Bounty-hunters snarl Delhi traffic catching cows

New Delhi: A cash reward on the heads of New Delhi's stray cows has triggered road chaos in the Indian capital as bounty hunters on motorbikes compete to round up cattle roaming the streets, The Hindustan Times said on Saturday.

The Delhi High Court passed an order on Thursday instructing authorities to offer 2,000 rupees per cow - an average Indian's monthly salary - to rid the city of the traffic menace.

With cows sacred to Hindus, who make up the bulk of India's billion-plus population, an estimated 35,000 cows and buffalo roam free in the capital, sharing space with hordes of monkeys, camels and stray dogs.

Traffic routinely comes to a halt on highways to allow animals to amble across, leading to accidents.

The newspaper said stick-toting "cowboys" with motorbikes as their steeds were chasing cows all over the city and authorities were hard put to keep pace with the flood of strays being handed over to state shelters.

"There is no dearth of stray cattle ... 2000 rupees is a lot of money. I will not rest till there is not a single cow or bull left on the roads," bus driver Chander Singh was quoted as saying.

Authorities were giving out receipts to be cashed in later.

The cows must be delivered alive, of course. Just a rumour that one has been mistreated can prompt revenge attacks by angry mobs.

One of the unintended consequences of a religious belief. Would it be against their religion to give the cows birth control pills or neuter the bulls?

This has nothing to do with religion. It is the usual politicking by the protectors of Hinduism. The cow protectors should keep the cows in the stable or barn and not roaming in the open.

The problem is that the owners of the cows (yes, many cows do have owners, they are not actually stray cows, like stray dogs) tend to let them out and they roam around grazing freely and come back in the evening.

The Hindus believe the cow to be a sacred animal and it should not be disturbed, molested, or harmed in any way which includes penning them up

Well, yes , all life is sacred. The Agrarian economy revolves around the cow and the bulls being used for ploughing. And cows, being surrogate mothers , have special status.

But how is a cow roaming in the street and endangering its life and others = practicing religion, is beyond me.

Cows are penned up all the time everywhere in India. Heck, I have penned cows in my farm myself. It is only the cow mafia in cities that does this nonsense.

Seems like a reasonable way to deal with the problem, providing there's legal incentive to keep them on the farm in the future. A month's wage, say $46, is not bad at all, but that will breed a gold-rush mentality. That's a lot of cattle to handle - will they make the owners bail them out, or what will they do with them all? Sell them? Can't slaughter, right?

Cow slaughter is a taboo subject in India, especially the Hindi heartland states. It is called the cow-belt ! :D . But a few states allow legal slaughterhouses. I have seen older cows being transported to Kerala, a southern state, where they are slaughtered and sold.

Animal farms for cows is also prohibited in India. But goats and chicken and pig farms are allowed. Discrimination !
