Well, haven't smoked for four days now!

The next few days will tell the tale, whether I'm going to have sufficient will-power to avoid picking the damned things back up, or I'm going to cave in and light up again.

It's not easy, but it's not quite as bad as I remember it the first time I quit. :)

Well I'm pretty sure it takes 3 days to kick your nicotine addiction so anything after that is purely psychological.

I have something that may help you in your quest to quit. Every time you pick up a cigarette, simply think of the most disgusting mental image you can. Pick the mental image you'll use in advance. Good luck. :D

if you find yourself tempted just look at and smell an ashtray, and think "thats whats inside my lungs thanks to these things"

also i hear fiddling with cigarette-shaped objects like pens can help

edit: i haven't smoked any weed in about 2 weeks by now, and thanks to its non-addictiveness i'm fine... though i would really like a spliff right now :P

LOL! No need to go through all that. Just like when I quit for ten years before, I'll be substituting strenuous physical exertiion for the cigs. Fortunately, there's no lack of volunteers to help me exert myself. It's all good. LOL! :D

I started smoking when I joined the Navy, I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for pretty much twenty two years straight. I used to say I would never stop smoking because if I didn’t want people to think I was a quitter. :p

But now I know, quitting smoking sucks...

I tried chewing on toothpicks, gum, straws, string-cheese...but I never did the nicotine replacement stuff (patches or gum etc.,) because I thought what’s the point in that, it seems like it would just drag out the process of quitting, so I decided to just get it over with and stop, one hundred percent stop. Not smoke anything at all, no cheats not sneaking one here and there during ‘hard’ times etc., just stinking quit and be done with it. (in hind sight, I don’t know if using a patch or gum would help or not, I won’t say it’s useless, just saying what I’ve done)

I ached and coughed and hacked, I spent a lot of time being pissed, I bitched and moaned and was altogether ornery and miserable, but I stopped buying and stopped smoking and learned to tolerate being miserable. I try to direct my anger (when the urge comes) at the cigarettes themselves rather than the quitting part, I have to do that every time I get a sudden urge to light one up…

I haven’t smoked a cigarette in 15 months. I’ll get back to you when I find out how long it takes for all of the urges to go away, even now I still get urges (those bitches). I think I’ll always get the urges. I’m not trying to discourage you, I’m trying to be honest with your so your better prepared. Because if you think the urge is going to go away, anytime soon, while you are trying to quit, you will get more and more frustrated by waking up every morning and finding the urge to light up is still strong and still there… creating a scenario that would be more likely to give up on quitting. But if you know and expect the urge to smoke to stay with you, you can prepare mentally for it and know that you will have to do it every morning, every day, every beer etc., the urges never leave.

Tuck it in, suck it up, tighten the old belt buckle and quit smoking, just stop, don’t do it anymore, punch your car steering wheel when you want to light up, swear and kick and bitch and moan, throw the can of beer out the window… but just stop. :D

Good luck, have fun. If you have success, let us know. If you flub it up like a sack of weak willed pansy waste, then keep it to yourself (we wouldn't want to discourage the next person that thinks about becoming a quitter too  )

My English teacher recently stopped smoking (had to if he wanted to work in a school, since theres no smoking on campus, period). A bit later he took a role (Soldier #5, I think) in one of those straight to TV Stephen King movies, where he walks across the street with a hooker and gets blown up in a bar.
He apparently had to smoke all day, 'cuz it was Vietnam and everybody smoked (so said the director), picked up hookers and so forth.
It was rather amusing, however, to see a section of downtown Tucson (Arizona) turned into a Vietnamese market, especialy during winter.
He says he felt rather sorry for the hookers, who, as hookers, didnt get to wear much. It gets VERY cold here in winter.
Im off track now...sorry :P

Good job Eutrusca, now you only have to worry about getting cancer from the sun, markers, desks, sunscreen, bugspray, asbestos, computers, television, radios and just about everything else :)

LOL! Well, I'm really not so concerned about getting cancer as I am about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ( COPD ). I was a long distance runner for many years and know the importance of breathing. ;)

I quit for 10 years once, but started back when I was confined to a wheelchair for six months after my military paracuhting accident. This time, I'm quit forever! :)

Well, I'll try to keep from setting you off while you go through the withdrawals. Wouldn't want you to get forumbanned again, after all. :D

Good luck with it, by the way. I was one of those smokers that people like you hate--I never had a nic-fit, never had withdrawals. I could smoke a pack, put them down and not pick up another one for 6 months. Drove a lot of my friends crazy. I feel for you dude, and hope you're able to kick it.

The problem i have with quitting is this:- Non smokers will never, ever realise how difficult it is to go without a cigarette when you have a beer in your hand. Once you have sampled the two together, you realise, they are naturally paired, a meal in themselves.

So, basically, i have decided as and when i "quit", i will just quit every day smoking, and keep social smoking. Foolish maybe, but it's the only solution i can see.

You can do it, I know you can.

I think many may agree that the psychological addiction is more serious a problem over the long-term than the physical addiction. I found there are trigger points that cause withdrawal symptoms - it may be having a beer, cup of coffee, etc. The fore-knowledge that those are predictable and temporary events makes it possible to endure those moments.

Hang in there.

Congradulations. I found it helped to chew on a pen. I got cured of the pen habit when the pen broke and squirted ink into my mouth. Ink is horrible stuff. Anyway, I've been smoke free for about 13 or 14 years now.

In the interest of complete honesty and disclosure, what I wrote you is also directed toward myself - sort of a pep talk.

You see, I am still using tobacco after having successfully quit three times, and staying clean for a number of years between episodes. I'm getting ready to quit for good- or getting up the nerve - and am chanting a mantra similar to what I wrote you in preparation.

Why did I start again three times after having gone through the suffering? Who the hell knows, I'm an idiot. Took the spur of the moment impulse to indulge, firmly convinced that just one wouldn't hurt. Nope, Mr. slow learner each time became instantly addicted again, never realizing he must have an addictive personality or some similar disorder.

The next time is it. Now that I underrstand myself better I'll never touch it again.

What you must remember when you quit is; If you have just one cigarette, even if you have been off them for five years, you will be addicted again. It happened to me and that is why I won't give in to the urge and haven't for the last 12 to 13 years.

Finances once conspired to make me quit smoking (cigars and 'other') and caffine at the same time. I seem to remember a lot of people with their forearms up saying, "Dude, aren't you a pacifist?"

It's been said that caffine keeps you alive. Not me, you. I'm sure you can sort that out.

I was all set to quit smoking cigars and then I moved into this place with this great elevated deck in a redwood forest on the side of a hill with wireless internet access. Damn that's a great cigar setting.

I just have to keep saying-I don't want to speak out of my neck, I don't want to speak out of my neck...

Good luck, Trusci. I'll try not to push your buttons. Try.
