Online Game Question

I havent really posted here before, but this is the most active forum I know of so I thought I'd give my question a shot here.

I am looking to find out the name of a certain game, but I only know a few things about it and have been unable to locate it on the internet. Here are a few of the facts I know about the game.

The game I beleive is in a medeival warlord setting.

The game allows you to purchase goods and property directly from the game publisher.

A castle was bought inside of the game by an Australian man from the manufacturer for near 1.5 million dollars.

I know this is not a lot to go on but if somone knows of the game I am talking about I would appreciate it if they could share their knowledge. :)

I hope, for your sake, that you're seeking the title of this game because you're a journalist and looking to make a mockery of the game...and not because you're interested in throwing away money...

Because if you've got 1.5mil, I'll draw you a castle in MSPaint and you can call it yours if you want.

I mostly wanted to create a character and run around seeing how much money people have spent on the game. The game does not cost anything to run around and play but the items and things generally do I beleive.

Interesting.

It's like the lame thing that new characters say to more experienced characters in any sort of game "what a loser look at how much time you spend with the game," when in reality...experience and time are not necessarily as connected as people like to believe. But in this game...your characters wealth and how much money you've put into the game are actually related. So the more powerful characters REALLY ARE losers.

You're probably referring to Everquest, I think. Items have been bought and sold on Ebay from the game for extravagant and retarded prices.

Im positive it is not Everquest, as far as I know there is no virtual land to be bought/sold in Everquest, and it requires a monthly subscription to play.

But not real estate and so forth...you can't buy a castle in Everquest. Not from Sony, not from EBay.

True, but I figured they'd misheard, maybe.Otherwise...I'm not sure, then.

I haven't heard anything about Runescape in a long while. Could that be it possibly? Or if it's a new game, try Guild Wars. I'm not sure what you can/can't do in that game.

You're thinking of Ultima Online, and it wasn't 1.5 million it was 1.5 thousand. It's pretty common to spend RL cash on ingame items/etc these days.

That doesn't make it any less retarded, does it?

Matter of opinion. Online gaming is a hobby. Hobbies cost money.

I am positive it was 1.5 million, and that it was not Ultima Online. =) I remember reading it in PCGamer or some such magazine a few months back, but unfortunately I dont keep old magazines.

Perhaps it was "There", then? I know they sell items directly, actually.

Yes, like the money it costs to purchase, maintain, and upgrade your PC. Or the money it costs to purchase your online game. Or the money it costs for your internet/power bills. Or to help pay for a rented server, or pay for a subscription in the case of games like WoW and EQ2 who host the servers themselves. All money that is going to quite tangible things.

Right, but if you want to get ahead faster, then you can buy a levelled-up character, or nicer gear. Just like you can use the alley's balls when bowling, or you can spend $300 to buy your own. What you do with your money is none of my business, and what I do with mine is none of yours.

The only game I can think of like that that is a major title is Neocron, but that is apocalyptic future setting, I assume there are also hundreds of similar games

Well...buying a level 50 character with tons of resources and awesome gear in Everquest...yea, that's cool and all. But then you're not even playing. You can't even gain any more levels. I never really understood people who wanted to buy all this stuff that you can get for free if you've got patience...and actually play the game.

Max level in EQ1 is 70 now, btw. :P Went to 60 with Kunark, 65 with Planes of Power, and finally 70 with Omens of War.

And, yeah, most of the game is at 70 now. It's all about high-end raiding.

Setting sounds like EverQuest I/II, but as already stated you can't buy castles in either.

It's not GuildWars - although I believe you can purchase guild halls, I don't think castles are available and from the few hours I spent playing that game before I decided it was all gorgeous graphics and no actual game, they were cheap as chips in the game world, available to anyone inclined to start a guild, and weren't something that'd be worth a single RL dollar...

Not Neocron - setting's wrong. Same goes for Anarchy Online and the Matrix. It's not Eve, clearly, since that's all spaceships. Star Wars Galaxies is out on the setting - although I believe there's a budding SWG eBay market.

World of Warcraft I just don't know cos I've never played it. The screenshots and the Leeroy Jenkins video were enough to put me off that (although the video is hugely funny - especially if you tend to think MMORPG number-crunchers are bit too anal and need to chill out a bit...).

All I'm left with is Dark Age of Camelot. I hadn't heard it'd shut down, although I haven't heard much about it lately.

Anyone offer any advance on DAoC?

Not DAoC, I played that for a while myself.
