN'T YOU DO YOUR SISTERS AS WELL
- we're pretty much free to do our own stuff, I have to be home on the 11 o'clock ferry or I'm doomed, my sister is working now so anytime for her really. JUST CALL.
- There's no religious presence in our family.
- Mother speaks to us in English, with the occasional cursing in Hokien or Malaysian.
- We are given a relatively high allowance these days, but my mother won't give us money for food or transportation... That's all up to us now.

That's all I can think of. Yes, make mother proud, and anything you do that makes her sad, you did on purpose just to spite her.

In our house there are NO accidents. We are all descendants of PURE EVIL out to hurt my mother in every way possible.

That's cool. That's cool. I don't really believe in that, but you know, as long as everyone's doing what makes them happy and nobody's civil liberties are infringed upon, it's all good... as long as what I say is the final word.

My family values, which incidentally are the same as my political views.^

Yeah, doesn't that suck?

Sometimes I want to suffocate that woman with a pillow which she's sleeping.

But then I repress the evil thoughts and put a happy face on :).

Happy people are good people :).

A conviction that dogmas, ideologies and traditions, whether religious, political or social, must be weighed and tested by each individual and not simply accepted on faith.
Commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence, and scientific methods of inquiry, rather than faith and mysticism, in seeking solutions to human problems and answers to important human questions.
A primary concern with fulfillment, growth, and creativity for both the individual and humankind in general.
A constant search for objective truth, with the understanding that new knowledge and experience constantly alter our imperfect perception of it.
A concern for this life and a commitment to making it meaningful through better understanding of ourselves, our history, our intellectual and artistic achievements, and the outlooks of those who differ from us.
A search for viable individual, social and political principles of ethical conduct, judging them on their ability to enhance human well-being and individual responsibility.
A conviction that with reason, an open marketplace of ideas, good will, and tolerance, progress can be made in building a better world for ourselves and our children.

Basically what I would teach my children.

My family values are based on common sense. I don't believe in religion and in a world with so many religions I believe it's innappropriate to base values on one religious moral code, as it is inadequate in this modern world of ours and can't apply to everyone.

My basic rule: Treat people how you would wish to be treated.

My personal family values (not the ones I was supposedly raised with):

-rationality

-patience

-acceptance (not tolerance)

-the encouragement to feel comfortable in one's own skin -- pretty much the whole "just be yourself" thing

-well, I'm Wiccan, so environmentalism and non-violence are seriously important..

Oh..yeah, and if you do anything stupid, at least TRY to handle it yourself (in an ethical and LEGAL manner!!!) before crying to mom/dad...
