Do you think Dublin int. airport should have a 2nd terminal built? I do. Why? Because it will make jobs and help the Irish economy grow! I was just wondering what irish people or anyone here thought of this idea!

Sure, Why not?

Yes, it absolutely should.
Ireland's economy is growing, and the number of flights to and from the country is growing exponentially.
Building a second terminal will create infrastructure and most importantly jobs.
I think it is important to be able to offer flights to all major destinations, and Dublin airport is rather limited at the moment, Kerry or Shannon offer more flights and more destinations. I think Dublin has to catch up.

Not if Aer Rianta gets to run it. I'm not entirely clear on how it will create jobs or help the economy grow either.

Isn't there this big dispute about Air Rianta or Ryanair?

What are the main proponents of the No camp saying? Why dod they believe it shouldn't be built?

Here's three possible reasons I can come up with off the top of my head...

1
http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/
Ok I know the site looks a bit sensationalist but it raises very real and interesting issues - is the new terminal a wise long term investment if rising oil prices are going to eventually bring flights out of reach of the middle class again.

2
Where would they build it? What's the current land use of the area they propose?

3
Considering Dublin's infrastructure is a nightmare (oh I'm gonna have such a chip on my shoulder when I come back from Helsinki which granted while not being the most exciting place, has one of the best transport systems in the world - a bus trip from the city centre to the equivalent of Killiney takes half an hour, while on a train it takes fifteen minutes) Anyways back on point, do we have the infrastructure to support this (NOOOOO) or is it just going to add to the massive traffic problem have (YES)

Seriously sometimes it really irks me how BAAAAAAD Dublin's transport system is! [/rant]

except more oil can be found or alternative fuels can lessen demand or we can even find alternative fuels for planes. That site is only valid if alot of people don't change to alternatives. (which they will as soon as it's cheaper and as effective or just really cheaper)

2.
Yes there is or they wouldn't build it.

3.
So take the train :p Or the Luas.
Can we afford to build more infrastructure. (YES) Are there plans to help get traffic out of the city, Like the port tunnel and the luas and more in planning stages(like a metro). (YES)

as regards more oil being found did you even read the site - the peak oil is over, yes there'll be a few more oil fields found, but nothing of the scale as to what's already been used, likewise with the use of previously unused deposits in oil shales or whatever, eventually they'll all run out as well

Hmm not sure about the alternatives to oil as a fuel for airoplanes - the reason it's so good is because it's so transportable andd lightweight andd gives so much energy for its mass, compared to say.. coal. What do you suggest - nuclear planes? Planes need bucket loads of energy so that rules out coal, biomass, wood, solar, wind, peat on weight/fuel efficiency. I doubt they could have electric planes if they're still struggling with the slow speeds of electric cars.

Um I fail to see how you answered my question I was asking what the lan-use of the proposedd site was, not whether the was room to build it.

How long had the port tunnel been in construction, and the Luas was meant to have been built when I started college, and five years later when I left Dublin it still wasn't built so I guess the Metro soundsd like a good plan.... in fifty years time. And where is this new infrastructure going to be built? Dublin's land is pretty crowded.

Dublin Airport needs a second terminal, and it should be privately operated. It's a rather crowded, nasty airport anyway.

Actually, Cabra West came to Ireland from Germany, drawn by the Swimmingpools of the nation.

If you ever set foot on this "emerald" Isle, you may visit Cabra West. I don't mean the person, but it is a place...

I already told him that ;)
And it wasn't so much the Swimmingpools as the Irish Sea that drew me here ;)

The last time I was at Dublin International it was over an hour before we got our bags off the carousel in the terminal. Shocking.

I take it you didn't yet have time to visit Frankfurt Rhein-Main? An hour is nothing, really... ;)
