What remains of Jefferson's idea of an American Republic?

His name was Jefferson, and one of his ideas that still remain in the American Republic is democracy.

My uncle, he was in the war.Which war, the Civil War or the Revolutionary War? :D

Hmmm...Of Jefferson's idea, not much. It's not that much of a republic anymore with the current leadership. The people can choose the government that will tell them what to do; I'm not too sure that's exactly what Jefferson's idea was. Of course, I might not know because I haven't brushed up on American history since college, partly due to an awful and really strict teacher who liked to pick on me for some reason. :(

Are we talking about THE Jefferson? Thomas Jefferson the founding father?

Or are we talking about George Jefferson, the laundromat owner who coined the phrase "honkey"? I did't think he had an opinion on the American Republic?

Oooh, how about Thomas Jefferson, George will come later.

I am writing a school paper for it and I have written down my ideas, but I want to match them against others. Mine, I feel, are too drenched in my politics.

Anyone that has any serious opinion on the subject would give you an answer that is drenched in their own politics. You will find some who think that the USA today perfectly represents Jefferson's ideal. Others, like myself, feel that the ideals of Jefferson and the other founding fathers were left behind, and that those same founding fathers would want another revolution today.

The government is best which governs least.

I'm with Druids and Wizards on this one. I really do think that the founding fathers would wish for another rebellion today. Jefferson especially as I seem to remember him being in favor of a largely agricultural America.

Jefferson's idea was that we would "move on up" and "get a piece of the pie". This dream is as alive in America today as it was those many years ago when George and Weezy moved into their deluxe apartment. God Bless the United States of America.

Jefferson's vision of the American Republic is alive and well, the only difference is instead of using the word "slavery" we use "globalization".

Sadly enough, it seems like not too much of Jefferson's ideas remain...

Whosoever shall be guilty of rape, polygamy, or sodomy with a man or woman, shall be punished; if a man, by castration, a woman, by boring through the cartilage of her nose a hole of one half inch in diameter at the least

Bugger.

That's not quite as catchy as "We hold these truths to be self evident..."
