Google.

They do more than Yahoo, yet their homepage isn't cluttered with lots of useless bullshit.

Google, at least as a search engine. Their news service is incredibly biased and poorly set up however.

Google's search engine, and I like their plans to add more information yet. Aren't they supposed to have the libraries of Yale and Princeton online within a year?

Google by a country mile.

Much better and easier to use. Yahoo is confusing and annoying.

True, but it's a very liberal corporation.

For searching, Google. For non-searching features, Google. For sheer coolness, Google. I do like Yahoo news a bit better though.

I choose Yahoo. Google is great and everything, but it lacks many things Yahoo does. Example: An Instant Messenger; Free 1 mb email service (Gmail by google only allows about half of what yahoo mail does); Up to the minute news with Video from many brodcasting companies; The image search for both are the same, if you truely study the pictures of 1 topic, they are the same; Plus, Google will be partnering up with Amazon.com to make Googlezon.com. Partnerships aren't my thing. They go too far with what they both can do. Do my vote goes to Yahoo! YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Waterana, that is your opinion about Yahoo being confusing and annoying.

Uhm, GMail = almost 2.5gb now buddy.

Plus, last I checked, with Y!Mail, you can send only 4mb emails, but with GMail, you can send up to 10mb emails.

Google does lack an Instant messenger, but I'd still go with AIM over Yahoo, even if you take Google out of the picture.

Thanks for reminding me to check my G-Mail account. Word-A-Day gets annoying if you can't check it every day though. And Yahoo IM > AIM, IMO. AIM is a crappy program, from a POS company.

POS Company, yes.

Crappy program? Maybe. But at least it's not cluttered with bullshit. It's simple. And I don't need all sorts of shit running around my text message conversation with a friend. Who needs IMvironments to have a text convo? Seriously. AIM's windows take up the least space on my screen and dedicate more of their window space to text than other messengers.

Some IMviroments are fun though. I <3 drawing and chatting with people. And the radio is pretty good too.

Well, I've got Napster...not to mention there's shoutcast and Bassdrive.com...so the radio isn't really worth anything to me.

And again, I'm not interested in an IM Program for gaming. I'm interested in an IM program for IMing. And I heart simplicity.

Google beats the living shit out of everything else. Also, AIM is much better than Y!IM.

I prefer yahoo. I like having news headlines, a search engine, and things like maps one click away from my home page. Google isnt bad, but I get good results with yahoo, consistently. Its the extra's that make yahoo better.

That's why you use Mozilla. You have a search toolbar built into the top right and you can set it up to search through different websites like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Wiki, dictionary sites, torrent sites (if you want), etc. etc. etc.

And Riemstagrad almost has it right.

Google for search.
But not Yahoo for mail. If I didn't have two other non-commercial email addresses (one for my school mail, I'm a student, and the other with my name @ my website's url), then I'd use GMail over Yahoo. It's way more effecient.
And Gaim is what I actually use. Not AIM. Although I log onto AIM in Gaim.

True, but it's a very liberal corporation.

We have very different definitions for "liberal"..... When I think of "liberal" news, I tend to think of one who puts up news from many different sources, and presents a wide variety of views. (That is, liberal is the reverse of bias); and such, do not consider Google News very "liberal" since it only presents one side. And provides a very "limited" (read conservative) use of sources.

Tekania does remind me of something. I do have a Yahoo Movies page bookmarked because it is the quickest/easiest way for me to check local movie times and such. I don't really read movie reviews, but if I did, I'd get them from Yahoo, simply because they're right there when I'm looking at movie times.

You can't chat with Yahoo mail.

There are people here who have stated they prefer Yahoo mail over GMail, and I'm just wondering. While I can understand the difference of opinion over some of the other things between Google and Yahoo, I don't really understand how Yahoo's mail service can even be mention in the same sentence as Google. Google has Yahoo trumped out in every possible way that I can see.

Isn't there Yahoo Messenger though? Don't you need the YahooMail account to do that?

I wouldn't know though, I'm strictly a hotmail-for-friends/gmail-for-school type person.

It's really a question of what you are used to and what you grow into using. Of all the search engines I have ever used, Google strikes me as the easiest to use and least proprietary. Experience has shown me, however, that moderated discussion boards (like this one, eh?) work a lot better than free for all newsgroups such as Google took over. Anyone remember Deja.com? Yahoo newsgroups tend to fizzle unless the subject is really needed.

As to being everything to everyone, I wish they wouldn't try. If Google and Yahoo were to surpass the specialized work of eBay and Amazon, the world would be poorer for the monopoly. Which is why I'd never shop at WalMart.com, either.
